Archos 8 Home Tablet gets unboxed and examined

We’ve already gotten our hands on the Archos 7 Home Tablet , but the Archos 8 has been considerably harder to come by, and hasn’t made much of a public showing since a brief appearance courtesy of the FCC back in May. The folks at Archos Lounge have now gotten their hands on the bezel tablet, however, and given us our first real look at the device. As you can probably tell from the form factor, this one is primarily designed to be used propped up on a table or a desk, but you can fold away the kickstand and do a bit of bezel-enhanced web browsing if you like. Head on past the break for Archos Lounge ‘s video of both tablets — en fran

HP TouchSmart tm2 Adds Core i5 Processor to List of Features, Available Now

Back in May , there was a pretty robust rumor making its way around the Internet, saying something to the extent that the HP TouchSmart tm2 convertible laptop would be getting a big improvement in the processor department. It launched “back in the day” with Intel’s Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor, and the rumors suggested that Intel would be supplanting that with their own Core i5 CPU. And, sure enough, that’s finally happened. Coming after the launch of the Core i3 CPU variation just a few months back, the i5 is a welcomed addition to the line-up. It still features that same 12-inch multitouch touchscreen, but it can now be installed with a 1.2GHz Core i5-430UM CPU.

Skype with multitasking support now available for iPhone 4 and 3GS, 3G calls to stay free

Skype has always sort of served as one of the poster children for why iOS just had to allow applications to run in the background. I mean, come on: being able to avoid gobbling up my precious minutes without having to keep the application open all the time just so I don’t miss calls? Yes

Biomass robot eats food, requires litter box

(photo via inhabitat) Researchers at the University of Bristol are hard at work designing robots that can draw power by digesting food . Their latest offering is Ecobot III , which feeds on processed sewage. This doesn’t sound appetizing to me, however it is apparently just the thing that its 48 microbial food cells want to munch on. The microbes extract energy from the food by digesting it, and the robot extracts some of it by harvesting the electrons put off by the microbes.

AT&T Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) review

The Galaxy S, when announced, had a full 4 hours to bask in the limelight of this year’s CTIA in Las Vegas before Sprint outshone it with the HTC EVO 4G, the country’s very first 4G phone of any kind. While the EVO’s specs were clearly more breathtaking, the Galaxy S still had nothing to cry about.

STM Jacket for iPad Review

STM Bags is an Australian company, founded in 1998, that is dedicated to making laptop bags that “don’t look like a laptop bag.”  Lately, they’ve expanded their offerings to include some bags designed for the Apple iPad.  Just like their laptop bags, the iPad offerings are sturdy-looking bags that are at home on a college campus or in the business world.  STM were nice enough to send three iPad bags to The Gadgeteer for review.  I’ll cover the Scout and the Micro Extra Small iPad Shoulder Bag in separate reviews.  I’ll be discussing the Jacket for iPad in this review.

Cool Things: AppWall Screensaver for Mac

Remember the App Wall that Apple has had on display for the last couple of years at their WWDC conference?  Very impressive stuff – and now you can have a sort of cut-down (very cut down) version of it as a Mac screensaver.  It has options to show top free or paid apps. It takes a little bit to load but it’s very cool to look at.

Popular Shipped ROMS website now in suspended animation

After compiling and posting ROMs for hundreds of smartphones — from HTC, RIM, Motorola, and more — Conflipper is throwing in the towel and no longer updating his popular Shipped ROMS website. The decision is part of a compromise negotiated with HTC following a Cease and Desist letter from the handset manufacturer over these publicly available ROMs. As part of the agreement, Conflipper is permitted to keep all current ROMs on his site but is forbidden to upload any new ones
