In the Make: Online Toolbox, we focus mainly on tools that fly under the radar of more conventional tool coverage: in-depth tool-making projects, strange or specialty tools unique to a trade or craft that can be useful elsewhere, tools and techniques you may not know about, but once you do, and incorporate them into your workflow, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Amazon acquires touchscreen startup Touchco, will merge it with Kindle division

In what seems like some sensible business strategics, the  New York Times has just reported that Amazon has acquired Toucho, a New-York University based startup specializing in touchscreen technology. Amazon is said to merge Toucho’s technology as well as staff into its Kindle division, based in Cupertino, CA (guessing Amazon thinks Silicon Valley doesn’t have much to offer in the way of touch tech at the moment). Touchco uses a technology called interpolating force-sensitive resistance, which it puts into displays that can be completely transparent and could cost as little as $10 a square foot. The capacitive touch screens used in the iPad and iPhone are considerably more expensive

the great wall of ipads

Even though the iPad was just announced, there are already plenty of concepts emerging that could take advantage of the device. This one is somewhat interesting, but dubious. It’s basically a huge display made from a bunch of refurbished/recycled iPads. (Once there are refurbished/recycled iPads to be had.) This concept is by Clarke Hopkins Clarke from Melbourne Australia

Palm’s Mobile Hotspot on the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus not so hot [UPDATED]

Section: Communications , Cellphones , Smartphones , Broadband Cards , Mobile I guess I should file this under “good to know” because I had been thinking about replacing my MiFi with a Palm Pre Plus now that it has the Mobile Hotspot app available. But after reading a recent article over on jkOnTheRun I am pretty glad that I have been dragging my feet about making the switch because it seems that the data speeds from the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are not nearly as good as that of the MiFi. I guess device convergence is not always a good thing. According to the testing, the results were said to be “disappointing to say the least.” As far as the testing, it was noted that multiple tests were done with the MiFi, Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus. Additionally, the tests were done only in areas that offered full 3G reception.
