Keeping Kids Safe Cannot Be Outsourced
As I speak with parents (as I did two weeks ago when I spoke at St Mark’s Anglican Church on the topic of ’ How to keep our children safe online ‘), one thing continues to stand out – many parents have very little idea about what their children are doing online: both the opportunities and threats that the internet presents.

Hitachi Life Microscope Concept
Today for the 100th birthday of Hitachi creation, the company held some kind of little exhibition in Tokyo. Among many interesting product, we stumble upon the “Life Microscope” project, the next generation of pedometer. Well calling Hitachi “Life Microscope” a pedometer may not be fair to Hitatchi, but the concept is however relatively similar in its basic form.

KISS-Branded Flip HD Will Rock Your World, Wallet
You can write your own tongue joke for this one: ageing rock dinosaur group KISS has added a KISS-branded Flip HD to its tour merchandise as it subjects the USA to just one more round of “Rock And Roll All Night” and “Detroit Rock City”. At $US199, that’s a lot more than the typical $US150 price for the Flip, but any suggestions that you could get much the same effect by printing some cheap knock-off stickers would probably not be well received by the KISS faithful. We look forward to the inevitable KISS Kinect

LG Wine II Cell Phone Review–A Lesser Vintage
Sometimes the naming conventions on phones unnerve me. And today’s review target, the LG Wine II, is definitely one of those. Seriously, who names a phone “Wine”? What’s next, the Samsung Jack and Coke? Wait…they already did the Samsung Jack …oh man, it’s really only a matter of time until we get the Sony Ericsson Gin and Tonic! Seriously, though–names aside, the phone is more than the sum of its name, so how does it operate? The answer, sadly, is not that great. In fact, the LG Wine II proves to be a vintage best left in the bottle. The LG Wine II is a folder-style phone with an FM radio, voice recorder, Bluetooth connectivity, a phone book capable of storing ninety-nine name and number records, mobile web, text messaging, a two megapixel camera, alarm clock, calendar, calculator, hearing aid compatibility, and a battery that offers three hours and ten minutes of talk time on a single charge. You can see there’s not much to this at all. It’s an extremely simple, extremely basic phone that doesn’t bring a whole lot of power to the table. The battery power is low, the camera’s resolution is low, and the total number of features isn’t much better. However, the phone is pretty easy to operate and the end result of a lack of features is a very simple phone. If you want simple, then the LG Wine II will definitely go down smooth. However, those looking for a complex phone that serves lots of functions, then this rotgut of a phone will never satisfy. The Good Very simple to operate The Bad Low end camera Low end battery Relatively low number of features Score 4 / 10 Related Posts LG UX280 Wine Cell Phone Review–Terrific Piece It’s not every day I get to say a lot of really nice things about a cell phone. UK defense firm pumps data through solid submarine walls
Wireless power may still be on the drawing board, but wireless data is here today, and a UK defense contractor has figured out a way to pipe the latter through several inches of steel. Using a pair of piezoelectric transducers on either side of a watertight submarine compartment, BAE’s “Through Hull Data Link” sends and receives an acoustic wave capable of 15MHz data rates, enough to transmit video by essentially hammering ever-so-slightly on the walls. BAE impressed submarine commanders by streaming Das Boot right through their three-inch hulls, and while metadrama is obviously the killer app here, the company claims it will also save millions by replacing the worrisome wiring that’s physically routed via holes in a submarine’s frame. See the company’s full US patent application at our more coverage link.

Dell Streak available for purchase ‘in late July,’ says US product page
It’s funny to think, even after reviewing the device ( thrice , at this point ), that we still don’t have a US release date for Dell’s Streak . The company’s been uncharacteristically coy, but the stateside product page does offer this tantalizing tidbit: “available for purchase in late July.” That gives us a good 10-day window, so if you’ve been eyeballing that pre-sale button with intent to click, now might be the time jump on the list. Netflix plans discless Watch Instantly on the PS3 by late October, more ‘pure streaming’ worldwide
It’s still a pretty big window, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has narrowed down the time until we can expect a disc-free streaming experience on our PS3s from ” later this year ” to some time before its next earning call, which should happen around October 21. Other notes from the Q2 highlights included a shoutout to Hulu Plus , where Netflix “plans to learn what customers like about Hulu Plus” and use that to enhance its service, as well as the upcoming launch of a streaming service in Canada , and how the lessons learned may be applied to other “pure streaming” offerings internationally in the future. Investors aren’t too happy the company missed earnings projections, but we’re figuring once they close the ETrade window and pick up a Shockaxis they’ll start to get over it.
