InNova Patent Licensing LLC files infringement lawsuit against thirty-six companies over email spam patent
Texas-based InNova Patent Licensing LLC has filed a broad lawsuit against thirty-six defendants accusing them of infringement upon an email spam patent that was granted to InNova founder Robert Uomini. The patent describes a method of identifying incoming email as spam by using external context information obtained from the sender and according to Christopher Banys, lead counsel for InNova, it is “one of the building blocks for all email communications”. The thirty-six defendants are a motley crew and include technology giants like Google, Apple, Yahoo, RIM, and HP, retail giants like JCPenney Co., food manufacturers such as Frito-lay and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Inc, and finance stalwarts including JPMorgan Chase & Co and Wells Fargo & Company

Strange Bug on Japanese iPhones
I came across a report by a blogger in Japan about a curious problem some iPhone users are having there. It seems that in come cases, iPhones on the Softbank network fall prey to a bug (undocumented feature?) when updating to iOS 4 which spikes 3G data connections. You can make phone calls normally, and websurf via WiFi…but no net access or email via Softbank’s network. It seems that the update erases a certain profile needed for Softbank to recognize the phone on its data network, therefore preventing a connection. What’s more, it only seems to do that if the phone in question has been jailbroken in the past, even though it has the proper Apple sanctioned ROM installed currently

Onkyo’s new gadget is an HDMI 10.1 Digital Picture Frame
LPF10M01, is Onkyo latest gadget, and nope sorry this is not a “audio” related product nor a notebook, but interestingly a Digital Picture frame. CDMA-based Motorola WX404 caught on FCC on its way to Cricket or MetroPCS
According to the documents found on the Federal Communications Commission’s website, a new Motorola phone (WX404) is heading to Cricket Wireless or MetroPCS. We’re not sure which of the two carriers will be adding the QWERTY keyboard-equipped candybar to its portfolio, but without a doubt we’ll know that in the next couple of weeks. In addition to the mentioned keyboard, the Motorola WX404 also rocks Bluetooth connectivity, tri-band (850/1700/1900 MHz) CDMA radio, some camera, headset jack, media player and a microSD memory card slot, while Qualcomm’s BREW platform is running the show.

New digital comic publisher Mangako is launching its first comic exclusively for iPhone and iPod Touch – Impact City. Since it’s made for the two iDevices only, there’s no need to scroll around to read the comic. Symbian Developer Cooperative NGO launches; Allows anyone to participate in Symbian Foundation
A new interesting thing is happening in the world of Symbian. The Symbian Developer Cooperative (Symbian DevCo), a non-profit, independent organisation has been founded to raise the profile of individuals within the Symbian community and give them a voice in the governance of the Symbian platform. Here’s the problem. Although Symbian Foundation has turned Symbian OS into an open-source project, only the member companies can vote on the future direction of the platform. Enter Symbian DevCo, which will gather individuals who now could participate in the shaping of the future of Symbian Foundation.

Windows Phone 7 To Feature Only Bing As Search Engine
While Apple has recently expanded the iPhone ’s search capabilities to include Microsoft’s Bing search engine, it seems that Microsoft won’t be returning the favor. Pocket-Lint recently sat down with Microsoft’s senior product manager Greg Sullivan to question him over Windows Phone 7’s search capabilities. Originally, it was thought that users would be able to designate the default search engine just by changing the settings but that doesn’t seem to be the case. According to Mr. Sullivan, Bing will be the only search engine featured on Windows Phone 7 with him justifying the decision by saying that the developers have integrated the search engine too deeply into the mobile operating system

HP Slate Back in the Cards?
A few days ago, several tech blogs reported that tucked away on the HP website was a product page for the HP Slate, now being called the HP Slate 500, which was taken down soon after being discovered. I assumed it was an error or a lingering vestige of the original HP Slate which was supposedly cancelled to kick off Microsoft’s “Month of the Long Mobile Knives” as I call it, which also saw the end of the Courier project, J Allard and Robbie Bach’s careers in Redmond and the Kins. The HP Slate was to run Windows 7 on a 8.9 inch touchscreen with a 1.6GHz Atom chip but was dumped, taken out of all sorts of released roadmaps.

Mossberg Sort of Likes Galaxy S, Hell Getting Chilly
A fresh report dropped into my “Who’d a Thunk It” bin this morning, directing me to Walt Mossberg’s review of two Galaxy S phones from Samsung, the Vibrant on T-Mobile and the Captivate on AT&T. After reading the review through a couple times, it dawned on me slowly…he actually liked the phones. Of course, he mentioned the Apple iPhone in the piece almost as much as he does the phones he is actually reviewing, but I don’t think he can help that anymore

It’s long been known that Facebook is the reigning champ when it comes to social networks and today they have released numbers to solidfy that fact. Apparantly, Facebook has just surpassed 500 million active users a number that has grown by 100 million since Februrary of this year.
