3D portion of HDMI 1.4 specs available to public
HDMI Licensing, LLC announced a few moments ago that the three-dimensional portion of HDMI 1.4 specifications is now available for public download at the official HDMI site. With HDMI specs for 3D already out, we may see 3DTVs come to market even sooner than we may think. ”The HDMI Consortium recognizes the importance of standardized 3D formats for movies, gaming and broadcast content and the need for non-adopter companies and organizations to have access to that portion of the HDMI Specification,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. “As the mainstream adoption of 3D is gaining momentum and content providers define and expand their 3D roadmaps, HDMI is ready to support this major market development.” HDMI has simplified my A/V/ lifestyle, combining multiple audio and video signals into one connection, I only require a single HDMI cable for each device hooked up to my receiver. This move insures that 3D viewing technology will definitely be available to consumers in the near future. WebOS homebrew MyTether app updated, brings WiFi hotspots to Verizon Palms w/o the extra subscription
Since the last time we mentioned it, the MyTether app for WebOS phones has gone up in price from a requested $10 donation to $14.95, but that’s still considerably cheaper than Verizon’s $40 per month Mobile Hotspot plan. We’re still leery about what usage/overusage could mean for your contract & bill, but a new beta version has been posted that officially supports the Pre Plus and according to the developer “makes use of the API calls behind MHS” to let it work more smoothly. Even with the Pre’s openness to hackery we had some issues getting the beta installer to operate on our Windows 7 machine but once it was installed it worked as promised, giving comparable speeds to a dedicated EV-DO card on the same network

Shape Services, makers of the popular IM+ chat client, has announced that it has updated the IM+ for Skype app for BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) to offer free WiFi-based Skype calls. The update makes IM+ for Skype the only BlackBerry app that allows free Skype calls – even internationally

Revo Ikon Could Tempt Me To Buy A Digital Radio
Considering the sheer number of internet radio stations available to stream for free through my PC, the concept of an ad-laden digital radio station does nothing for me. The cost of upgrading your radio hardware is also a bit of turn off. But the Revo Ikon digital radio also features a dock for your iPod or iPhone and a nifty little touchscreen, which might just be enough to tempt me over to the DAB+ side… (more…)

Samsung Alias 2 Cell Phone Review–Strange and Lacking
Samsung, give them credit, loves to push that old industrial design envelope by making strange new control designs for their products. It’s only too bad that, most of the time, these industrial design features often wind up being little more than lipstick on a pig. And today’s polished turd will be the Samsung Alias 2. The Samsung Alias 2 is a convertible flip style cell phone that offers call timer, conference call ability, voice recorder, caller ID, Bluetooth connectivity, TTY compatibility, VZ Navigator, Chaperone parent/child, a sixteen gig microSD card slot, V CAST Music, Rhapsody, GPS, speakerphone, a phone book with capacity for a thousand names and numbers, mobile email, internet browser, a two megapixel digital camera, and a battery capable of generating five hours of talk time on one charge. The first thing you’ll notice about this phone is its bizarre and thoroughly outlandish controls. It will take quite a bit of getting used to to get this thing to work properly. And the worst part is that, though the controls are spectacularly unique, there’s not a whole lot here for the keypad to actually control in the first place. The Samsung Alias 2 is short on tools and long on weird. The end result is a phone much less than you actually could get elsewhere. The Good Gutsy and highly original design The Bad Short on features Huge learning curve Score 4/10 Related Posts Samsung Alias Cell Phone Along with the BlackBerry Curve 8330 and the LG enV2, Verizon is also releasing the new Samsung Alia..

Symbian OS going free and open source for first time
Starting Thursday , the source code for Symbian’s operating system platform will become entirely open source and free (Symbian’s software currently powers most of the smartphones in the world, and is owned by Nokia). Tomorrow hence the day developers will be able to download, alter, and apply the software at no costs at all. “The dominant operating system provider out there is Symbian,” says Lee Williams, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, “and now we are offering developers the ability to do so much more.” Symbian software is used on over 330 million phones around the world, as stated by the Symbian Foundation. It’s facing increasingly dynamic competition in the smart phone arena from Apple’s iPhone OS platform as well as Google’s Android OS, the two front-runners at the moment. However, Symbian phones have never topped sales charts in the US – will that start to change soon? The Pirate Party Hedged Its Bets On Today’s iiNet Trial
It makes sense that anyone involved (or even anyone with a real interest) in today’s iiNet vs AFACT court ruling would prepare a statement for either outcome. Then, when the victor was announced, they could send the appropriate release. But the Australian Pirate Party was über-keen, sending out a press release for both outcomes just after midnight last night. (more…)

Next iPhone may possibly record HD video in 720p?
Okay, so Apple’s iPod Nano doesn’t exactly have the best video recording of all gadgets, but HD video is gradually shaping up to be a crucial feature to be included in next-generation devices. Some hints have surfaced that HD video may just be implemented on the next iPhone. If you’ve seen our post on the “N89” codename in the iPhone OS SDK, a tipster has just taken a look at the MediaValidator.plist file - it reveals several enlightening stats: the maximum video width is up from 768 pixels to 1280, and the maximum number of pixels per frame is up to 921,600, resulting in a 1280 x 720 resolution. The device’s AVC profile has been bumped from 3.0 to 3.1, too, which adds support for 720p

Welcome to the Godwin Event Horizon
The other day I was stuck in the midst of what had become a very heated debate regarding video game DRM (digital rights management), DLC (downloadable content), disks, downloads, rights, and piracy … and was amazed that in spite of strong opinions and polarized stances that the heated discussion stayed pretty respectful and stayed away from foul language, personal attacks, and other things that typify a ‘flame war’. It was in stark contrast to a discussion I briefly entered late last week that … [ visit site to read more ] Related posts: Social Media needs disclosure aka you can’t tell the vendors from the regular folk Is Greed Good on the Internet

Apple gets a patent on smart screen bezels
Apple might have finally released the iPad , but the rumor mill is already on to prognosticating about the next rev — and as usual, Apple’s patents and patent applications are everyone’s favorite place to start. (And for good reason, really — that very first design patent we inititally noticed way back in 2004 is exactly what the iPad looks like, down to the bezel and Dock connector.) The latest tidbit is a patent granted earlier this week on an intelligent touch-sensitive bezel, which would essentially extend the touchpanel beyoned the edges of the screen to create an entire border of context-specific soft buttons — the iPod app might have playback controls at the bottom, while Safari could put the navigation bar down there and Pages could do formatting stuff at the top. It’s sort of interesting — Palm similarly extends the touch area beyond the screen on the Pre and the Pixi, but not quite like this — but we can’t see how touching the bezel next to an on-screen label is much better than just pressing the screen. Of course, there’s no guaranteeing Apple’s actually going to use any of this in any future products whatsoever, but we’re sure that won’t stop some analyst from waving their magic analyst wand and saying their “supply checks” have indicated a major ODM is already producing these.

Sony may start charging for PSN?
Well, we can all blame Hulu for starting the no-more-free content movement, now since Sony may also start charging users for access to the PSN service. This doesn’t exactly encourage me to get the new PS3 I was considering, Sony. The head of PSN revealed in an interview with IGN today: “Maybe a longer answer to a shorter question, but I think there is just tremendous improvements to the PlayStation Network, which leads me to your last question: will we charge for it or why don’t we charge for it? It’s been our philosophy not to charge for it from launch up until now, but Kaz recently went on the record as saying that’s something we’re looking at. I can confirm that as well.

brain freeze ice cubes let you zombies drink your braaaaains
While you might float lots of things in your cocktails, I’m pretty sure that human brains aren’t normally on the list. Now you can serve up some brains with your drinks thanks to these whimsical ice cube forms. New from Fred & Friends, these Brain Freeze ice cube trays let you crank out four blobs of frozen cerebral matter to present to your party guests. And while they’re shown frozen with crystal clear water in the photo above, I think they’d be even better if you swirled some red and purple food coloring into your cubes for the optimal effect. Even though it’s only February, I’m definitely ordering some of these for next Halloween.

nick gentry’s floppy disk paintings offer recycled memories
Even though you don’t want to admit it, you probably still got a stash of floppy disks hidden around somewhere, just like you probably have a stash of cassette tapes hidden in a pile of old stuff. For some geeks, it’s hard to throw out old technology-related stuff, kind of like how some fashionistas have trouble throwing out old clothes. Heck, I probably have 4-6 old computers in storage at home. I don’t know why, but I still do.

Symbian’s revealing something tomorrow, but what? (update: open source!)
Oh, Symbian, you tease ! For an organization as committed to openness and sharing its roadmap (and its code) as the Symbian Foundation , it’s pretty unusual that they’d be counting down to a big unveiling of anything — but sure enough, they’ve been tweeting decreasing numbers with the hashtag “#symbiancountdown” starting back on January 26 with 108. Today we’re down to 12 (it’s hard to say what sort of jacked-up counting system they’re using here) with a note of “what will tomorrow bring?” so it looks like we can expect this all to go down in just a few short hours. One thought is that they could announce that Symbian^3 has gone Functionally Complete, a key milestone in getting it pushed to devices — but that’s a shot in the dark

Video: Nexus One multi-touch pinch zooming demo
The Nexus One in my pocket has just been blessed with Google ( NSDQ: GOOG )’s software update , which enables multi-touch pinch zooming in the web browser, photo gallery, and Google Maps apps. The lack of multi-touch support on the Nexus One’s Android 2.1 OS is considered by many to be the biggest drawback that’s keeping the N1 from truly challenging the iPhone 3GS. But, now that Google is rolling out the N1 software update over the air, the multi-touch argument no longer holds water. Which is the better smartphone? Well, here’s a little video demonstration of me multi-touching the N1 like it’s going out of style.
