The Keys to Great App Discoverability-App Store Tricks for Mobile 2.0 (PART I)

I will be presenting some ideas from my book, Location Aware Applications, next week in Malta, which made me think about an issue that keeps popping up time and again in mobile development: how to get a great app downloaded by thousands of users. With an ‘app universe’ of over 300,000 applications , over 8 mobile development platforms and over 50 app stores to choose from, it is has never been this tough to pick the right distribution option(s). And if you zoom into individual App Stores, the level of detail becomes even more

BlackBerry Playbook: The RIM tablet

Today RIM (Research in Motion) finally introduced the world to the BlackBerry Playbook. The Playbook is a 7-inch tablet that RIM hopes will be a healthy competitor to the Apple iPad , and runs its own custom version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS. The insides of this thing sound pretty good as well, and almost put the iPad to shame: a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, front and rear facing cameras that both support high definition, Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration, HDMI out, USB, and HTML5 support. It’s got a widescreen 1024 x 600 display that supports multi-touch, and RIM was proud to announce that the Playbook will connect with BlackBerry enterprise servers right out of the box.

Apple updates Ping, still annoying and restrictive

Over the weekend, Apple released iTunes 10.0.1, which mainly adds a sidebar to the music library for interaction with their Ping social network . The change makes it easier to “like” and “post” music that’s in your iTunes library to Ping, without having to actually go into the Ping area of the store.

HP Slate – Fiction or Non Fiction?

We’ve seen some talk about the HP Slate coming back.  It was canned several months ago, but just recently we’ve started to hear about reviews and product spotted out in the wild.  Most recently is a blog post from Engadget [source for these images]: It’s well known the Slate was canceled back in March and I find it very unlikely the company would about-face yet again to re-launch the tablet PC. My theory is the guy posting video on the web, is a guy who got his hands on a prototype unit while it was in development.  The HP Slate most likely had hundreds if not thousands of prototypes made and clearly some of them have leaked into the public sector. The HP Slate shown in the video on Engadget’s site does show so interesting tips.  For example the processing time to switch between landscape and portrait.  We also like the SD and USB connectivity along with nice dock station for the tablet PC.  In our opinion, these to features alone, set it apart from the iPad product. Of course, we’ll leave it up to you to decide.

Texts from Last Night App Delights in Debauchery, and Lets Users Vote

If you’re of a certain age—read: you’re a college student—you likely already know all about Texts From Last Night , or TFLN for short. TFLN is a Webby Award-winning website , a popular Facebook group , a book, a soon-to-be TV series on the Fox network, and, now, an iPhone app . The basics of the iPhone app are just like those of the full-featured website: Texts From Last Night is a stream of user-submitted text messages from, you guessed it, last night. Users may submit their own text message to the stream, and the texts are up-voted or down-voted by other users, Reddit style. The most popular part of the app/website is probably the “Top Nights” feature, which is a collection of the most up-voted texts, organized by day, week, month, or all time.

Tokyoflash Optical illusion LED watch

New from Tokyoflash Design Studios is a watch that will test your vision and make you look sophisticated at the same time. It’s so ‘00s to tell someone who struggles to read an analog clock that they can’t tell time, but with this tricky digital watch you can pretty much call anyone out. Hiding in plain sight within a green and black optical illusion, the time can be revealed to the less perceptive eye with the touch of a button. But don’t tell anyone the secret when they ask you for the time in the mall.

Nokia Push T-Shirt Winners Announced

First and foremost, thanks to the 23 of you that entered the Nokia Push T-Shirt Giveaway . Sadly everyone can’t be a winner and as I have 5 T-Shirts to giveaway we could only have four winners. Why four, well one of the t-shirts is a “ladies small” and as there weren’t any entries which looked evidently clear as females I’ll be giving that away on Twitter. Seems like the tech scene is still dominated by males. Moving on…

Garmin: Pair of Skiing GPS Units – Dakota 20 and Oregon 450

Garmin is teaming up with Mountain Dynamics SnowRanger ski resort maps to create skiing editions of their popular handheld GPS units. Paper maps are so 1985 when you have an electronic option available, especially a GPS that can tell you distance skied and max elevation. So, while this isn’t a big departure from what types of data are available on a regular handheld, having the mountain maps available on the GPS is a nice addition to the day, especially if you are skiing some of the bigger mountain in the Rockies or over in Europe. The maps offer the lifts, the trail difficulty, and even insight into the topography through contour lines or shading
