Fallen Earth MMO Getting an iPhone App

The post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online role-playing game , Fallen Earth , has just announced an in-depth iPhone app that lets you take care of quite a bit of in-game business from your mobile. For those not familiar with the genre, MMOs are generally subscription-based computer games that take place wholly online with other players (either cooperatively or competitively, as the case may be). Players control characters in the shared game world to embark on missions, gather equipment, craft items, and a bunch of other stuff.

U.S. Army and EnerDel team up for electric-hybrid Humvee

EnerDel, who we last saw soaking up some of that Joe Biden stimulus money , is teaming up with the U.S. Army to develop a battery solution for a hybrid Humvee . Of course, your High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle is by its nature very large and very heavy — great for dropping out of airplanes, perhaps, but not so great a candidate for electric power. Two of the company’s battery chemistries will tested in the program, including lithium-manganese spinel (for extending electric vehicle range and electronic systems runtime) and lithium-titanate system (for the hard acceleration and braking required)

3G packing Dell Mini 3iX approved by FCC

We reported not too long ago on a Dell Mini 3iX Android based smartphone heading for Brazil, well apparently the Dell Mini 3iX is now also headed for the USA, as unwired view reports that the FCC has just approved the Dell Mini 3iX smartphone. The Dell Mini 3iX packs GSM 850/1900 and UNTS bands so all that’s really needed is a combined announcement from AT&T and Dell. Spec wise the Dell Mini 3iX sports a 3.5 inch touch screen, A-GPS, Microsoft Exchange, a 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus and WiFi, but no word as to which Android OS version the Dell Mini 3iX will run.

Unused Adamo XPS prototypes reveal touchscreen trackpads, key-less keyboard

Dell certainly managed to cram plenty of inventive, even far-fetched touches into its Adamo XPS laptop, but it looks like it went even further out on a limb during the prototype stage, as PC World was able to discover during a brief hands-on time with a few cast off concepts. As you might expect, one of the ideas Dell toyed around with was a full-fledged touchscreen trackpad, which was apparently rejected because Dell couldn’t justify the cost of the panel based how much people would actually use it. Another, possibly even more ambitious concept is one that would have completely replaced the traditional keyboard with a series of capacitive-touch buttons (pictured after the break), which would have allowed for a true zero-profile design, albeit at some potential expense to usability. Hit up the link below for a look at a few more prototypes

It’s not a bazooka, but this altered instrument makes it look like the player is toking off of some type of weapon. [Kyle] wanted to take the already mysterious sounds produced by a didgeridoo then capture and alter them electronically . The physical build of this project is nothing short of beautiful. He’s mounted several curved control boards to the outside of the instrument. The controls feature six push buttons, five toggle switches, and six potentiometers that interface with an Arduino

Verizon offers Internet tethering on Motorola Droid, for a price

There’s more to the Droid than its high-end spec-sheet and Android 2.0 OS. Turns out, Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) Wireless is going to let Droid owners use their new smartphone as a 3G modem. But, it’ll cost ‘ya. In return for allowing you to connect your laptop to your Droid and use its 3G data connection to hop online (tethering), Verizon will ask that you hand over an additional $30 per month – that’s on top of the $30/month data plan that gives you 5GB of data per monthly billing cycle. The tethering option basically doubles the cost ($60) of the Droid data plan, which gives you a total 10GB of data allowance.

AT&T gets FCC approval for purchase of Centennial Wireless

If you’re a big telecommunications company there is the hard way to add 893,000 customers to your portfolio — by working to provide hardware and services that people value and want — then there is the easy way. Cutting a check. Today, the FCC gave AT&T the final go ahead to purchase US wireless carrier Centennial Wireless for a cool $944 million. The acquisition will bolster AT&T’s presence in the midwest, southwest, and Puerto Rico, although we’re not sure how, if at all, it will impact their 3G footprint

The DROID is live!

The Motorola Droid is live on Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) Wireless! Following weeks of hype and impressive TV ads , the highly anticipated Android phone from Motorola ( NYSE: MOT ) has landed on US shores. Verizon Wireless stores across the country opened for business bright and early this morning to accommodate the masses of Droid hopefuls yearning to be the first of their friends with Verizon’s new smartphone. The midnight launch in Manhattan saw something like 100 people waiting in line for a Droid. The store in Palo Alto, California, said they had a line of about 10 people when they swung their doors open at 7am, and has since been seeing a steady flow of customers coming in with Droid on the brain. The crowds aren’t bad right now.
