Motorola Spice is the sixth new Android smartphone that the company has announced at CTIA this fall, after the Motorola Droid Pro , Motorola Citrus , Motorola Bravo, Motorola Flipside and Motorola Flipout . The Spice is a vertical slider (like the now-outdated Palm Pre) with a 4-row QWERTY keyboard and a 3 inch QVGA touchscreen display. LG Optimus 7 E900 WP7 handset appears in press photos
Although LG has officially announced the Optimus 7 Windows Phone 7 handset last month, it didn’t provide any official photos of it (the QWERTY smartphone seen in the press release talking abut the Optimus 7 was actually the GW910 Panther ). Luckily, BestBoyz.de has just unveiled some press photos of the Optimus 7 E900 , showing it to be quite a looker. The photos also show a 5MP photo camera with LED flash and HD video recording. Other features are yet to be confirmed. Like Samsung , LG will probably showcase its first Windows Phone 7 smartphones on October 11

Slow spammers to a crawl with SMTP tarpitting
Whether conducting directory harvest attacks against servers, or just slamming them with a dictionary list of possible recipients, spammers frequently use automated scripts that use SMTP commands, but don’t behave like SMTP servers. These scripts can be as basic as opening a telnet session to TCP port 25 on a server, and running through the commands defined in RFC 821 to send emails, including just the basic HELO, MAIL FROM:, RCPT TO:,DATA:, SUBJECT:, and QUIT. Frequently these scripts just execute the command as fast as the system can run through the commands, instead of waiting for the appropriate responses to come from the servers. One effective way to help servers resist these sorts of efforts is to implement tarpitting. Named for the geological feature of lakes of naturally occurring asphalt (bitumen) where unlucky animals can wander in, become trapped in the sticky tar, and never escape, tarpits in networking are systems configured to trap misbehaving network connections by slowing down responses to a crawl

GetJar in Games Giveaway
GetJar is an important player amongst app stores, and despite the headlines that tend to be given to the main stores like the Apple App Store, Android Market and OVI Store, GetJar has a position as the number two store online, with an average of 100 million downloads per day. To celebrate the continued success of the GetJar store, the site is arranging to give away premium game titles from Glu Mobile, starting with Stranded: Mysteries of Time, with other titles such as Brain Genius 2, Build-a-lot and Race Driver Grid. Ilja Laurs, founder and CEO for GetJar said: “This revolutionary new business model will fundamentally change the app industry economics and give consumers access to many more apps at a lower cost or in GetJar’s case – free. Everyone benefits – consumers can download all applications for free and get access to unique content regardless of the phone model they use, and now with GetJar+, millions of consumers get exclusive access to content that would normally require payment to download.

Verizon Announces Motorola CITRUS, to be Light on Wallet
This particular handset will be overshadowed by the Droid Pro when CTIA officially begins tomorrow, no doubt. It just doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles, but the newly announced Motorola Citrus will be geared toward the entry-level Android crowd, or anyone who is looking to get into their first smartphone but wants to keep the cost down and still get most of the same functionality.

Droid Pro, Meet World; World, Droid Pro.
CTIA is like Christmas coming twice a year because of all the goodies that come out of the show itself. CTIA is officially opening the show floor later today but we’ve seen plenty of pre-conference meetings and announcements showing up already. This one is the Droid Pro, which looks absolutely nothing like any of the other phones from the Droid series; this one appears to be more Blackberry-like in nature, as a candybar with 3.1 touchscreen display and full QWERTY keyboard meshed together on top of Froyo goodness. From what I can tell from the press release, the Droid Pro will be more focused toward the business customer; “designed for work and play”.
