Verizon iPhone to enter mass production by year’s end

There have been so many rumors of a CDMA iPhone headed to Verizon over the past few years that at this point it could be really tough to believe that it may actually be happening. But the sudden increase, over the past couple of months, in chatter indicating that a Verizon iPhone is imminent, does point to the rumors finally coming to life. Ironically, Apple may have started working on a CDMA iPhone long after the first rumors about the supposed device came to light. In a similar fashion to what happened with the original iPhone and the iPad . Anyway, today the Wall Street Journal is reporting that “people briefed by Apple” have found out that mass production for a Verizon iPhone shall start before the end of this year.

Dream Machine: What Makes The Perfect Phone?

a flux capacitor for your phone? If you were to ask 100 people what their perfect smartphone would be, you can guarantee that it would never be possible to make. While that seems like a bold statement, a phone that did everything would be sure to cost more than any normal phone owner could ever afford, not to mention how big it have to be to fit in the necessary software, hardware, flux capacitor and espresso maker as requested. Instead, it’s easier to think about a handful of things a phone should have to make it perfect for everyday use. Here’s a list of ten things to look for in a phone that might just make up for not being able to brew us a morning cup of Joe

Google Goggles Comes to the iPhone

Google Goggles is one of those neat little applications that until you use it, you never realise just how useful it can be. The application has been available on Android devices since December last year, and now the app has come to the iPhone, with the latest Google App for iPhone update. What Google Goggles does, is to make a search based on an image captured on your phone. This could be a landmark, cover of a book, DVD, magazine, company logo, etc, and once captured Google Goggles will analyse the image and make a search based on the results. You can also train Google Goggles, so if a result returns unsatisfactory results, you can give feedback to help Google improve the app in a future release

AT&T announces its first LTE-compatible device and new Pantech Laser QWERTY phone

AT&T has yet to roll out its LTE/4G network , but that doesn’t mean it can’t announce LTE-compatible devices, right? The first AT&T device capable of supporting LTE is the LG Adrenaline USB dongle – which will receive a software upgrade to work on the carrier’s 4G network when this launches (sometime in 2011). Until then, the dongle will provide access to HSPA and Wi-Fi to customers who sign up for DataConnect or DataConnect Pass plans.

WD’s My Book External USB 3.0 Drive Joins 3TB Club

3TB hard drives aren’t exclusive to Seagate now as Western Digital has just announced its own to join none other than the My Book Essential external drive family. The WD’s 3TB – a Caviar Green drive – is based on a 4-platter so the drive actually has 750GB per platter compared with 600GB per platter for the Seagate version. Whether or not this will have an impact on performance remains to be seen. The WD’s My Book Essential also comes with a special MBR hack to allow device to report 4k clusters to Windows XP as the OS wouldn’t be able to handle drives past 2.2TB. Also unlike the Seagate GoFlex modular adapter approach , the WD’s My Book goes with a single USB 3.0 connection

UK: Nokia N8 available online on October 15th, in stores October 22nd

The Nokia N8 will finally become available in the UK on October 22nd. Prior to that, you will be able to order it online (but only from Nokia’s own store) starting on October 15th. This is the phone that was announced many months ago and that has started shipping on September 30th , though not to the UK apparently. Those who have pre-ordered N8s may get them sooner but if you’ve only now made up your mind you’ll still have a bit of waiting to do. Granted, the N8 does seem to be available to buy in other countries, but having it available in the UK (one of the most important markets in Europe) three weeks after the end of Q3 (that was the shipping target that Nokia had all along) still counts as a delay in my book

Chrome makes play for minds and hearts of administrators

Google celebrated the two-year anniversary of its Chrome web browser this month by making some changes to it designed to encourage administrators to cast a more approving eye on the software. Generally, administrators are a tough lot when it comes to change. Their plates are usually full and it takes a compelling sell to persuade them to desert the status quo. If Microsoft has difficulties weaning many administrators from Internet Explorer 6, with its horrendous security record, to a safer version of the software, how does Google expect to induce administrators to bolt to an entirely new web browser? One way, it appears, is to give administrators greater control over how Chrome behaves

HP confirms Palm WebOS phones for early next year (CES 2011 launch?)

Palm hasn’t introduced a single new device since April this year, when the company was bought by HP – which now also owns WebOS. So if you’re wondering when new Palm handsets will be introduced, it looks like the answer is “early next year.” HP’s Senior Vice President Eric Cador recently said so , unfortunately without providing more details. One of the future HP-Palm phones could be the Palm Mansion , which should feature a large WVGA touchscreen display, no hardware QWERTY keyboard and, most likely, WebOS 2.0 (pictured below). Early next year is also when the rumored WebOS-based HP PalmPad should be introduced. Since Palm was present both at CES 2009 and CES 2010 (for unveiling the Pre and Pixi – and, one year later, their Plus versions), CES 2011 seems to be a good place for the new WebOS devices to be announced.

Microsoft’s futuristic Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller

While I didn’t like Minority Report as a movie per se, it’s visions of the future and various human/computer interfaces still fascinate me. Most of them will require technologies way beyond of what is available today, but getting from here to there has to start somewhere. And quite a few companies are already working on the bits and pieces of Minority Report’ish tech in their R&D labs
