“I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” Goes GSM and GPS
Remember the “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” TV commercials from the 80’s? The advertised product was a personal emergency response system (PERS) for seniors that included a base station and a pendant that interfaced with an analog phone to dial out for help when the pendant’s button was pressed. MobileHelp is a more modern version of that device. It incorporates GSM and GPS features so the person using the product isn’t restricted to their home

Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis
We’ve heard of a few inventive ideas for detecting tsunamis, and it looks like a group of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA ) have now come up with another: put all those undersea internet cables to a second use. While they haven’t moved beyond computer models just yet, the group has apparently found that voltmeters attached to the end of an undersea cable are able to detect the small electric field stirred up by tsunamis, which measure around 500 millivolts. As New Scientist reports, however, the idea does have some considerable limitations, including that it wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the exact location or direction of a tsunami, and that any such system would first need to filter out noise caused by other natural events and even the cable itself. Other researchers also caution that it’s just as important to develop a system to quickly pass on a warning to potentially affected areas once a tsunami has been detected. Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:02:00 EST.

Theme Review Wednesday: Heart Chick, Halcyon, BerryShell
Hunting for new BlackBerry themes has become a new joy to me. When we started doing the theme review feature, I kind of slogged along, dreading the bi-weekly ritual of finding and then testing themes (made even harder when I had an incompatible device and have to borrow). That changed recently, and now I enjoy reading about new themes on different sites and then loading them up.

Mini Ultraman Is Getting Sunstroke
Put this mini Ultraman in the sun and he will nod his head randomly during what I can only assume are hallucinations brought on by sunstroke. Yeah, he is looking a little pale…and his head is kind of swollen in the shape of a TV. Also available in the standard version pictured after the break.

ASUS exec confirms Eee Pad tablet plans, picks a bad day
We’ve been hearing rumors of a Tegra-powered Eee Pad tablet for quite a while now, and it looks like ASUS exec Eric Chen has now finally confirmed the obvious, responding to a question about ASUS’ tablet plans by saying, “yes, sure. We have the Eee Pad.” Unfortunately, he didn’t offer too much else in the way of details, saying only that it will have an ARM CPU and a 3G connection, and that Asus is paying particular attention to the user interface (even citing the iPhone as an example)

Android Controls Robot, Human Enslavement Imminent
You know when Google ( NSDQ: GOOG )’s mobile operating system is capable of controlling the movements of a $3000 Japanese robot, it’s only a matter of time before even bigger robots fall under Android’s devious sway – throw in a dash of self-awareness, and you’ve got a dystopian future where an amalgamate mothermind of Android phones independently controls legions of disposable (yet deceptively adorable) robots and Christian Bale cusses off coworkers in between the dropping bombshells. For now, though, this 9” PLEN robot can do stuff through a standard directional or an accelerometer-controlled joystick interface on an Android phone, like hug (crush), kick (violently), walk (with grim determination), turn (on its oppressive human overlords), and even do a little dance (in celeberation, over the smouldering corpse of mankind). PLEN can get mobile thanks to a skateboard or a wheeled-foot attachment, but we didn’t see any controls for those in the Android app, and good thing; the last thing I want are robots using the shattered cities of our civilization to pull wicked air in a 1080 goofy-foot ollie. BlackBerry Curve 8910 Accidentally Shown at CES?
A couple of days ago, a member on CrackBerry Forums noticed that the un-released BlackBerry Curve 8910 did show up at CES 2010. The new Curve 8910 was shown off at a Case-Mate display with their new Fuel lite case. Apparently the Curve 8910 was listed as a Bold 9700, however you can clearly tell its not.

T-Shirt: IT’S A (CHINESE FINGER) TRAP!
This is today’s woot.shirt . It’s Admiral Ackbar stuck in a Chinese finger trap. Unfortunately, they already sold out of the first run of (3,000) tees before I woke up this morning. But fear not, the shirt will most definitely be available again next week during The Reckoning (somebody remind me and I’ll post a link) so you can go pick one up for $15. Then we can all wear them to Geekologie-con and point and laugh at each other’s funny t-shirts like giddy little schoolgirls

Is this the Apple tablet? (update: new images)
Okay, we obviously can’t confirm this, but we just got two very interesting images of what certainly looks like a prototype Apple tablet , or what could be the tablet bolted down to a table . It’s big — really big — and it’s running what clearly looks like an iPhone app , although we’ve never seen an iPhone app with that interface or at that resolution before. We also see a WiFi icon and a cell service indicator, although tragically there’s no carrier listed.

Star Wars (Chess) In 3D!
No, Lucas hasn’t officially announced a 3D version of Star Wars (although the release of Avatar might be the driving force that finally makes it happen), but there is a 3D chess board scheduled to come out next month. The image is grainy and there isn’t much info, but the board appears to include pieces with “beloved Star Wars characters” that use “the latest in motion printed technology.” Product Page (£18 or $29/Pre-Order for 2/28)

Emotiv Epoq brain-control headset gets reviewed: frustrating
Emotiv’s brain-reading Epoq gaming headset has been floating around for a while now, but it’s only recently that customers finally received their orders. One such early adopter is Rick Dakan over at Joystiq, who slapped down $299 for an Epoq of his own. Unfortunately, while the theory may be great, the implementation is sadly lacking. From the start, the Epoq is difficult to wear, with sixteen individual head-pads that each need to be separately moistened and slotted into place

Samsung SRT746AWTN WiFi refrigerator with digital photo frame tipped
WiFi isn’t the sort of thing you’ll usually find in a refrigerator – an old jar of mayo, perhaps, and a shrivelled looking tomato – but Samsung want to change that. Fresh through WiFi certification [pdf link] is the Samsung SRT746AWTN, a refrigerator with an integrated digital photo frame. Beyond that scant description and the WiFi b/g 2.4GHz support we’re in the dark about the white appliance’s specifications, but then again this isn’t What Fridge? you’re reading. We’re guessing a straightforward embedded digital photo frame in one of the Samsung’s doors, to which you can stream photos either locally on the network or from various internet galleries; hopefully there’ll be some internet access for recipes, too.

Nokia wants to turn mobile phones into mobile radars
Today, Nokia unveiled that it’s working on a “mobile radar” concept at its Nokia Research Center (NRC) in Helsinki. Nokia has implemented an active radar sensor into a phone, allowing it “to measure speed and the direction of movement of approaching objects, just like a traditional RADAR would.” The mobile radar technology could be used in controlling your phone’s functions with hand gestures, in personal safety, or in sport. It might be used in gaming, too – perhaps something similar to Nintendo’s Wii, but played on a phone. A video demonstration of the mobile radar (on a Nokia N95) can be watched below: Nokia didn’t say when (or if) we’ll be able to buy phones with mobile radars included. UPDATE: Odds are good that the iPad will NOT replace my B&N nook
I have mentioned several times here on this blog how much I like using my B&N nook, including how nothing I saw at CES could knock it out of my hands. However, I have been thinking quite a bit about this upcoming Apple Tablet device to be announced in a few hours and honestly think it could take the place of the nook as an ebook reader. The revelation last night from McGraw-Hill’s CEO that the Tablet runs the iPhone OS actually has me more excited about the device than if it ran the OS X, from an ebook reader perspective.
