Infographic: Who’s Suing Who In Mobile

As the mobile industry continues to grow exponentially and newcomers displace old-timers in terms of devices, services and nearly everything else in the mobile ecosystem, litigation continues to run rampant.  Whether it’s disputes over patent infringement, anti-trust inquiries or even the “handling of digital images,” a lawsuit seems to be the easiest answer for companies large and small. David McCandless, a data journalist and designer, put together this awesome infographic published on his Website “Information is Beautiful” [embedded below] to visually identify who’s suing whom in the telecom world.  He even differentiates between ongoing and finished lawsuits with different arrows, while the size of the cubes represent the various company’s estimated revenue.  In addition, if a company’s cube is red, it means its revenue is decreasing, while gray cubes represent companies with increasing revenues

Secret Infinity Chaos War? We’ve been here before.

This week I happened to read the reviews before the comics themselves, especially the Twitter based #ramarev reviews, where I happened upon this following comment: – “The set up of Chaos War reads just like the start of Crisis on Infinite Earths from the 80s! Am I right? #RamaRev “ Well, I had been looking forward to the Chaos War since I first heard of it. Of course I did, I love these huge team-ups and it’s about time that one of these cosmic level threats actually hit Earth. With an introduction like that as provided by @cavalock, I was even more excited. I mean, an intro like the Perez/Wolfman classic

TravelTeq’s TRIP Will Pack You, Seat You, Carry You and Rock You

… and it will cost you. Nothing is more tiring than the journey anymore; getting to airports hours early, waiting in long lines, being herded like cattle through security only to find that there are no seats left for your oversold flight at the already over-packed gate … ugh! But the ends justify the means, right? And whether it is for vacation or business, we continue to endure the pitfalls of modern day travel.

Japanese Mobile Web Usage Growing Rapidly

Japanese mobile web usage has grown to outpace that of the United States. It seems that when it comes to being connected on the go, the Japanese have quickly become a leader in that category. According to the findings from a new study by comScore, a staggering three-quarters of all Japanese mobile subscribers accessed the mobile web, apps or other downloaded digital content during the month of June 2010. By comparison in the US, only 43.7% of mobile users did the same – not even close, but still ahead of Europe’s 38.5% Interestingly, Japanese mobile users also displayed “the strongest usage of both applications and browsers” with 59.3% of the entire mobile population accessing their browsers in June and 42.3% accessing applications. Once again, those figures outpace those found among mobile web users in the US

New Study: Body Image Stereotypes Cost Women Money at Work … But Benefit Men

There seems to have been quite a bit of talk and writing about how we should be reinforcing positive body images to young kids, girls in particular. So much talk and focus on how unhealthy it is for girls under 21, who are still changing physically, to be looking for plastic surgery … and also so much focus on the unhealthy sizes of fashion models. There has even been quite a bit of recent focus on the impact of Photoshopping advertisements by companies like Ann Taylor and others. That is all good, so what is the problem

Nokia N8 dismantled by iFixit, praised for design and ease of service

The gang over at iFixit have done the honors of tearing the Nokia N8 to pieces… right down to the screws. There aren’t too many surprises found inside the device, and iFixit gave the handset an 8 out of 10 on their fixability scale (10 being the easiest); they also note the “creative” placement of the antennas and beefy Xenon flash

The Lunacy of eBook Pricing – Example from the Forgotten Realms

Considering I am a huge fan of classic role-playing games, greatly enjoy the whole Dungeons and Dragons universe, have read and enjoyed some of the popular book series from author R. A. Salvatore including the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the Cleric Quintet, and have been intrigued by the recent announcement of the upcoming online-but-not-MMO computer game Neverwinter … you might say I was a ready-made target for the new book Gauntlgrym: Neverwinter Book I.

Concise electronics for geeks

Make: Online fixture Michal Zalewski has built a rep for his incredibly detailed and precise how-tos. Now he has written another, the ultimate how-to for people interested in learning electronics . There are quite a few primers on electronics on the Internet; sadly, almost all of the top hits resort to gross oversimplifications (e.g., hydraulic analogies), or convenient omission, when covering subtle but incredibly important topics such as the real-world behavior of semiconductors

MHealth-Mobile Health, Body Area Networks (BANs)-How to SMS from your vital organs

MHealth, or Mobile Health, is not a new area of mobile development but, since it first gained prominence five years ago, is making some significant strides in being adopted to improve health monitoring around the world. Today, the New Scientist , reported how Dutch research company IMEC demonstrated a new type of Body Area Network (BAN) that allows a heart monitor to send ECG information wirelessly to a patients’ mobile device (so that they can then be forwarded to doctors). You can see a model of a BAN below ( courtesy of Md.Asdaque Hussain and Kyung Sup Kwak ): The interesting development is that the software for the BAN runs on an Android operating system, proof of greater integration between medical sensors and machines and mobile devices.

UAE and RIM resolve differences, BlackBerry service to continue after October 11

Reuters is reporting that the United Arab Emirates and BlackBarry manufacturer Research In Motion have resolved differences that could have potentially left 500,000 BlackBerry subscribers without data services after October 11. “The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has confirmed that Blackberry services are now compliant with the UAE’s telecommunications regulatory framework,” reported WAM, a state run news agency. “All Blackberry services in the UAE will continue to operate as normal and no suspension of service will occur on October 11, 2010,” the news outlet continued. The UAE had threatened to shutter BlackBerry data services due to their inability to access RIM servers through legal means if necessary; BlackBerry data was handled by servers outside of the UAE which created a security and sovereignty nightmare for the Arab state.
