Craig Smith of South Milwaukee, WI, wrote in to share the progress he’s made on his homebrew astronomy rig: Since my moon photo was featured almost a year ago, I have a better telescope, a homemade tracking motor and some ok planetary photos. Saturn is currently on the other side of the sun, but earlier this year I took some shots. Also that brightest ‘star’ in the sky lately is Jupiter.
Flashlights are great for dark environments as along as you’re willing to hold them. Headlamps free up your hands, but require that keep your noggin focused at the task ahead (literally). Lanterns are perfect for brightening up an area, but directing their light is akin to herding cats. But Joby’s Gorillatorch Blade ($60) is one lighting tool that provides nearly all the benefits of the aforementioned devices, minus the hassles. Its CREE LED lamp can output 65 lumens for up to 6.5 hours of use before recharging, or a boost button can crank it up to a whopping 130 lumens of brightness for 2.5 hours.

Doubling Down On That Ass: KFC Advertising Chicken Sandwich On College Coed Rumps
KFC (who knows good marketing ) has just started a campaign in which they pay college girls $500 to wear ‘ Double Down ‘ sweatpants and pass out sandwiches /coupons to horny/obese college students. It’s actually pretty genius if you think about it while you’re hungry and forgive them for using sweatpants instead of yoga pants.
PlainText (Free, or $4.99 for ad-free) and Elements ($4.99) are two iOS note apps I know of that feature Dropbox sync, but for all of those other Dropbox-less apps out there, there’s Habilis . All you do is log into Dropbox, set up a Habilis e-mail, and then e-mail your text from your app of choice right to your unique Habilis account. I should note, however, that this didn’t work in Chrome.
Sony Ericsson’s itty-bitty secondary display for Android phones to cost 69 euros?
At the tail-end of September, Sony Ericsson announced a rather peculiar accessory : the LiveView, an itty-bitty (1.3″), new-iPod-Nano-esque secondary display for their Android phones that could be worn as a watch or clipped onto clothes. While Sony Ericsson was happy to show the thing off and share some of the basic spec details, they kept hush on information like the launch date and pricing. Things like that tend to make their way out one way or another though — and today, it seems they have.

Today during a keynote at CTIA, Ford VP of global product development, Derrick Kuzak, called on mobile app developers to come up with the next set of ideas that can link the car to the Internet through innovation in applications. “We are looking for your ideas,” Kuzak told the audience.
Remember when the Internet was a place where you could come to put a mask on, and say whatever you wanted, however you wanted thanks to anonymity? Those were the golden days. Verizon Wireless will have ‘interactive launch’ of BlackBerry 6 on October 14
Hey, what do we have here? One of our Verizon sources was kind enough to send us this piece of intel regarding Verizon Wireless and BlackBerry 6. It looks like the company plans of having an “interactive launch” of the BlackBerry 6 operating system on Thursday, October 14. The word interactive makes us think that the actual software bits may not be available, however, at minimum, this indicates a BB6 launch is right around the corner. We’ll keep digging and report what we find
The line between phones and computers becomes more blurred with every few months of technology that passes. The original move was the release of the iPhone , and the subsequent smartphone releases that followed. These handsets featured call, mobile email and text capabilities, cameras as per previous phone models, and increased usability such as word processors, applications, and a touchscreen. Connection ports were added so that phones no longer served solely as contact devices, but could be hooked up to other systems and used for entertainment purposes. After a few generations of the smartphone, and in a different part of the technology family, the popularity of the netbook laptop, Apple had a groundbreaking idea to merge the two into a new form of technology – the tablet computer.
Samsung Galaxy Tab may launch on Sprint on November 14th, cost $399
The Samsung Galaxy Tab will launch on Sprint on November 14th, according to one of the Boy Genius ‘ sources. The same person said that the Android-powered tablet will set you back $399 if you opt to sign a new 2-year contract with Sprint, or $599 contract-free. That certainly isn’t a big subsidy, and is nowhere near the great price of free that you can get the Galaxy Tab for in Sweden . $399 is also $100 more than what a Samsung exec had us expect a while ago when he said that the tablet would go for $200-$300 (subsidized)
You might have heard the next gen iPad will include a miniUSB port, but for those looking for an easier interface today, or want a standard USB interface for even the upcoming iPad, you should get the USB connector kit from USB Fever. The kit has a SD and USB connector which talks with the iPad through the female Apple connector you use for synchronizing or connecting to your computer. The kit gives you an easier way to upload images, video and PDF documents. It also gives you an easier way to connect your iPhone or other digital camera or video recorder to your iPad. Hell, you could almost toss out the PC…oh way, you’ve still got to sync and update. T-Mobile responds to complaints from G2 users seeking root
In case you haven’t been keeping up on your HTC G2 news: The recently released Android 2.2, G2 handset from T-Mobile has a built-in security feature that is having an adverse effect on those who are trying to root the device. As T-Mobile explains: The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. As a result the original code is restored. This is good for those users who are not interest in root access; as the chance of a bricked device become slimmer.
