augmented hyper(reality): pop-up ads take over your walls
When I first watched Keiichi Matsuda’s Augmented (hyper)Reality video, I wasn’t sure if I should be awed or frightened by his vision of the world that lies in front of us. Matsuda’s stunning video clip was created as part of his Masters’ program at the Bartlett School of Architecture , and envisions a future in which augmented reality has embedded itself into our everyday lives, transforming the way we interact with our living and working spaces. A wondrous world of heads-up displays show contextual information for everything from dishwasher status, to tea kettle temperature updates, to an inventory of the items in your fridge. Oh yeah, and lots and lots of ads. Click to View Embedded Video Clip I, for one do not want my kitchen walls covered with banner ads – even if they are targeted to my midnight cravings for Krispy Kremes and Grape Tang (unless Kozmo was still in business and could deliver those items in 30 minutes or less.) Ah, the future’s so bright, you’ve gotta hope the AdBlock Plus guys are working on an augmented reality version of their app

Wishes for the Apple iTablet
Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few months, you no doubt know that tomorrow will be a potentially very exciting day for everyone that has been dreaming of an Apple tablet. Our buddy Steve Jobs will be unveiling something new at 10 AM PST at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California. The invites went out last week for the invitation only event, offering only a vague teaser that asked reporters to “Come see our latest creation.” Even with the never ending juggernaut of hype that we’ve all had to put up with, Dave Rees and I have been praying to the gadget gods that tomorrow will FINALLY reveal the iTablet, iSlate, iPad, iWhateverTheHeckItWillBeCalled. We plan to do a dual review as soon as we can each get our hands on one.

LightCap 300 Solar Powered Lantern & Water Bottle
I am going camping this weekend, and I am stoked! To be honest, I am also a bit apprehensive as I have not gone camping since…hmm…since I was a little girl. This trip is just an overnighter and shouldn’t be that much of a shock for this pampered person. Anyhow, roughing it out and being one with Mother Nature is always good from time to time. It would have been perfect if I had one of these water bottles with me. I stumbled upon the LightCap 300 Solar Powered Lantern & Water Bottle at Amazon , and my interest was immediately caught.

Propeller-powered Arcade Machine
MAKE subscriber Jeff writes in to share his latest project, a Propeller powered Arcade Machine . Rather than building a PC-powered MAME cabinet, he decided to base his around a Propeller microcontroller. While it is kind of funny to put such a tiny device in a large cabinet, writing some fun games for the system should be a fun challenge

iPhone app allegedly yanked at competition’s request [iPhone App Store]
Image Source: www.appvault.com Seeing the number of apps in the App Store grow exponentially has been nothing short of fascinating. No one – not even Apple – could have predicted how overwhelmingly successful the store would become. This, then, begs the question: Was Apple ready? We’ve all read the stories, blogs, tweets, and message board posts from angry developers and fans claiming that their favorite app was rejected by Apple for no good reason. While these people could use some perspective – after all, managing a store of over 100 thousand applications is no easy task – it does call into question Apple’s App Store’s approval process. No one is really sure how it works. This latest tale, laid out at AppVault’s blog site , only adds to the intrigue of the mysterious App Store

iTablet Launch Appears Ahead of Apple Event in iPhone Portal
From the screenshot above, it appears that an employee put up a new terms and condition page yesterday, complete with placeholder text, ahead of the Apple event today. This comes after McGraw-Hill’s CEO confirming the device on MSNBC — video after the break. This adds further weight to Flurry Analytics’ claims just days ago that they detected up to 50 different Apple Tablet-like devices testing apps, traced back to the Cupertino HQ of Apple. beep mug: have yourself a hot upc of coffee
Although this mug has got its barcode all around, for some reason it’s called the BEEP Mug. It was created by the British designer Colin O’Dowd and the mug does more than just look cool, it eliminates the need for any excessive packaging, since its own UPC barcode is integrated into the design of the mug. It’s a great idea, though it defeats the purpose if you’re shipping one of these mugs. If you’re just picking one up in a store, I guess it makes more sense.
