Major infrastucture supplier calls it: LTE over WiMAX

If you’re Clearwire or Sprint right now, the last thing you want to hear is one of the world’s major suppliers of wireless infrastructure badmouthing the very technology that underpins your next-gen network — so we imagine there’s some groaning in the hallways and boardrooms of the world’s WiMAX carriers today. Why? Alcatel-Lucent’s COO of its wireless business, Patrick Plas, has pulled no punches in a statement this week that the firm is “not putting a lot of effort into [WiMAX] any longer” after noticing that there’s “a clear direction taken by the industry towards LTE .” Of course, it doesn’t take an analyst to notice that Europe, Asia, and virtually every carrier in the Americas have all taken on a decidedly pro-LTE slant in the past couple years, and these guys are just following the money — which in turn makes it harder (and more expensive) for the handful of WiMAX proponents with deployed networks to build out and stay technologically current

AAXA L1 laser pico-projector: focus-free but madly expensive

Pico-projector company AAXA have outed their latest model , and the L1 carves a niche for itself by using LCoS laser technology rather than the more usual DLP.  The AAXA L1 is capable of projecting up to a 20-lumens 50-inch picture at 800 x 600 resolution, and thanks to the lasers it’s all focus-free: no frustrating focus wheel to twiddle, just point and go.  In fact it can even project clearly onto curved surfaces. There’s also an onboard media player, with support for pictures, video and still images, either stored on the 160MB of internal storage or on a USB drive; AAXA throw a 2GB stick in the box

SIM Cards also come free with a phone/device purchase. Normally SIM cards have a long life, usually in excess of five years, but sometimes they “burn out” or are defective

Symbian OS to become free and completely open source as of today?

Symbian Foundation’s plans to turn Symbian OS into a completely free, open source platform are known for quite a while now – and Wired has it that Symbian is going open source starting today (four months ahead of schedule), as its source code will be made available to anyone, for free. The Symbian Foundation (largely owned by Nokia ) has yet to officially announce this – but it should do it later today. The Symbian OS source code will most probably be available via the Symbian Foundation’s official website . What’s interesting is the declaration of Lee Williams, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, regarding Google’s Android (one of Symbian’s new competitors): “About a third of the Android code base is open and nothing more.

BlackBerry Curve 8900 Ditched by T-Mobile

If you are a fan of the BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone from Research In Motion on the T-Mobile network and haven’t yet got one the chances of actually going to T-Mobile and getting one have just been greatly reduced. The reason being, according to an article over on engadget , T-Mobile has now officially confirmed they are discontinuing the BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone and will no longer offer it. T-Mobile’s answer as to why the discontinuation is that the BlackBerry Curve 8900 has “reached the end of its life cycle,” and well you can get straighter than that can you. Still, even though T-Mobile has decided to ditch the BlackBerry Curve 8900 there are still a few good alternative BlackBerry smartphones to be had such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Curve 8520.

The T410i, T410si and T510i come equipped with the budget-friendly Core i3-330M CPU from Intel, which runs at 2.13GHz, alongside otherwise typical specs. Memory goes from 2GB to 8GB of DDR3, two megapixel webcams come as standard, and fingerprint sensors can be tacked on as well. Even more friendly to businesses on a shoestring is the option for Windows XP pre-installations on the T410i and T510i.

Video: Nexus One Multitouch vs. iPhone 3GS Multitouch

Now that Google has relented over multitouch on the US version of the Nexus One we are seeing a few video demonstrations hit the next waves and today we have one such video from the guys over at intomobile . In this one we have Will Park taking a look at the Nexus One pinch to zoom and apposed to the iPhone 3GS pinch to zoom feature in a sort of multitouch comparison, and Will says now the Nexus One just might take over the iPhone throne. Although multitouch on the Nexus One only works at the moment in the browser, image gallery and Google Maps apps while the iPhone 3GS multitouch works in numerous applications, so my guess even thought the Nexus One now has multitouch it still won’t grab that throne
