Activator: a free and extremely powerful jailbreak app launcher for iPhone [Jailbreak Apps]
The power of Ryan Petrich’s Activator (free on Cydia) dawned on me only this weekend. Activator is used in the excellent Overboard and ProSwitcher apps to launch them with gestures, status bar taps, and hardware button presses. I had heard that these options should soon be applicable to BigBoss’s SBSettings panel, but that hasn’t happened yet. What has happened, though, is even better: you can now choose to launch any of your installed applications using any of the gestures and actions that Activator supports. There are also a number of system shortcuts (respring, reset, turn off, lock, etc.) that you can control as well.

It’s not information overload, it’s filter failure
A bleak struggle with my inbox and the general abundance of articles like this about information overload, reminded me of this talk from web theorist and author of Here Comes Everybody, Clay Shirky.

Ditch your landline for the netTALK TK6000
I’ve wanted to ditch my analog phone for years now, but keep holding on to it due to the fact that I have a T1 line in my home and it’s needed for support reasons. If I didn’t need that line, I’d definitely consider the TK6000 from netTALK . Unlike some VOIP (Voice over IP) products such as the Magic Jack, the netTALK is a one time only purchase of about $100, with no monthly fees. A computer isn’t needed, just plug the module into your broadband router and into a regular landline phone and you’re ready for free local and long distance calls within the US and … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Home Tech , News , Spotlight Gadgets Tagged: VoIP Ditch your landline for the netTALK TK6000 originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on February 1, 2010 at 12:41 pm.

Alcatel OT-980 is like a Palm Pre with Android (video)
Like most of the major and not so major mobile phone makers, Alcatel has embraced Android , too, and its first device to run Google’s OS is the Alcatel OT-980. Design-wise, the Alcatel OT-980 borrows a lot from the Palm Pre , although the current design may be changed, since this is only a prototype – the final version of the handset should be unveiled at MWC 2010

Leapfrog Didj: Handheld Linux on the Cheap
Today our good friends over at Woot! are selling the Leapfrog Didj, a low cost educational toy aimed at little kids. Lucky for hackers out there, the Didj is actually a linux device , and gaining serial console access is as easy as soldering two wires . The documentation out there is a little outdated, with a number of broken links and stale wikis, but $25 for a portable linux device is a hard deal to beat. A list of sites which might be helpful are listed after the break, as well as the hardware specs of the Didj. Let us know if you have played around with hacking the Didj before, and if you have any tips for other readers

Weekend iPhone Spring[board] Cleaning [iPhone Jailbreak]
It’s a little early for spring cleaning but, hey, I was running out of space. I did a hard reset over the weekend and completely wiped out all of my previous settings and all of the local data because I was convinced that something had gone wrong during on of my iTunes syncs. The “other” data was up to 724 MB and my Apps had ballooned to 1.74 GB. I tried to do some basic addition with a calculator based on the numbers that iTunes was giving me, and I should really have had only 800 MB worth of app data on my device (and that was including the 100MB from my local Evernote notebook storage). Something was wrong, and so, in true Canadian fashion, I used a nuclear warhead on my device and started from scratch

When is a Hershey Kiss not a Hershey Kiss?
These kisses from the Hidden Art Shop look like those yummy little chocolate drops, but please don’t try to eat one. They are nifty little holders for CDs that you would otherwise leave laying on your desk. It helps prevent scratching and makes it easier to pick the CD back up. They are definitely more expensive than the sweet candies at £11.50 … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Miscellaneous , News , Spotlight Gadgets Tagged: Desk gadget When is a Hershey Kiss not a Hershey Kiss? originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on February 1, 2010 at 11:45 am

Protecting the enterprise from mobile devices
As often happens with electronics trends, the proliferation of a consumer device soon results in that gadget knocking on the door to the enterprise. That’s the case with smartphones. The trend started with the Blackberry, was supercharged by the iPhone and will continue to grow with phones running Google’s Android operating system. What’s worrisome about these devices is that they run applications… far too many applications that any IT department could vet for security purposes. Jupiter Research, purchased by Forrester research in 2008, estimates that by 2014, 20 billion apps will be downloaded annually to smartphones.

Saddleback Leather Company Mouse Pad Review
To be honest, I have not used a mouse pad in years at either home or work. I walked through my floor at work and found that about one out of 20 were using a mouse pad. With the advent of the laser mouse and the roller ball a thing of the past, mouse pad use is definitely on the decline. I know a few people who still use them to express themselves, but that is about it. Saddleback Leather is bucking that trend and is offering up an extremely well made leather mouse pad that is equal in quality to their other high-end leather products.
