Intel swings 25nm factory doors open for a tour de fab

Intel and Micron’s recent announcement that their collective superhero body, appropriately named IM Flash , is sampling 25nm flash chips has been accompanied with a whirlwind tour of their Utah production facilities for a few lucky journalists. PC Perspective bring us the atmospheric photo above, along with some videos, as they prance about one of the most hallowed (and cleanest) environments known to gadget lovers. Apart from the die shrink, the lads also discuss Intel’s reputed plans for a G3 SSD refresh some time “later this year” with snappier controllers onboard, which apparently was echoed by Micron who also intend to pump out faster processors with their SSD products. While you wait for all that to happen, hit the source link to find out how and where the stuff that gets put inside SSDs is made. JAGTAG 2D Mobile Barcode Technology Live On All 5 Major U.S. Carriers

It seems like 2D barcode technology, mobile tags, as they are commonly referred to, are on the come up here in the United States.  Just the other day we talked about Microsoft Tag .  Today we’ll talk about JAGTAG, who, just announced that their technology is now available on all 5 major carriers in the U.S.  This covers 87% of  users. JAGTAG works a little differently than what we BlackBerry users and smartphone users are used to.  There is no application to install.  Simply take a picture of the JAGTAG and text it to or send it as an email.  It is a bit tedious compared to just snapping a pic on your BlackBerry and being automatically taken to a mobile mobile website.  All the more reason to make your next mobile phone a BlackBerry. Why Don't Mobile Application Stores Require Security Testing?

Restricting the application ecosystem to an application store (as opposed to the widespread nature of software availability on today’s PCs) also helps, but relies on fast removal of malware once it is reported. Call it what you will, …

D&A RX1 Kleer iPod speaker-dock receiver review

Kleer wireless is gradually gaining momentum, and the D&A RX1 fills in another gap in the audio market: cutting the connection between your iPod and your iPod speaker dock without cutting out sound quality. A simple receiver dongle which plugs into an iPod dock and promises CD-quality wireless audio, we slapped the RX1 into our test system to see if this affordable Bluetooth A2DP alternative delivered on its promises. A quick Kleer refresher for those unfamiliar with the technology. An alternative to Bluetooth A2DP, Kleer has a similar 10m range but higher audio quality; think 16-bit 44KHz CD quality rather than the sometimes crunchy sound you get from stereo Bluetooth headphones

Glow-In-The-Dark Basketball Net For Your Midnight Hoop Dreams

By Andrew Liszewski If you have dreams of one day making it big in the NBA/WNBA, you can’t stop playing basketball just because the sun’s gone down… and the streetlights have all burned out… and the moon has disappeared. Not at all! You have to keep practicing until the wee hours of the morning, and the only feasible way you could do that is with this glow-in-the-dark basketball net. After a day in the sun the Nite Hoop will glow for a good 8 hours, so the only thing stopping you from honing your skills all night long is your neighbors getting angry at you for playing basketball at 3 in the morning. $32.98 from Things You Never Knew Existed . Amazon’s stronghold on e-book pricing crumbles, will renegotiate with Macmillan and HarperCollins

Days after Macmillan books disappeared from Amazon’s inventory due to a feud over pricing, Amazon has confirmed that it has caved to Macmillan’s demands and will be raising the prices of Macmillan e-books from $9.99 to $12.99-$14.99 for hardcover and bestselling editions. The online retail giant expressed its strong disagreement with this pricing but decided to still offer the books to customers who can decide with their wallets whether they want to purchase Macmillan e-books at at what it calls “needlessly high prices”. A domino effect is beginning to be seen with News Corp-owned HarperCollins now jumping on the “We want higher pricing” bandwagon

VideoTank HD Flash-Based Video Recorder

By Andrew Liszewski You won’t be able to get your hands on one until June or July, and presumably this mish-mash of a product shot isn’t what the final version will look like, but if you need a rugged, compact, professional-grade H.264 video encoder, the VideoTank HD should suit your needs. At just 3.3 x 3.3 x 1.6 inches in size it’s perfect for field work, with video being captured/saved to swappable compact flash cards, and capacities up to 32GB in size being supported which is enough for 2 hours of 1080i material. There’s a basic LCD display on board for adjusting settings, though the recorder can also be controlled via RS-485 or USB if you happen to have a laptop on hand, and other notable features include a headphone jack, mic inputs and even high-end outputs like HD-SDI, but the most important feature, the price, has yet to be revealed. Large Hadron Collider schedules holiday for 2012, full 7 TeV power for 2013

It’s good to know that even huge inanimate objects appreciate the need for a work-life balance. After a nice winter hiatus , Switzerland’s Large Hadron Collider is coming back online soon, set to resume smashing protonic beams at one another with the force of 3.5 trillion electron-volts (TeV) per beam, or 7 TeV in total. We have to swallow hard when we hear such force described as “low-energy,” but that’s what the LHC designers consider it, and moreover we’re learning they’ll skip past the middle and go for the full 14 TeV potential smashes after a retooling break during 2012
