IBM CityOne Real Life SimCity Planning Game
If your a fan of SimCity but feel its just not life like enough, IBM has just lauched its CityOne software at the IMPACT 2010 conference in Las Vegas today. CityOne is targetted at Urban Planners and Students rather than causal gamers, the IBM City One software aims to help city planners improve the managment of urban environments with real-time water management, microlending, and smartgrids. Check out the video after the jump. IBM has called its CityOne simulation a “serious game” that can help users “discover how to make their cities and their industries smarter by solving real-world business, environmental, and logistical problems.” Cities already consume 75% of the world’s energy and cause 80% of its carbon emissions. And they’re growing at a blistering pace: and the world’s urban population is expected to double by 2050

Game Cube Portable reaffirms our love of console mods [Video]
What is it about mods that turn regular consoles into portable ones that so excites us? Perhaps we’ll never know the answer to that vaguely inconsequential question, so for now let’s just marvel at ModRetro forum member Techknott’s Game Cube Portable . Video demo after the cut The disc reader sits under the LCD display, which hinges up for access, and there are all the usual controls culled from an original Game Cube controller. No word on how long it too nor how much it cost to put together, though. To be fair, it’s apparently not entirely portable, since there’s no battery compartment; instead you have to plug it into an AC adapter

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 due June; mainstream versions shortly after
NVIDIA’s mainstream and entry-level versions of the Fermi -based GeForce GTX 470/480 will arrive in July and August respectively, according to graphics card manufacturers who have been whispering to DigiTimes, with a new GeForce GTX 460 expected to debut in June 2010. The mainstream model will use NVIDIA’s GF106 core and the entry-level will use the GF108; pricing, we’re told, is a little higher than early predictions suggested , coming in at around $180 for the GF106 and $100 for the GF108. Meanwhile the GTX 460 will use the new GF104 Fermi core, a 40nm chip believed to offer up to 256 shader cores, 64 TMUs, 32 ROPs and a 256-bit memory bus. That will be aimed at the mid-market keen on the existing GTX 470/480 cards but dissuaded by their relatively high price tags, and is expected to be priced at around $299. NVIDIA themselves have declined to comment on any of the new products

RIM’s mysterious BlackBerry slider has surfaced again, and this time it’s apparently running BlackBerry OS 6 . Images of the phone sent to BBLeaks show what’s believed to be an early version of the new platform – itself expected to arrive in Q3 2010 – as well as our first glimpse of the phone powered on and even a rumored name: the BlackBerry Slider 9800. Previous rumors have tipped the BlackBerry slider as going by the codenames “T” or Talladega, and having both a touchscreen, an optical trackpad and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for navigation and text input

Microsoft Taking A Risk With Windows Phone 7?
Is Microsoft taking a risk with Windows Phone? Of course! They have to! As far as they have let themselves slip in the last handful of years, they have no choice now but to take big risks. The only thing available to them is copy and paste from other developers until they can get back into the game and then and only then will there be room to breath and develop new and revolutionary ideas to help out the quickly evolving mobile world.

Bill Gates: Microsoft pursuing ‘a lot of’ tablet projects, pen-based input will be ‘mainstream for students’
Few people would’ve taken the news of the Courier’s demise lightly, and while Microsoft sought to comfort us, it’s never quite as reassuring as when you hear it from the progenitor himself: “Microsoft has a lot of different tablet projects that we’re pursuing. We think that work with the pen that Microsoft pioneered will become a mainstream for students.

Samsung Wave S8500 to be launched in North and South America?
Back in February, when Samsung announced the Wave S8500 , it didn’t say where exactly the smartphone would be available. Anyway, we already know that the Wave will be on sale in Europe – and it looks like it might be launched in the Americas, too. The Bluetooth SIG has recently approved the Samsung GT-S8500R and the GT-S8500M , mentioning that both should be available in North America. Moreover, the GT-S8500L is listed as being headed to South America

JooJoo update goes OTA; tablet improved but still buggy
Fusion Garage has confirmed that the promised JooJoo software update has been released OTA to existing owners. Tipped to address UI problems and bring full-screen Flash video playback to the iPad-alternative, the new firmware has also been loaded onto demo JooJoo units Fusion Garage have been toting for their European roll-out; unfortunately, judging by some hands-on impressions with the updated unit, it’s still not perfect. While Flash support is apparently better, the accelerometer remains a frustration; it’s prone to lag or even freezing in one orientation and refusing to change. We’ll have to wait until a full re-review of the hardware to see quite how good a challenge the JooJoo now presents, but ironically it may be what the tablet doesn’t come with that gives it a foot in the door: Fusion Garage reckon that they’ve heard a surprising amount of critique for Apple’s policies – whether their App Store guidelines, or their general restrictions on things like multitasking – which of course works in the JooJoo’s favor. Apple May Change iPhone SDK To Avoid Antitrust Inquiry
Earlier today we told you that Apple [AAPL] may be the subject of an antitrust inquiry after the changed the developer agreement in the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK, which basically stops developers from using third party platforms, like Adobe’s compiler software to create applications for the iPhone and iPad. Now it looks like Apple may have to do some back pedaling to avoid the rumored antitrust inquiry, which it looks like the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are discussing at the moment. Adobe has allegedly complained that the new rules imposed on developers in the latest agreement are anti-competitive, and they may have a good case, because it doesn’t just block Adobe’s third party platform but many others as well. If Apple want to avoid an antitrust inquiry, the easiest way for them to do so is to change the developer agreement to allow third party applications, this would leave Apple with a bit of egg on its face, especially since Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs, publicly slammed Adobe’s Flash last week .
