Confirmed: BlackBerry two-way sync for Gmail is now live
We’ve just heard from the boys and girls at RIM that the company did, in fact, deploy the long-awaited two-way Gmail synchronization capability to North American BIS users this week. What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that if you’ve got a BlackBerry on any North American carrier that isn’t going through BES, Gmail should behave more like it should — deleted items will disappear from your phone, emails read elsewhere will show up as read on the device, and you’ll have access to all of your sent items

Google jumps on the online bookstore bandwagon
Following in the footsteps of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple, Google announced today that the search giant will be launching an online bookstore this summer. The bookstore will launch as Google Editions and will include a Google-managed online storefront as well as an affiliate program that will allow book retailers and independent shops to sell Google Editions’ books on their own website. Google will leverage its current book search service to provide customers with the ability to search and purchase books from the online bookstore. The list of publishers and expected pricing was not revealed but given the current competitive climate, we would expect Google Editions to follow suit with the current offering from Amazon, B&N, and Apple. Depending on the outcome of its settlement with book publishers and authors over the publication rights to out of print books, Google may be able to distinguish themselves from the competition by offering millions of out-of-print books that the search giant has been indexing and compiling for the last several years

Laser Fashion!: The PEW PEW Laser Suit
This is a laser suit created by Wei-Chieh Shih, who may or may not have made the similar looking one Rihanna wore during the American Movie Awards last year. Or maybe Wei-Chieh just stole the idea. Or maybe whoever created the one for Rihanna stole the idea from the guy who made the laser suit for Bono earlier last year. Or maybe everybody stole the idea from whoever made these dresses

Intel demonstrates Light Peak on a laptop, says 10Gbps speeds are only the beginning
Folks in Brussels for Intel’s European research showcase got to get their hands on the company’s Light Peak this week, with the first demonstration of the optical cable technology running on a laptop. Outfitted with a 12mm square chip that converts the optical signal into data the machine can read, two separate HD video streams were piped to a nearby TV, which displayed them with the help of a converter box — a necessary evil until the Light Peak chips are developed for the display side of things. According to Justin Rattner , Intel’s CTO, the current 10Gb / second speeds are just the beginning.

CardStar Saves Loyalty Cards on BlackBerry and Android
CardStar launched an app for iPhone last summer that allowed you to store all of your loyalty card info on your phone, knocking down the girth of your wallet considerably, and now it’s available on Android and BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) handsets. By punching in your membership number, the app generates a barcode that vendors can then scan to get your points/Air Miles/discount/whatever. Extra information, like account information, website, phone number, store locations, and support can also be included from the vendor side – Blockbuster, Best Buy, Delta, PetSmart, and Staples are just some of the chains that have hooked up with CardStar. Participating partners will also occasionally offer coupons and deals to customers who use the app – not a bad incentive at all! It sounds like an extremely useful (and simple) app with plenty of potential

Orientation Lock & iPod Widget Coming To iPhone 4.0?
With the release of the beta 3 of iPhone 4.0 this morning, one of the new major enhancements is the included orientation lock and iPod widget controls. The new controls are accessed via the multi-tasking interface of firmware 4.0 which is done by pushing the home button twice. Now, instead of just closing applications in the multi-tasking pane, users can swipe leftward and see the new iPod controls and orientation lock. The iPod controls include the iPod app icon to access the iPod app, a pause/play button, and fast forward/rewind controls.

Facade Printer Paints Life Size Graffiti
So here is a new twist on the graffiti art, the facade printer. Technically, it’s not used for graffiti in the traditional sense, but rather a new marketing method for a different print medium. Buildings. The facade printer is an inkdot printer which looks like a paint gun mounted on a portable deck

Augmented Reality Used for Public Awareness
In the Netherlands we have a serious problem with people using violence against ambulance workers or fellow citizens. When rescue workers turn up to assist a victim the family and/or friends will threaten them and even use violence. The reason they do this is beyond me as they are preventing them to help the victim

HTC Legend may be launched by AT&T
We’ve previously heard that the HTC Legend would be launched in the US via Sprint , while AT&T would get the HTC Desire . However, it looks like AT&T might get the Legend as well. The FCC has just approved the HTC PB76110, which seems to be the North American version of the European Legend (aka HTC PB76100). The supposed North American Legend features 850 / 1900 MHz 3G bands, which make it a good candidate for a launch via AT&T – or, if we’re talking about Canada, the handset could be released through Rogers, Telus or Bell. According to previous rumors, AT&T should launch the HTC Desire in May or June, so the Legend might be introduced at about the same time (assuming that it’s really coming to AT&T)

Umbro Look to set Record on Foursquare
Foursquare is a mobile service that recently has started to gain a lot of popularity with a certain section of mobile users. You may well have seen various updates from friends on Facebook and Twitter detailing places where they have just ‘checked in’ to. By checking in at various locations you can earn ‘badges’ through the foursquare service; check in more than anyone else and you can become ‘Mayor’ of that location. Whilst these rewards are fun, there are other points with foursquare – by seeing where friends have just checked in to, you will know if they are in the local area to you, so you can catch up with each other

Digital Comics App for the iPhone OS Available Today
I don’t have my iPad yet (maybe for my birthday next month), but one of the things I’m looking forward to is trying out the various comic-reading apps. I’ve tried to read comics on my iPhone, but (as you might expect) it’s simply too small. The big, beautiful iPad screen looks just right for a comic book–a little wider (19cm vs. 17cm for a comic book), and a little shorter (24cm vs. 26cm for a comic book), but definitely ‘way better than an iPad. And I’m no expert, but I’m betting that the resolution of an iPad screen is superior than the rag paper they typically print comic books on. Now in addition to the Marvel app, Madcap studios is releasing on May 4 a free iPhone/iPad app that will provide you with a “ digital comic “. They are currently partnered with Top Cow, Antarctic Press, and artist Joe Phillips. The app includes an in-app book store, automated book walkthrough, and panel-based action animations, among other things. Check it out in iTunes and Madcap’s digital comics site , and remember that the MSRP … [ visit site to read more ] Copyright
iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 is ready for your scrutiny (update: it’s been pulled)
The last time Apple dropped a release of iPhone OS 4.0 , it left more than a few downloaders in crumpled heaps on the floor, sobbing quietly to themselves as they tried desperately to come to terms with the fact that their beloved iPhones were far less usable than they had been just a few minutes prior. Well, we don’t know yet if beta 3 is any better, but it’s here — and if you’re a member of Apple’s iPhone dev program, it’s ready for you to install. So yeah — take care, good luck, godspeed, be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best
