Google Ups the Bug Finders Reward to $3133.7
Only yesterday I wrote about Mozilla increasing their bug finders reward to $3000 , well today Google have followed suit and increased their maximum bug finders reward to $3,133.7o for the most severe bugs researchers find in Chromium. The sudden change in the rewards by Mozilla and Google has been sparked by some bug researchers saying that they were no longer interested in doing the vendors security work without any monetary reward. Prominent bug researchers Alex Sotirov, Charlie Miller and Dino Dai Zovi announced their “no more free bugs” campaign , at the CanSecWest conference back in 2009. Saying vendors shouldn’t expect researchers to freely continue finding serious bugs in their software.

Sharp To Release Already Doomed Ebook Reader
This one just leaves me scratching my head. Sharp has announced that they are planning on entering the ebook reader market in a big way with a new product…but which will likely only read an obscure propiratary format only used currently in Japan. The reader is intended for release first in Japan, but Sharp is then planning on bringing it to the US and is in talks with Verizon about it.

Sony Patents Multiplayer Stereoscopic System
With 3D finally starting to break through in mainstream devices, Sony is looking to protect one of their developments that sends two images from one video screen to two different people. Patents recently published show that Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. the PlayStation division of Sony, is looking to systems that will allow to players to share separate images from one screen, rather than playing in a split screen mode. An example maybe if two people were playing a FPS on one screen, the norm would be to use a split screen, Sony’s Multiplayer Stereoscopic System would allow each player to see only their own characters views on the screen

EKING multitouch MID gets render outing
It’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep out of EKING, but the company is back with a new UMPC/MID, at least in render form . Currently unnamed, the Atom based ultraportable is expected to have a 5-inch 1024 x 600 multitouch-capable display (sourced from Sharp), WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and GPS. The display slides and tilts away to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, but there are plenty of bezel controls for using it while closed. Despite the Windows XP screenshots it’s tipped to run Windows 7, and there’s at front-facing webcam for video calls and talk of a rear-facing camera for photography.

Nokia N97 mini gets Apple “antennagate” testing
Nokia may rue the day they jumped on the Antennagate bandwagon and pointed out that they’d always prioritize signal performance over aesthetics . The company’s N97 mini has joined the BlackBerry Bold 9700, Samsung Omnia II, HTC Droid Eris and iPhone 3GS on Apple’s antenna testing page of shame. In the same attenuation tests, the N97 mini dropped from seven bars down to two when Apple’s testers gripped it around its antenna. That’s on AT&T’s network, though it’s not clear what the end result of those dropped bars actually is; as we’ve seen in other testing, just because you only have a few bars, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll not be able to make a call. Adobe Brings FlashTime Video Calls To Android
With Apple still not allowing Adobe’s Air and Flash platforms to run on their iOS4 devices, Adobe has sent a sucker punch to Apple by releasing FlashTime a video calling feature for Android mobile devices. FlashTime is designed for the Android mobile operating system and built around Adobe Air 2.5. It offers similar features to Apple’s FaceTime application and allows you to make video calls using front facing Android devices with cameras. The new Adobe software is not expected to keep the name FlashTime once its released in to the main stream and a few features shown in this beta version may not make it to the final release.

Panasonic adds Blu-ray 3D/HDD all-in-one plasmas; redesigned, rechargeable 3D glasses in Japan
Panasonic Japan’s push to bring 3D to wider audiences means more than just offering it in smaller HDTVs . The RT2B series plasmas announced today can record TV broadcasts onto their hard discs or Blu-ray drives, and are the first all-in-ones that play Blu-ray 3D movies as well. Available in 42- and 46-inch versions, it’s unlikely we’ll see them on this side of the Pacific, but much more likely to make the jump are some new 3D glasses (pictures after the break.) Now available in different sizes for the whole family, they also include sealed batteries rechargeable by USB, as opposed to the current one-size-fits-all design that relies on a replaceable watch battery. Two hours charging via USB should equal 30 hours of watching, and at 38g, Panasonic’s claiming the small kid-sized TY-EW3D2SW active shutter glasses are the lightest around.

Apple: After the Storm
A great deal of news about Apple today. Of course first and foremost the internet is buzzing about today’s earnings announcement, in which Apple breaks all records with a nearly 90 percent increase in revenues from this quarter last year. More than 3 million iPads sold in the quarter, more than 8 million iPhones…the numbers are dazzling. Apple knows that…and will be telling us so every chance it gets. Of course these numbers are not totally unexpected.

Rural Cellular Association to the FCC: Follow NTT DoCoMo and unlock US handsets
Long the champion for Rural wireless carriers, the Rural Cellular Association has again championed the cause of unlocking handsets by pointing to the recent “ We’re going SIM-Free ” announcement by NTT DoCoMo. The Rural Cellular association took its case to the FCC in a letter that praises NTT DoCoMo’s pro-consumer decision to unlock its handsets and urges the FCC to encourage US-based wireless carriers to take similar steps. The RCA has been pushing this initiative for over two years to no avail; with the FCC a year into its investigation of carrier exclusivity and its effect on consumer choice in the US, perhaps the time is now for this proposal to fall on some non-deaf ears?

T-Mobile USA HSPA+ network overtakes rivals with 4G speed reach
“You snooze, you lose” may not be the most eloquent way of putting it, but Sprint CEO Dan Hesse knows that the longer it takes to get customers onto shiny devices like the EVO 4G , the more chance his carrier rivals have to overtake him in high-speed mobile networks. T-Mobile USA has just announced that their HSPA+ network is now the most pervasive in the country, currently covering more than 85m people and on track, the carrier promises, to offer HSPA+ to over 185m people by the end of 2010.

Turn your Apple iDevice Into a Universal Remote with the RedEye Mini
As Joel Evans from the Mobile Gadgeteer explains, “when it comes to Apple and its proprietary dock connector, many developers have been left out in the cold when it comes to wanting to create the perfect add-on for the iPhone or iPod touch.” But of course, no enterprising inventor is going to let a proprietary dock get in their way when there is another perfectly good non-proprietary dock available on every Apple iPod, touch, iPhone and iPad. Hello RedEye Mini … the headphone jack! Ahhhhhh! So what’s a RedEye Mini?

Droid 2 and Android 2.2 fated to be together from the start, according to latest leaks
You know, some people get married with less information about their partner than we already have about the Droid 2 . Today, we have a pair of independent leaks seemingly confirming that the second coming of Moto’s QWERTY-sportin’ Doer will be running Android 2.2 right out of the gate. Droid Life has a tipster that’s apparently spent some quality time with the device, describing its keyboard as “phenomenal” and pointing out that it feels notably snappier than the original . The Froyo connection is reiterated by Phandroid ‘s sources, which provide images of Verizon’s device database indicating once again that Android 2.2 and Droid 2 will be an appropriately matched pair when the launch codes get entered (last mooted for August 12 ) and this thing finally hits retail.
