iPhone app review: GoodReader

One of the things I’ve always wanted to do with my smartphone — whether it was my original Palm Treo 650, or my current iPhone — was to read books while on-the-go. Unfortunately, the screens on these smartphones have all been way too small to make reading comfortable for anything more than a screenful or two. Even reading long email messages can be a strain on my eyes.

wtf is up with ipad digital magazine prices?

I can certainly understand that the print publishing industry is taking a beating with the poor economy, and many marketers moving ad buys online. I get that the print industry needs to sell issues to stay afloat. What I don’t get is the rationale behind charging more for a cheaper-to-produce digital edition of the publication than the print version costs.

Apple iPad Reaches ‘One Million Sold’ Twice as Fast as iPhone

Apple announced on Monday that it has sold over one million iPad devices over the internet and in its retail outlets, following the Friday release of the 3G version of the device, which can connect to the internet via cellular data networks in addition to WiFi. Naysayers who jokingly derided the device as a large iPhone with no phone function have been proven wrong about people not wanting exactly that — a testament to the powerful allure of these devices, which sit in a new category of computing somewhere between the smartphone and the netbook. “One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Demand continues to exceed supply,” he claimed, “and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.” This 28-day figure doesn’t seem quite as impressive if you correlate the 3G iPad to the iPhone, and the WiFi-only iPad to the WiFi-only iPod Touch, because the iPhone and iPod Touch reached the combined one million mark about as fast as the iPads did. In addition, Apple said it shipped 500,000 units of the WiFi-only iPad within the first week, so sales have slowed since then, relatively speaking, even with Friday’s introduction of the 3G model.

Deutsche Telecom AG says it’s still committed to T-Mobile USA

Today Deutsche Telecom AG’s CEO Rene Obermann said during its annual shareholder meeting that Deutsche Telecom AG is still committed to T-Mobile USA. And despite admitting that he’s not been “fully satisfied,” with the company’s performance in the U.S., he said that “it is making us a great deal of money.” In February rumors surfaced that Deutsche Telecom could be shopping for a buyer for T-Mobile USA, or may be preparing an IPO, but then in March the company said it had no plans to sell the carrier. 1 Million iPads Sold In April

Between Friday, April 3rd, and Friday, April 30th – the release dates of Apple’s WiFi iPad and the iPad 3G, respectively – the Cupertino-based tech giant successfully logged better than one million units sold of the revolutionary tablet computer. Over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated that some 300,000 iPad 3G units had been sold since Friday’s nationwide release. “Near-term, this may put downward pressure on launch day/weekend statistics, but long-term we see it as a positive, as consumers are definitely interested in the iPad as a new category,” wrote Munster.

Smartphone Shipments Jump 50% During Q1

People want smartphones, as evident by a new report indicating global smartphone shipments totaled an estimated 54M units during Q1 2010, growing 50% from Q1 2009 when 36M units were shipped. The report, published by Strategy Analytics under the name “Global Smartphone Market Share Update,” also indicates Nokia shipped a record 21.5 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2010, rising an above-average 57% from 13.7 million units a year earlier. According to the report, RIM shipped 10.6 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2010-  beating Apple’s record 8.8 million units during the quarter, and positioning itself as the largest mobile device vendor of North American origin, ahead of rivals Apple and Motorola.  RIM’s annual growth rate slowed to just 45 percent in Q1 2010, however, and its new Blackberry OS 6.0 upgrade due in Q3 2010 is badly needed. Smartphones now account for 18% of total handset shipments, with sales being driven largely by healthy operator subsidies, vigorous competition between vendors and a growing tide of lower-cost models using operating software like Symbian and Android, the report suggests

DOJ and/or FTC may launch antitrust inquiry against Apple for developer policies

The New York Post is reporting that the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are, “locked in negotiations over which of the watchdogs will begin an antitrust inquiry into Apple’s new policy of requiring software developers who devise applications for devices such as the iPhone and iPad to use only Apple’s programming tools.” The Post, claiming to have “sources familiar with the matter,” goes on to say that the two government agencies, “are days away from making a decision about which agency will launch the inquiry.” The Post speculates that the inquiry is a byproduct of Apple’s hard-line on Flash, however, 9 to 5 Mac speculates (probably more accurately) that the inquiry is driven by Apple’s recent ban on third-party “rapid app development tools” and restrictions on “unauthorized programming code” as mandated by the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement . Whatever the reasoning, it looks like Apple’s General Council will continue to earn their keep. What do you think? Should Apple have the right to exert totalitarian control over their development ecosystem… or, should they play nice and let others join in the fun
