Apple Flash Light iPhone App With Hidden Tethering Feature
Nick Lee’s Flash Light iPhone application called Handy Light, looked like any other simple torch app on the iTunes store. But lurking behind the scenes in its code was a camouflaged tethering feature. The hidden tethering code used the SOCKS proxy similar to that of the Netshare tethering application that was finally removed from the iTunes app store after a few intermittent appearances

In other words, if you want a new Nexus One then you need to make a purchase sooner as opposed to later. That said, at that time all we knew was that Google had received its last shipment, but more recently; “A Google spokeswoman told The Times on Tuesday that the Mountain View, Calif., company expects to sell out of its remaining supply by the end of the month but wouldn’t say how many units it received.” Read [ LA Times ] Full Story
HTC Quietly releases update for HTC Touch Diamond2.
HTC never post much details about the updates on their website. All I know is that the update affects SMS and “amends the internal management of SMS functionality, and enhances SMS transmission stability” It’s pretty vague. Anyway, the update applies to ROM versions between 2.51.xxx.x to 2.54.xxx.x Download the update on HTC’s Support site .

Froyo roundup: DROID 2 to launch with Android 2.2; updates for Galaxy S and Vodafone Nexus One dated
Lashings of Froyo rumor over the past twenty-four hours, with talk of Android 2.2 headed to various high-end handsets. First off, spyshots have tipped the Motorola DROID 2 as launching on Verizon with Froyo preloaded according to Droid-Life, rather than the Android 2.1 OS we’ve seen on the DROID X , while elsewhere there’s talk of Android 2.2 updates for existing devices. That includes a Froyo update for the Vodafone Google Nexus One as early as next week , with the carrier-branded device finally getting what unlocked users have been enjoying for a few weeks now. Handy, since Google has announced that they’ll soon not be offering the unlocked version themselves , leaving it up to carrier partners to supply the phone.

Apple iPhone 4 Bumper Giveaway to Cost $175 Million
How much is the price for a good reputation for a company? Well in order to keep customers happy over the iPhone 4 antennagate issue, Apple has promised to give a free bumper case to every iPhone 4 customer through till September’s end, which is obviously going to cost Apple a pretty penny. According to an article over on Ubergizmo , in keeping iPhone 4 customers happy by doing a bumper case giveaway, Apple has announced it will cost them a cool $175 million to do so. Having said that, when you consider a analysts estimated cost of a full iPhone 4 recall being around $1.5 billion, although the actual figure for a full scale recall isn’t confirmed, $175 million doesn’t seem that bad at all for allying the wrath of the iPhone user. Of course Apple stock holders won’t be too pleased with that $175 million figure, but like I said what acceptable price can you put on a company’s reputation for being fair to its customers

FCC approves Apple’s new invention – Magic Trackpad/Magic Slate
Engadget discovered this strange gadget sometime back and connected the dots somehow – This new Magic Trackpad/Magic Slate has long been rumored to be a large, flat surface with iPhone/iPad-like capacitive multitouch input to the Mac. Possibly supporting the full range of gestures that the iPhone and iPad currently support. Apple generally keeps all of their device filings with the FCC locked down and with this filing being released there is great possibility we may see this new device hit the stores later this week. The FCC test report also talks about the device as a “Bluetooth Trackpad”. The ultra-rough label location diagram is definitely the right shape for the accessory, and what’s interesting is that the test report was completed way back in October of 2009. Has Apple seriously been sitting on this thing for the better part of a year

Gaikai cloud-gaming service gets Intel cash to put Mass Effect in your browser
Looks like OnLive could have some competition in the form of Gaikai , another cloud-computing service that promises performance gaming without a console. Unlike OnLive, which uses a standalone box, Gaikai streams games directly into your browser; we’ve already seen it streaming WoW to Apple’s iPad

Motorola Droid 2 Comes with Android 2.2 Confirmed
When the latest Droid device is launched on Verizon Wireless, namely the Motorola Droid 2 , the device was rumoured to pack the latest Android operating system from Google, Android 2.2 Froyo, well apparently the rumours were right. According to an article over on Droid-Life , the guys over at Phandroid have managed to get hold of a couple of Verizon device database screenshots which seem to confirm that the Motorola Droid 2 will indeed come with Android 2.2 Froyo. Unfortunately though the screen captures don’t confirm anything else in the way of Motorola Droid 2 specifications that have been floating round the net waves recently, but do indeed show that Android 2.2 Froyo will be playing nice on the Droid 2 on release. And as reported earlier the expected launch of the Motorola Droid 2 is now August 12th , so are any of our readers going to grab the Droid 2 on launch

Brother AiRScouter AR retina scanning display demonstrated
Brother has been showing off its latest head-mounted display , and while the Brother AiRScouter can’t exactly be described as discreet, if you could put up with the confused glances the functionality could be pretty handy. The AiRScouter uses a retinal scanning display, which basically projects a virtual image directly onto the retina. The idea is, you wear the AiRScouter and have a dynamic projected screen constantly in your vision at all times

Verizon “Entourage” ereader duo due September
Here’s an odd one. Verizon are already tipped to be offering at least one 10.1-inch tablet later in 2010, and are name-checked as the potential carrier of choice for Sharp’s upcoming duo of LCD ebook readers , but according to Engadget ‘s sources the roadmap has two devices billed as “ereaders” on the roadmap for September that are labelled as “Entourage”. That’s got them speculating that the devices may be from the same Entourage that produces the dual-screen eDGe ereader . Unsurprisingly technical specifications aren’t exactly flooding the roadmap, so beyond the two devices having 7- and 10-inch displays there’s no indication of hardware.

ARM and TSMC team up for tinier 20nm Cortex SOCs
It’s no secret that ARM ideas are powering much of the mobile revolution these days, but the company doesn’t print its own systems-on-a-chip, that duty gets outsourced to silicon foundries — like TSMC , who just got all buddy-buddy with the firm to transition future smartphone chips to the 28nm and obscenely tiny 20nm high-k metal gate processes. (We’re not sure what this means for GlobalFoundries, who had a similar deal earlier this year.) As per usual with a die size reduction, ARM chips will see higher speed and have decreased power consumption, but since 20nm is (relatively) unexplored territory it could be years before chips hit the market
