Eyesight allows your phone to be controlled with hand gestures

What you are seeing here in this video is Eyesight, a natural user interface that allows gesture-based recognition commands. For example, a wave of the hand in front of the phone can answer an incoming call, browse through photos, or change tracks on an MP3 player. It can even be used for GPS navigation software

Nintendo DSi XL in Midnight Blue Coming to the US on July 11th

We’re scratching our heads at this one. It’s only been a week since Nintendo announced that there would be new colors coming to the DSi XL line-up, and while that was all well and good, there wasn’t any announcement saying that the new shades would be seeing release anywhere else other than Japan. And then Nintendo sneaks this one in: Midnight Blue is coming to the States. Everyone, including Nintendo, knows that the Nintendo DSi XL isn’t doing all that well

Ford, GM ‘turn’ to Google Maps

(Image courtesy Google) Detroit automakers Ford and GM both announced this week the coming availability of turn-by-turn directions in their vehicles courtesy of Google Maps. Ford will offer this convenience via SYNC technology (using the customers mobile phone) and GMs will arrive a la OnStar. Unfortunately this means the technology is only good so long as a cell signal remains. For those who find themselves EXTREMELY lost, I suggest making sure you bring along a boy scout or homing pigeon before leaving the connected realm. For me, I will continue to trust the latest satellite-based GPS navigation technology offered in most of the new vehicles and handheld devices on the market today

I’m On To You, Phillip Morris!: LEGO Smokes

In big tobacco’s attempt to appeal to our (well, your) children without the use of a hip, anthropomorphic camel with a shlong the size of a fire hose, here’s some LEGO cigarettes . Impressive, but could you imagine actually smoking those? I can, but only because I used to huff Lincoln Logs. AND snort pogs

PlayStation Network down for ‘regularly scheduled maintenance’ — RDR posses take the day off

Wondering why your murderous, alcohol-fueled rampage across the old Southwest has been interrupted? The PlayStation Network is taking a personal day for maintenance (it happens sometimes, even on services we pay for , so insert PSN+ rumors here ) from 8 a.m. (PST) to 8:30 p.m. Turning on your PS3 for some Red Dead Redemption or other gaming in the interim displays the above message so for now, all of your Home friends will have to wait. In the meantime, Netflix streaming is still a go so queue up 3:10 to Yuma (the original version, of course) and give that tired horse a break

AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee

We’re just two days away from the launch of the first 3D channel in the US, and U-verse will be ready. The third broadcaster to announce it will carry ESPN 3D after DirecTV and Comcast , it is the first to charge an additional fee for the privilege. $10 per month adds the “3D Technology Package” to your U-verse viewing options — similar to Comcast and different from DirecTV’s approach , it works with all the boxes but will require users to manually switch to 3D mode on their TVs — which at the moment will consist only of ESPN 3D, although the company promises its goal is to offer a “wide range” of 3D content just like its current HD lineup (which it also charges an extra $10 to access.) Have U-verse but haven’t shelled out for a 3DTV, glasses, and this new channel

If you work full time from a notebook computer, you have to make a few concessions for portability. That’s doesn’t mean that you can’t work comfortably though so many notebook users end up looking for a better external keyboard, speakers, and a mouse to make things easier. Many notebook users also get notebook risers to elevate the screen of their notebook to more comfortable levels. SMK has announced a new device that does most everything a notebook user wants with one gadget. The Notebook USB Audio Station (PDF) raises the screen of the notebook 26-degrees for visibility.

AdMob Founder Omar Hamoui Responds To Apple’s Updated iPhone Developer Terms

It was only a matter of time before AdMob and others in the mobile advertising game responded to Apple’s updated developer terms which effectively prohibit app developers from using third-parties such as AdMob and Google’s advertising solutions on the iPhone. The new terms have left many in the industry scratching their head as to why Apple would make such a blatant anti-competitive move, and the responses are starting to come forward.

T-Mobile adds to Iphone 4 mystery

MYSTERY SURROUNDS the 24 June launch of the Iphone 4 in the UK and T-Mobile’s announcement that it will offer Apple’s latest shiny toy fails to dispel it. O2, Orange and Vodafone have announced they will offer the smaller version of the Ipad with mobile phone functions from 24 June but have not given any contract details despite the big date being but 15 days away. And T-Mobile has simply said in a statement that details of prices and tariffs will be announced “in due course”. Clearly the hard sell approach. “T-Mobile UK will launch iPhone 4…in the coming weeks,” the company said with much enthusiasm.

Flux Thursday in NYC

If you’re into DIY in NYC, I wouldn’t miss Flux Thursday tomorrow: Flux Thursday is a monthly dinner, potluck and salon held at Flux Factory, your and my favorite artist collective in Queens, NYC. The June 2010 installment is kind of special, because it will also include an awards ceremony for Flux’s current exhibition, The Science Fair, which features interactive experiments and presentation booths by artist-scientists and scientist-artists. Participants include Robin Brehm, Daupo, Lisa Glauer & Kaethe Wenzel, Fred Forest, Samwell Freeman, Hope Ginsburg & Colablablab, Kate Hartman, Jay Henderson, Jaime Iglehart, Scott Kildall, Rafael Hidalgo Múgica, Julia Oldham, James Rouvelle & Lili Maya, SP Weather Station and Daniel Robie, Chad Stayrook, Studio AND, Flint Weisser, Elizabeth Whalley, Daniel Schludi, and Jing Yu. And that’s not all! The evening will also include two special salon presentations: Scientists Are The New Rock Stars, a performance by Scott Bieben; and The World’s Longest DIY Slideshow, a roller coaster presentation of over 300 images by Nick Normal from his recent trip to the Bay Area for Maker Faire – which is coming to NYC later this year, so Nick’s slideshow will serve to both answer questions about how the Faire operates, and also to catalyze Makers in NY with inspiration! Panasonic Toughbook F9: lightest 14-inch notebook & rugged too

Panasonic have outed their latest rugged notebook , the Toughbook F9, a 14-inch machine that weighs a mere 3.6 pounds; that makes it the industry’s lightest 14-inch notebook, despite the extra-sturdy build.  Based around a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M processor with a 320GB hard-drive and optional Qualcomm Gobi WWAN, the F9 boasts up to seven hours runtime. That’s impressive, considering the Toughbook F9 can withstand a drop of 30-inches – about the height of your desk – while turned on and without losing data.  There’s also a spill-resistant keyboard, and the casing is made of sturdy magnesium alloy
