Video: Samsung’s new unbreakable AMOLED screen vs hammer.
It doesn’t take much to break a phone screen. I know plenty of people — and I’m sure you do, too — with the tell-tale mark of a dropped phone dividing their screens into so many pieces of shame. Samsung feel your pain, fear, and shame, and want to do something to help you out. Samsung have created an “unbreakable” AMOLED (the source suggests that it isn’t of the “super” variety, unfortunately) invinci-screen that should be in mass production by 2012. I’m sure you hear “unbreakable” bandied about all the time, so I think you should watch the demonstration video where they put the screen up against a hammer.
Motorola i1 Android Smartphone Lands On Sprint 25th Of July
Some of our readers will remember the Motorola i1 Android smartphone that was announced back in March of this year, Sprint has announced that the Motorola i1 will be available for $150 on a two year contract from the 25th of July 2010. The Motorola i1 features a 3.1 inch capacitive touchscreen HVGA display, and the screen is designed to protect the phone from dust and dirt, and it will come with Google Android 1.5. The Motorola i1 is designed to me a rugged smartphone and it confirms to military 810F standards, which means it should be safe from shocks, water and dust.
It seems like launch hiccups are going to be part of the bargain with all these new superphone launches. With all that cutting-edge technology packed in there, you can expect a few issues — like faulty USB controllers or wet glue — and in the Droid X’s case, some display problems. Yes, there are a few reports of that big ol’ display not functioning correctly. It’s far from an epidemic. But if you’re having problems, it always helps to know you’re not the only one.
sony 360-degree volumetric display: the stuff sci-fi dreams are made of
Sony just introduced a video demonstrating this amazing new 360-degree display technology that’s something you might find in a James Cameron movie. The new autostereoscopic display projects 360 individual slices of an image onto an array of special LEDs, providing a volumetric display you can walk around and view from any angle – without glasses. It can even recognize gestures, allowing you to manipulate the object displayed on screen
RIM Bolsters Blackberry API To Allow Cell Tower Location In Addition To GPS
As you likely already know, it’s all about location in the mobile world these days. GPS is the primary driver in determining one’s location, but it doesn’t always prove reliable inside buildings or areas without a clear and unobstructed view of the sky.
Google’s Nexus One phone, touted as a “super” phone by Google and a key iPhone competitor when it launched in January, is now history in the United States. The search giant said it will no longer sell the phone via its website once existing stock is depleted. “Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google,” the company said on its blog
MyJobChart Web Site Review: A Fun Way To Track Kids’ Chores
Anyone who is a parent knows the struggle of keeping your wonderful kiddos on top of their chores. As the father of two young and arguably crazy boys, it seems that we could spend the entire day cleaning up their messes. There are many strategies to getting the younglings to take care of their chores and I think I have tried them all. The problem in my house is not getting the kids to help out but more of them cleaning up then dragging out a different room full of toys five minutes later. They seem to not mind helping out most of the time but keeping them focused on the big picture is difficult at best. Today’s kids are growing up in a different age than most of us did. Technology is something they know as the norm in the world. They use it as the only thing they know. When I found MyJobChart, it seemed to be the perfect solution to get my kids actively engaged in their daily chores. MyJobChart allows for parents to set up a web site with a list of jobs for their kids with assignable point values. As the kids earn points, they have their own rewards store where they trade points for items chosen by the parents. The screen shot above shows the login screen. Each member of the family has their own password and avatars are used so it is easy to tell the accounts apart. My kids are obviously too young to log in themselves, but we sit down each evening and add the points for the day. The parent accounts are different from the kids and this is where the jobs are assigned and points and rewards are chosen. Setting up each child’s account is quick and easy. Click on the child’s name and assign their jobs. The dashboard will allow you to easily manage any part of the website from users to jobs to rewards
While Sprint may be rocking 4G right now, and T-Mobile’s talking about their super-fast speeds, there’s still quite a few (and that’s an understatement) folks out there eagerly anticipating the moment they can access Verizon’s 4G network. Better known as LTE (Long Term Evolution), the largest wireless carrier in the United States is all set to launch the service by the end of 2010, with more handsets ready to take part in the faster-data speeds by early 2011.
Sprint has announced that the Motorola i1 will be available for purchase on July 25 through direct ship sales channels, and will hit retail outlets in early August. As you may recall, the i1 is the first Android-powered smartphone to include Nextel Direct Connect technology and sports a hardened body that meets military specs for shock, dust, and rain. $149 (after $50 rebate) for new customers and eligible upgrades with the standard two year contract. Here’s the complete press release .

I’ve certainly seen our share of low-cost computers , but I can honestly say that this is the least expensive computer system I’ve seen yet. The Humane Reader is designed to provide computer technology to homes or schools without internet access or the budget for traditional PCs or Macs. The 8-bit computer can turn any television into an e-Book/Wikipedia reader. As a matter of fact, its makers say you could store 5,000 books or more on a single 2GB SD card (included in the $20 cost). The creators of the Humane Reader state their value proposition simply: “The Humane Reader can provide a virtual library to any developing world school or individual with electrical power for less than the cost of a single textbook.” Based on the Atmega328p microcontroller (there are actually three of them in there), the open source Humane Reader can be loaded up with educational content via USB, and it can display output on any video display with composite input.

The new Echo Smartpen improves on the previous generation of Livescribe products with a sleek ergonomic design that features a rubberized grip and anti-roll surface, it’s also available with the biggest capacity ever – 8GB! Livescribe has also made charging the device more convenient, with a micro-USB connector, and the Echo now has a 3.5mm audio jack so that users can use whatever headphones they’d like with it. But I’ll be honest, I had my doubts about a pen that needs to be charged. But, Wow.

There has been a ton of buzz, rumours and speculation around Apple’s latest product, the iPhone 4. Started when an Apple employee left one in a bar long before its release date, which then ended up in the tech media’s hands and published online with full specifications. Then came the Adobe Flash battle , followed by reports that Apple’s product manufacturer, Foxconn , was faced mass employees suicides

After all the Motorola and HTC Droid phones, Verizon launched the Motorola Devour, and Android messaging phone. We picked up a Devour to give you a look at the device, which certainly isn’t aimed at the high-end smartphone crowd. However, since the Sidekick has pretty much fell off the face of the earth, we thought the Devour would be attractive to that younger crowd that’s into text messaging but doesn’t need an overly expensive data plan.
On the threshold of the publication of the 2010 edition of Gartner’s annual CIO Survey, where 1600 of CIOs were asked about their plans and priorities for the year, Mark McDonald, GVP of Gartner Executive Programs, shared some of its findings. According to the survey, 2010 will be a time of transition from recession to recovery economically, strategically from a focus on efficiency to productivity, and technically speaking from heavyweight to lightweight technologies. But all the while IT budgets will remain tight. Only 6% of the polled CIOs see actual real growth coming in 2010. Leading CIOs are inventing new rules for the new economy with the focus on productivity, collaboration, and innovation.
When a phone is out of battery, it takes long time to get the phone fully charged. The new kind of battery – Graphene Battries is developed to solve this problem by cutting down charging time from 2 hours to about 10 minutes. The new graphene-based electrode fabrication process in cooperation with Princeton researcher Ilhan Aksay under a cooperative research and development agreement with Vorbec, also developed by researchers at the Energy Department’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has been licensed to Vorbeck Materials Corp.
