Apple is world’s second largest company by market cap

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Apple was in danger of going out of business yet now they are the world’s second largest company (in terms of market cap) and not too far away from snatching the No.1 position held by Exxon. Apple, maker of the Mac, the iPod, iPhone and iPad, surpassed Chinese oil giant PetroChina during trading on Thursday to become the world’s second-largest company in terms of market value. Apple shares hit a record 292.76 dollars during trading on Wall Street, giving the California gadget-maker a market capitalization of 266 billion dollars, more than PetroChina’s 265 billion dollars.

The Nearshoring Choice of European Businesses

During one of the latest Global Services’ webinars, Avinash Vashistha, CEO and Chairman Tholons, noted: “Western Europe has done a significant amount of nearshoring to Eastern European countries which have become a part of European Union.” But what makes EE/CEE locations so attractive for Western clients? Why, unlike their American counterparts, European businesses prefer to keep their IT initiatives close to home? Why such popular offshore destinations like India and China are losing ground? According to Tholons and Global Services’ joint study, the first reason for Europe’s neashoring success lies in the conservative nature of Europeans who are comfortable to keep work close to home and do not have a settled tradition of sending work overseas

Nokia Push And Burton – Pushing The Boundaries

Those of you who have your eyes and ears aimed the right direction will be familiar with the PushN900 stuff that happened previously. I covered one of the showcases which involved pole dancing robots, Kryten from Red Dwarf and the winners of the PushN900 hack competition (not in that particular order, nor with any nsfw activities either). Two of the winners, were my favourite – the Solderin Skaters and Kaping With the N900 videos below show what has been achieved by those hacks. Very impressive stuff

Securing Email Part Two-Server to Server

Welcome to part two in a series on securing email. In part one  we introduced the challenge, and three influences; compliance, technology, and support. In this post, we’re going to look at two of the prevailing methods for securing email exchanges between servers… the way two businesses might wish to secure the email exchanges between them to prevent eavesdropping or interception on the Internet. We’ll look at SMTP/TLS and at routing SMTP over a VPN connection, and look at the pros and cons of each method. NFL Games: Worst Traffic Jams DC, New England, Buffalo

TomTom took a look into their database crystal ball and saw that yes, there are traffic jams at NFL games, and then there are traffic disasters. The worst locations experience a 50+% slowdown in traffic as a result of the games. I can vouch for that as we live close to Gillette Stadium, and you don’t want to go near the place on game day if you aren’t going to the game. “The results of this study were calculated using data from the TomTom user community. TomTom compared anonymously contributed GPS measurements and data during the home games for each stadium for the 2009 season with data from TomTom’s historical speed database, Speed Profiles(TM)
