With the iPad, Apple just jumped the shark

Everything was going great at Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ), until today. The Macs are selling because Vista was a terrible operating system, and while Windows 7 is better, it’s still not considered “cool” to own an HP, Dell or Acer computer.

The iPad Has Landed!

In 1991, Apple introduced the first laptop. 20 years later, Steve Jobs brings us the iPad to bridge the gap between the MacBook and iPhone. Just like the iPhone, the iPad lets you browse the Internet, use the touchscreen to flick through your photos, get directions via maps, and access the iTunes Store to buy apps, and watch movies and TV shows in landscape mode. Using the touchscreen keyboard, you can send emails, chat, and use the iPad like a regular computer. Hear the first details, and see more images when you read more

weblogs co-founder leaks apple tablet features

Softpedia ’s Filip Truta stumbled upon a gold mine of Apple Tablet info, the gold mine being Jason Calacanis’ Twitter posts about the overhyped gadget. Calacanis – co-founder of Weblogs, a network of blogs that includes the famous tech blog engadget – admitted to the world that he is one of the beta testers of the Apple Tablet; he says his unit was given to him 10 days ago. While he won’t show pics or even say what the gadget’s formal name will be, he swears by his revelations, almost all of which are quite specific. Here are some of Calacanis’ revelations: “The price will be 599, 699 and 799 (I think it’s safe to say the prices are in US $) depending on size and memory in apple tablet.

“I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” Goes GSM and GPS

Remember the “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” TV commercials from the 80’s? The advertised product was a personal emergency response system (PERS) for seniors that included a base station and a pendant that interfaced with an analog phone to dial out for help when the pendant’s button was pressed. MobileHelp is a more modern version of that device. It incorporates GSM and GPS features so the person using the product isn’t restricted to their home

Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis

We’ve heard of a few inventive ideas for detecting tsunamis, and it looks like a group of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA ) have now come up with another: put all those undersea internet cables to a second use. While they haven’t moved beyond computer models just yet, the group has apparently found that voltmeters attached to the end of an undersea cable are able to detect the small electric field stirred up by tsunamis, which measure around 500 millivolts. As New Scientist reports, however, the idea does have some considerable limitations, including that it wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the exact location or direction of a tsunami, and that any such system would first need to filter out noise caused by other natural events and even the cable itself. Other researchers also caution that it’s just as important to develop a system to quickly pass on a warning to potentially affected areas once a tsunami has been detected. Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:02:00 EST.

Star Wars (Chess) In 3D!

No, Lucas hasn’t officially announced a 3D version of Star Wars (although the release of Avatar might be the driving force that finally makes it happen), but there is a 3D chess board scheduled to come out next month. The image is grainy and there isn’t much info, but the board appears to include pieces with “beloved Star Wars characters” that use “the latest in motion printed technology.” Product Page (£18 or $29/Pre-Order for 2/28)

Nokia wants to turn mobile phones into mobile radars

Today, Nokia unveiled that it’s working on a “mobile radar” concept at its Nokia Research Center (NRC) in Helsinki. Nokia has implemented an active radar sensor into a phone, allowing it “to measure speed and the direction of movement of approaching objects, just like a traditional RADAR would.” The mobile radar technology could be used in controlling your phone’s functions with hand gestures, in personal safety, or in sport. It might be used in gaming, too – perhaps something similar to Nintendo’s Wii, but played on a phone. A video demonstration of the mobile radar (on a Nokia N95) can be watched below: Nokia didn’t say when (or if) we’ll be able to buy phones with mobile radars included. Even with wireless growth, Verizon posts Q4 loss of $653 million

Yesterday, Verizon Communications, Inc. reported a Q4 loss of $653 million, despite a strong showing from its wireless division. Verizon Wireless has the most retail customers of any U.S. carrier, and added 2.2 million new lines during Q4 — almost all of which were post-paid customers — bringing their total customer base to 91.4 million. Losses are being credited to a shrinking land-line customer base, as users move exclusively to cell phones, which was down 3.9% in Q4

intel inside casinos: smarter ways of taking your money

Dhiram over at Newlaunches spotted this Intel video showing the company’s vision of a modern-day casino, one that can be managed remotely, has electronic card tables, Core2Duo-powered slot machines and even handheld gambling devices. It’s all fancy tech, but I don’t think the current gambling generation will be so impressed or welcoming of the improvements on their end. I mean, if you’ve been playing poker using good ol’ cards for decades, it won’t be that easy to switch to touchscreens won’t it? Click to View Embedded Video Clip Also, isn’t a Core2Duo slot machine just overkill? Will players be able to send instant messages or emails while playing?

Light Touch projected touchscreen gets daylight demo [Video]

Light Blue Optics launched their Light Touch projected display technology back at CES 2010 , but the majority of the video demos we saw were performed in relatively low-light environments.  Obviously the team are braver now, since they’ve taken their prototype – which uses a laser projector to create an image, and sensors to track finger-movement around that image – over to show to Robert Scoble. Video demo after the cut The prototype creates a roughly A3-sized display on any surface, and since laser pico-projectors don’t require manual focusing the image is always clear and crisp.  An infrared light source is then used to track your fingers as they interact with on-screen icons and controls

Official Apple iPad Picture Gallery

Unlike the iPhone, the Apple iPad “uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching) and has a wide, 178-degree viewing angle.” Plus, “the A4 chip inside iPad was custom-designed by Apple engineers to be extremely powerful, and yet extremely power efficient.” Click here for first picture in gallery. To maximize battery life, Apple engineers took the same lithium polymer battery technology they developed for our notebook computers and applied it to the iPad. As a result, you can use iPad for up to 10 hours while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos, or listening to music. [via Apple ]
