China says Android can stay, misses Google’s point
A Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesperson has today delivered a statement affirming China’s willingness to allow Android devices to operate within the country without restriction so long as they adhere to the nation’s laws. This means that whatever China’s response to Google no longer obeying its censorship edicts may be, it won’t be to disallow Android — which kind of makes sense considering the growing roster of OPhones out there, all running a remixed version of the dessert-loving mobile OS. Then again, Google’s latest power play was to hold back Android handsets from entering China, so we’re not entirely sure how much the Mountain View outfit cares about the Middle Kingdom’s apparent benevolence. China says Android can stay, misses Google’s point originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 03:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds .

Thanks to slumping DS sales (only took five years!), and Wii price cuts, Nintendo posted Q3 profit losses of 23 per cent ($US192 million, down from $US249 million a year ago). It the first time in four years they’ve posted an annual profit loss. Looks like its time for Nintendo to respond to the iPhone/iPod touch boom, and encourage other Wii games besides “My Extreme Carnival Games 15″. [ Reuters ]
3D TV coming to British pubs this weekend, can expect chilly reception
Imagine, if you will, the quintessential British pub. A pair of elderly chaps sitting in the quiet corner discussing their best Spitfire manoeuvers, the teenage whippersnapper putting on a mature voice and trying to buy alcohol at the bar, and the inevitable legion of sports fans setting up for their weekly life or death football match. Now put 3D glasses on ‘em — doesn’t work, does it?

World’s Oldest and Most Expensive Commercially-Produced Camera and some philosophizing…
Made by Alphones Giroux in Paris in 1839 based on the plans drawn up by his stage-painter and showman brother-in-law Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, this camera will be auctioned on May 29 by WestLicht Auctions in Vienna with the starting price 200,000 Euros and the estimate is 500,00-700,000 Euros. Well, isn’t it always such a mix of feelings (at least for some of us) when we see “the very first” of the products which are already ordinary parts of our lives and hence we take for granted. After looking at this camera, one can (at least for a few seconds) appreciate the advancement and the variety of the cameras that are available now. Easy to say but this is how it looked 171 years ago and it is amazing how much and how fast technology evolved in the last couple of decades in itself only… Another thing is, I guess it is one of the ironies of our lives to witness a certain oldest genre of product as being far more valued than its newest and most advanced example.

Open MAKE Night at the Exploratorium, this Saturday
Michelle Hlubinka, MAKE’s Education Director, sent us this announcement about the upcoming Open MAKE Night at the SF Exploratorium : As part of our ongoing quest to encourage more young people to exercise their innate curiosity and creativity by making things, this Saturday, January 30th, we’re kicking off a four-month collaboration with the Exploratorium’s Learning Studio , TechShop , and Disney-Pixar . Our calendar of upcoming themes and makers at the Exploratorium: January 30th: Bristlebots & Blinkybugs — Ken Murphy and Windell Oskay & Lenore Edman February 27th: Wearables & Soft Circuitry — Adrian Freed March 27th: Make Your Own Kind of Music — Walter Kitundu and Krys Bobrowski April 24th: Motors & Mechanisms — Brad Prether and Ernie Fosselius Each Saturday we meet follows a simple schedule: 11:00 Dale Dougherty interviews makers in the McBean Theatre 12:30 Featured makers and hands-on making on the museum floor 3:00 Events end It’s a first experiment in a new program we call Young Makers, in which we intend to create an infrastructure to nurture kids who want to learn by making, beyond what they can do with construction kits. We hope to fulfill a dire need: satisfying a little bit of what shop classes used to do before they, lamentably, started getting booted out of schools. The idea behind Young Makers is to create a community, both on-line and physical, that brings together like-minded kids, adult mentors, and fabrication facilities — those who love to build and to learn by making. The role of the mentors is to help young people find a project vision if they don’t already have one, and then to help them realize that vision.
So the new Apple tablet has finally arrived and instead of talking about what it can and can’t do, lets talk about what’s most important! And that is the accessories that will be coming out for this baby – it’s dress-up time. The creative folks over at Etsy already have iPad Wings (hardy har har) because like the designer behind it says “Every woman knows that wings make pads”. These stick on decals won’t really protect or do anything remotely useful for the iPad, but it will probably make you the butt of many jokes. On a more serious note, Griffin has already released some cases: The Elan Sleeve, Flex Grip, and Jumper. All of them aim to protect your new baby, but are not really that fashionable or even that pretty.
Nokia Siemens Networks and LG Electronics achieve record LTE data speeds
Nokia Siemens Networks and LG Electronics have achieved an LTE downlink data transfer rate of 100 Mbps, the maximum speed for a Class 3 LTE terminal. The call was made using Nokia Siemens Networks’ LTE radio equipment including the Flexi Multiradio Base Station, its Evolved Packet Core network elements and standards-compliant software along with a pre-commercial LTE USB modem from LG. The speed record comes after the announcement from November 2009, when the two companies were the first to complete end-to-end LTE interoperability tests in the 2100 MHz frequency band. “LTE is the super-fast mobile broadband technology that we are able to deliver today
Apple today introduced iPad, a portable tablet with Multi-Touch display, 0.5 inches thick body and weighs just 1.5 pounds. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store
It seems that one of the clear themes at CES this year was the advance of wireless technology, particularly with respect to wireless charging. Proporta.com has just announced that it has thrown its hat in the ring of wireless chargers now available on the market. The WildCharger Pad comes bundled with eight different connectors that will accommodate most popular devices for the perfect solution to wireless charging, including Android devices. It will charge up to 5 devices simultaneously, a feature I notice that is lacking in some of the other chargers. The Wildcharger automatically gets down to business as soon as contact is established with the device to be charged.
The rumored desktop dock for the Nexus One has been made official today — conveniently (and accurately) bearing the official name of Nexus One Desktop Dock — running $45 sold separately or bundled with your phone purchase. As expected, dropping the phone into the dock triggers the Clock application to fire up to give you access to alarms, music, and weather (not unlike the Droid ), but the special sauce lies out back where you’ll find a 3.5mm jack that connects to your stereo system using an included 3.5mm-to-RCA cable.

Rumors and speculation bred rampantly over forums and blogs, nothing more than mere hearsay because nothing official had been released from the Apple camp… that is until today. At an Apple product event, it was announced the rumored Apple tablet, called the iPad, does in fact exist and is to be expected in stores by July 2010. Lost Knowledge: Wood engraving and Pictorial Webster’s
The Lost Knowledge column explores the possible technology of the future in the forgotten ideas of the past (and those just slightly off to the side). Every other Wednesday, we look at retro-tech, “lost” technology, and the make-do, improvised “street tech” of village artisans and tradespeople from around the globe. “Lost Knowledge” was also the theme of MAKE, Volume 17 Hot on the heels of acquiring a copy of the book Artistic Printing , which inspired my last Lost Knowledge column , I also got a copy of another book cataloging the lost wonders of a printing technology, namely, Pictorial Webster’s: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities , by John M
As we all knew, the cell phone technology has been developed so well. Samsung has been named as the excellent cell phone producers and the Samsung Omnia i910 GPS Unlocked has been named as the perfect cell phone for any users. It has so many eminences that other cell phones don’t have. If you are the Samsung’s fans, you should have this one as you collections.
Today was 2010′s first iDay- the announcement of a new or updated Apple product, predictably following months, or in this case years of feverish speculation. Steve Jobs gave the gathered press the first glimpse of the super-tablet himself, proudly declaring the new iPad not just revolutionary, but magical . It is undeniably sleek, beautiful, and impressive to look at but is it necessary, especially for people already toting around iPhones or iPod Touches, along with a MacBook or a MacBook Air? Here are the specs: -9.7″ LED backlit, fully multi-touch display, with IPS technology (IPS provides wide viewing angles and good color reproduction, important for a tablet that you may use both laptop-style, and as a media player). There’s also a special fingerprint-resistant coating, obviously good for a screen with a touch interface.
