Open-source hardware statement of principles and draft definition 0.4

A new statement of principles and draft definition 0.4 is up for Open-source hardware – your feedback and participation is needed! After the Open-source Hardware summit one of the requests was for all of us to figure out an “overview” of what/why we do this. We think we have a good start based on what many people have helped outline – here’s the draft: Open Source Hardware (OSHW) Statement of Principles (Draft) Open source hardware is hardware whose design is made publicly available so that anyone can study, modify, distribute, make and sell the design or hardware based on that design. The hardware’s source, the design from which it is made, is available in the preferred format for making modifications to it.

Garmin Forerunner 210

Garmin’s new simpler GPS watch for running is the Garmin Forerunner 210 which is going to cost $300. Compared to the Garmin Forerunner 410 we just mentioned 210 lacks the ANT+ wireless technology for syncing to your computer and does not have the fancy bezel. However it is smaller and lighter and has an extra week of standby time. You’ve still got the high-sensitivity GPS receiver with Garmin’s HotFix technology, and the ability to set up heart rate alerts to notify you when you are above or below your targets. When you’re in training mode the battery should get you about 8 hours, and by then you really should be done with your first marathon

Outlook Plug-Ins: Contacts Management

Contacts can come from all areas, and the average worker will have a list of email contacts, telephone contacts, and maybe even a selection of business cards to boot. On a small scale, searching these may only take a minute, but when this is applied to a large business, an employee managing several schedules, or even an individual who works in many areas technologically and geographically, organizing these can be a nightmare. Managing contacts helps improve efficiency when communicating for business and leisure purposes. A basic organization technique used as a standard in technology is the alphabetized list, but with the development of more visual and portable technology, contacts management is beginning to become an important issue.

Delorme PN-60W wins Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award

The Delorme PN-60W is the first of its kind; a GPS linked to the SPOT satellite communicator that enables you to send location information as well as short messages (think SMS) to others in the outside world no matter where you are on earth (well almost anywhere – See the SPOT coverage ). Try that with your mobile phone! We think the capability is pretty cool, and apparently so does Popular Mechanics because they recognized it as one of the best products of 2010 (is the year over yet?) The PN-60W joins a pretty good group of winners including the Nissan Leaf electric car, the Chevy Volt, and a pretty amazing compound mitre saw from Bosch. More cool products like the Delorme PN-60W at Popular Mechanics
