Japan Launches Solar Technology into Space with Ikaros
It was only last week that I was reading an article about how much garbage is currently orbiting space from the thousands of dead satellites and other space trash left behind from over the years. Well we can add another to the space landfill. Japan will be launching into space on May 18th, Ikaros a ’space yacht’ complete with sails. The flexible sails are thinner than a human hair and also contains a form of hybrid technology as it has solar cells to generate electricity. Costing 1.5 billion yen (16 million dollars), the point of this contraption is to set the durability and effectiveness of these Solar Sails.

Adobe: Android Flash Player 10.1 set for June general release
Yesterday Steve Jobs wrote a public post explaining why Apple doesn’t, and won’t, offer Flash support on its products. Adobe’s chief technology officer, Kevin Lynch, recently responded with his own post, in which he discussed Adobe’s continuing work to support other platforms including BlackBerry OS, Android, webOS, and Windows Phone 7. In the post, Lynch said that Adobe will show off the Android 10.1 Flash Player during a public preview at the Google I/O conference in May, and that there will be a general release of the software in June. Apple is now the biggest US phone maker – beats Motorola
Apple beat Microsoft a few days back to become the 2nd biggest corporation in the US in terms of market-capitalization and now Apple has become the biggest phone maker in the US. AppleInsider just covered this news, “Motorola announced sales of 8.5 million phones in its spring quarter, dropping it below Apple’s record sales of 8.8 million iPhones and vaulting the Mac maker into position as America’s top phone manufacturer.” Motorola sold 14.7 million phones in the year ago quarter, but this year its earnings were only down by 9%, due the fact that the company is now successfully working to sell more sophisticated smartphones rather than large numbers of cheap phones, according to a report published by Forbes

BlackBerry Pearl 3G Review
When the original BlackBerry Pearl was announced back in 2006, it caused quite a stir. Until that point, BlackBerry handsets were rather large, and chunky, and very wide. But then came the Pearl, and suddenly Blackberry handsets were almost the size of a normal mobile device. The size issue with Blackberry handsets was caused by the inclusion of full QWERTY keyboards, and whilst handsets these days with full QWERTY are a much more manageable size, something like the Pearl still has a place in the pocket of some mobile users.

Is Steve Jobs Sending a Message To ALL Cross-Platform Development Vendors?
By now, many may have heard about or read in full Steve Jobs’ “Thoughts on Flash” statement released yesterday. While much of what was written in the statement (and discussed around the Internet) was specific to Adobe and Flash, a statement by Jobs in the section entitled “Sixth, the most important reason” , can have a far broader effect on mobile device development – “We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers

Microsoft to get $20 to $40 from every HTC Android phone sold?
Yesterday we’ve reported about the HTC – Microsoft agreement according to which HTC has agreed to pay royalties to Microsoft , because it turned out that the Taiwanese company’s Android phones use some technology patented by the Redmond giant. While HTC and Microsoft have not disclosed the financial aspects of the agreement, it looks like HTC may have to pay serious cash to Microsoft. A Bloomberg article has it that analyst Rob Enderle estimates that HTC, as well as other unnamed phone makers, may have to pay Microsoft $20 to $40 for each Android handset sold. Of course, analyst predictions can be (and often are) wrong. $40 per phone is way too much

More than third of network devices running known vulnerabilities
More than a third of all network devices attached to business nets are carrying at least one known security vulnerability, according to an annual report released by a global IT infrastructure company. Dimension Data, headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, in its Network Barometer Report 2010 revealed that an analysis of data gathered from 235 organizations around the world showed that 38 percent of networking devices had vulnerabilities that had been publicly disclosed but remained unaddressed by their businesses. The data was obtained electronically through technology lifecycle management assessments performed by Dimension Data. The assessment technology discovers installed assets on a network, identifies their lifecycle status and determines their maintenance coverage

Chinese "Anti-peep" USB Webcam with Robotic Arms for Complete Privacy
An inherent problem with webcams is that hackers are aggressively finding ways to take control user’s PC through malware to peep into user’s homes. Other than putting tape over the webcam’s lens, Chinese camera specialist Gsou has this nifty USB webcam with a new new “anti-peep” technology. Their interesting approach is having a robotic arm that will automatically cover this camera lens of this one-eyed buddy as soon as a video conferencing session completes. This fella will put down his hands when it detects incoming Skype / MSN video calls. If you still fear the malware might still take control of the webcam’s arms, there’s an override function that allows you to use the unit’s physical button to uncover the lens only when needed

HTC Android phones use Microsoft technologies, Microsoft licenses patents to HTC
HTC and Microsoft have been perfect for each other since a long time ago, and the result of this strong partnership can be easily seen if we look at HTC’s portfolio of Windows Mobile smartphones (more than 30 of them, launched almost all over the world, via many mobile carriers). However, since Google’s Android came into play in late 2008, it seems as though HTC has starting to neglect Windows Mobile more and more. In the light of this, it’s interesting how now – only now – Microsoft has unveiled that HTC’s Android smartphones are using technology patented by the Redmond giant.
