ben heck’s xbox 360 slim portable hits the web

This is far from the first time that Ben Heck has put together an Xbox 360 portable , but it is the first Xbox 360 Slim portable he’s done – or that anyone has completed, for that matter. The new Xbox 360 Slim portable really is slimmer than his earlier attempts, measuring 1.5″ narrower and 1″ shallower than the previous models. He’s also got a built in power supply and it runs super-quiet thanks to the inclusion of the 360 Slim’s new cooling fan.

Garmin buys MetriGear

Garmin just bought MetriGear, a Silicon Valley company that has created the pedal-based power solution for cycling for improving athletic performance in cycling and other sports. Their product is the Vector which is a pedal-based power solution that integrates MetriGear’s custom force and motion sensor platform into the spindles of bicycle pedals to measure a cyclist’s performance. It even enables the independent measurement of pedal force for each leg. It looks like the latest Edge 800 and Vector will be merged into a package soon, communicating using the ANT+ technology to track your speed, power, distance, time, elevation, calories burned and everything else in between

The Most Disruptive iPhone Yet

Remember when I said Verizon isn’t ready for the iPhone? Forget it. Citing an anonymous source in direct contact with Apple , The New York Times on Friday confirmed that the two companies plan to introduce an iPhone 4 for Verizon’s network “early next year.” Crow, meet mouth. Mouth, crow. (Nom nom nom.) So far, we don’t have any of the details of the arrangements between Apple and Verizon.

Windows Phone 7 and “The Hundred Years War”

Well, I sit at my keyboard typing on the eve of Microsoft’s “Big Event”. Tomorrow at 9:30am EDT in New York City, Steve Ballmer will unveil the long-awaited Windows Phone 7 platform (for those interested, the press conference will be live streaming here ). For those who are involved with or follow the smartphone market closely, October 11th 2010 marks a day a long time in the making. I have had the great fortune to be quite close to all of the events of the last several years leading up to tomorrow, be they good or bad.

iphone + ds = fujitsu concept phone

Fujitsu seems to be a staunch believer in the saying that more is better. The company showed off a dual-touchscreen smartphone concept at CEATEC 2010. Seeing it in action, it’s not that far out, allowing for portrait and landscape view via a handy “swing action” feature. The screens are quite narrow, so landscape view is indeed the best way to make the most out of this phone. Click to View Embedded Video Clip Both screens seem responsive, but if I had this phone I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the huge gap in the middle

The Value of Tracking Software

Today, you can hardly see someone who does not have his or her own mobile phone. GPS tracking devices weren’t popular before and only the military were using them. These devices were used to track their units and even enemy targets. However, these days, there are lots of GPS tracking devices especially for vehicles. In fact mobile companies are adding GPS tracking features in their services.

Backstage at Austin City Limits Music Festival with AMD

With an amazing line-up that includes the likes of Blues Traveler, Norah Jones, Muze, Deadmau5, and the Eagles – just to name a few, this weekend in Texas the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival has taken over. We were invited to ACL by AMD and had the opportunity to go backstage at the AMD stage, which is undoubtedly the geekiest area at ACL. They have a Social Media Hub section set up there where lucky backstage visitors can take a picture or shoot some video, and then use on-hand AMD powered laptops to upload and share their sun burnt ACL mug shots on Twitter or Facebook, or wherever. In addition AMD is also showing off their multi-monitor panoramic gaming rig using Eyefinity technology backstage. They’ve also set up MicroCells for the best 3G reception at Zilker park.

Motorola Sues Apple

Motorola has filed complaint in the United States District Courts in two states plus with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on 18 of it’s patent infringements. microscopic pac-man

Earlier this week, I read about a tiny Pac-Man discovered with an electron microscope . But that was just a random scientific anomaly. Turns out there’s a real microscopic Pac-Man out there, and you can actually play it! Developed by Japanes design professor Kotoro “dotimpact” Tanaka, the microscopic Pac-Man [JP] uses a small video projector, combined with the original Pac-Man arcade hardware to allow play of the game through the optics of a microscope. The tiny rig reflects its image through a mirror to produce a 1cm square image at a resolution of 1439-ppi (way denser than Apple’s retina display!) Once magnified through the eyepiece of the microscope, it’s just like playing the full-size game

Random House Loves eBooks, But Not iBooks

(image courtesy psdgraphics ) Random House was the only major publisher last year to hold out and refuse to work with Apple on an “agency pricing” system. They basically said setting prices was not their job, but that of the retailer, and if Apple wanted to sell books they could set the prices too

Sketching with the Nokia N900

The N900 was perhaps the most interesting device that Nokia brought market last year. Regular readers will know that I am far more interested in the concept of a pocket computer than a smart phone, the N900 is clearly more computer than phone. As such you would expect people to attempt to use the N900 for the kind of tasks that they would normal perform on a regular computer. And they do. Michelle , a fellow creative and technology fan, has recently been trialling a Nokia N900 with the goal of creating some digital art with the Sketch application

Looks Like New iPhone CDMA Version Will Hit The U.S By Early 2011

Another source this time NYTimes states tat the iPhone would reach Verizon as early as early 2011. The New York Times ‘ insider, who reportedly had direct access to Apple, didn’t corroborate talk of whether it would use a Qualcomm chip , though Qualcomm’s dominance of CDMA makes it very probable. MacNN reports that: While Apple has simply declined to comment, Verizon has become increasingly vague in its responses and neither explicitly confirming nor denying that plans exist. At the CTIA phone show this week, Verizon executives wouldn’t address the question directly and even put the onus on Apple. When asked if the iPhone would be part of the 4G phone launch at CES, Verizon’s wireless chief Lowell McAdam dodged the question in either direction.

Haha!: Fake Halo Reach Kinect Commercial

This is a fake commercial for Halo Reach using the XBox’s Kinect motion controls. And speaking of XBox’s motion controls : I got the chance to demo the technology and it wouldn’t stop mistaking my wiener for a leg . True story. Half-true story. Okay, you got me: what’s Kinect

The Blackberry Playbook: The Ipad’s Succesor?

The line between phones and computers becomes more blurred with every few months of technology that passes. The original move was the release of the iPhone , and the subsequent smartphone releases that followed. These handsets featured call, mobile email and text capabilities, cameras as per previous phone models, and increased usability such as word processors, applications, and a touchscreen. Connection ports were added so that phones no longer served solely as contact devices, but could be hooked up to other systems and used for entertainment purposes. After a few generations of the smartphone, and in a different part of the technology family, the popularity of the netbook laptop, Apple had a groundbreaking idea to merge the two into a new form of technology – the tablet computer.

TravelTeq’s TRIP Will Pack You, Seat You, Carry You and Rock You

… and it will cost you. Nothing is more tiring than the journey anymore; getting to airports hours early, waiting in long lines, being herded like cattle through security only to find that there are no seats left for your oversold flight at the already over-packed gate … ugh! But the ends justify the means, right? And whether it is for vacation or business, we continue to endure the pitfalls of modern day travel.

The Lunacy of eBook Pricing – Example from the Forgotten Realms

Considering I am a huge fan of classic role-playing games, greatly enjoy the whole Dungeons and Dragons universe, have read and enjoyed some of the popular book series from author R. A. Salvatore including the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the Cleric Quintet, and have been intrigued by the recent announcement of the upcoming online-but-not-MMO computer game Neverwinter … you might say I was a ready-made target for the new book Gauntlgrym: Neverwinter Book I.

UAE and RIM resolve differences, BlackBerry service to continue after October 11

Reuters is reporting that the United Arab Emirates and BlackBarry manufacturer Research In Motion have resolved differences that could have potentially left 500,000 BlackBerry subscribers without data services after October 11. “The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has confirmed that Blackberry services are now compliant with the UAE’s telecommunications regulatory framework,” reported WAM, a state run news agency. “All Blackberry services in the UAE will continue to operate as normal and no suspension of service will occur on October 11, 2010,” the news outlet continued. The UAE had threatened to shutter BlackBerry data services due to their inability to access RIM servers through legal means if necessary; BlackBerry data was handled by servers outside of the UAE which created a security and sovereignty nightmare for the Arab state.
