Google Prepping for Nexus One and Multi-Touch Netbook Release in 2010
Google knows that Apple may have won the battle of the consumer smartphone in 2009, but execs in the company must be ramping up for a mobile takeover in 2010. That’s not to say they’ll succeed, but the company is inviting top reporters to a press event next Tuesday where they will likely reveal their Google phone called Nexus One — reminding many of Apple’s traditional show-off events for new product releases. For Google and Apple, the game is on. Yesterday details were leaked about the Nexus One, and they weren’t as exciting or game-changing as some had speculated (some guessed that the Nexus One would offer advertising in exchange for free minutes and even lower or free hardware). Gizmodo broke down the reality and the story with Nexus One site screenshots yesterday… the phone will be on sale for two prices: $180 for T-Mobile “Even More” plan contracts and $530 unlocked
Apple Updates Knowledge Base Articles for iPhoto, iMovie and Wireless Input Devices
You’ve gotta love the Apple Knowledge Base, for it sometimes has the answers. Per CNET , Apple has updated and released a few knowledgebase articles, covering issues with iPhoto and iMovie as well as offering troubleshooting tips for wireless keyboards and mice. Without further ado, here we go: iMovie ‘09: Referenced videos from iPhoto Library not displayed in iMovie Event Library This article outlines a problem where even though iPhoto can be set to import a movie and store it in locations other than the iPhoto library, if you do this movies that are kept in the iPhoto library will not show up for use in iMovie.
In an attempt to expand the theme developers we feature in this bi-weekly space, I’ve started to search out new ones on my own. This has yielded positive results this week — though we do feature one of our regulars. I’ll continue noting any new themes I cross in my BlackBerry travels, but this works better when crowd sourced. If you are a theme developer looking to have your themes featured, or if you’re just a regular BlackBerry user who has found an excellent theme, email me, jpawlikowski at bbgeeks, and I’ll take a look. Hopefully my efforts mesh well with yours, and we can put together some killer theme features
Hey all, just seen this and thought might be useful for some people (Personally this is the first time i’v heard of the app!!) It’s basically a tool to configure some of the key thing for your device on your PC and then send them to either one or several devices! (things like contacts, e-mail address’s, etc) Screenshot of Configuration Tool 5 Nokia’s blurb about the tool is that it’s mainly aimed at developers, but personally I think it’s also good from moving settings from an old phone to a new one, without having to search through all the menu’s! (Only downside right now is that is mostly works with the E-Series but others may be added as it also works with N97 (original and mini). Nokia’s Description: Simply manage the settings and policies of selected Nokia devices. With your PC and device connected through Nokia PC Suite and a USB cable, you can easily configure various settings on several devices at a one time, including: Wireless LAN VPN VoIP Email Internet Access Points (IAP) on several devices at a one time Also transfer files, contact cards, and applications The Nokia Configuration Tool is designed for: Deployment across mobile fleets that are of small and medium size The testing and trial of Nokia devices prior to larger scale deployments Currently supported devices: Nokia E51, Nokia E52 PR 2.0 and newer, Nokia E55 PR 2.0 and newer, Nokia E60, Nokia E61, Nokia E61i, Nokia E62, Nokia E65, Nokia E66, Nokia E70, Nokia E71, Nokia E72, Nokia E75 PR 2.1 and newer, Nokia E90 Communicator, Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini. Hey all, I thought I’d enlighten you about some of the document applications on the N900 including: PDF Reader Documents to Go: Sheet to go Slideshow to go Word to go Notes I’m sure you have all seen the one from Nokia (I actually did my video before Nokia’s one came out but just been away so couldn’t upload / edit the video I made) Nokia’s Video: This is more of a puff piece then anything else! My Video: I’d like to just apologise about the quality of the video and if you notice jolts, etc as the only thing i had to record this was a digital camera but at max resolution it only lets me record 30 seconds at a time to had to keep hitting the record button! Ow and I might have said “ummm” and “errrrr” a few hundred times so sorry in advance!! Let me know what you think and hopefully this will be one of many videos from me…anyone want to donate a decent video camera to me!!! p.s. should have a X6 in a few days so expect something about that from me soon!
10 phones that defined a decade: Brief look at Mobiles and Nokia domination in the noughties
[Forgive the length of this post. This was originally an extremely short post to show that out of Techradar's "10 phones that defined a decade, 5 were Nokia handsets] On Friday, it will have been a whole decade since we entered the new millennium. 10 years since 2000? How did that happen so quickly?
How large a memory card can your BlackBerry support?
The more you use your BlackBerry, the more storage space you’ll need. While most basic information can reside in the on-board memory, more advanced features require a memory card. Not only does a memory card allow you more space to store your pictures, video, music, backups, and documents, but it also allows you to move them from device to device, whether that be to a new BlackBerry device or to your computer. It also makes managing your data easier, since you can open up an Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window and access the card’s files.
There are so many iPhone apps to choose from and it can be really tough to know which ones are good and which ones are just a waste of time. Recently, PC Magazine listed their 40 favorite free apps and I think they’ve compiled a great list. I have chosen a few that I think are great. AP Mobile 3.1 is excellent because you can stay up-to-date with breaking news, photos and videos from the Associated Press. You can personalize it so that you only get the content that you want and you can enable push notifications so that you can know about the latest news as it happens. I have never bought anything from eBay but my husband likes to bid on gold and silver coins but one thing that makes it tough is that, if you leave the house, you can get outbid while you’re away from your computer. The eBay Mobile 1.4.1 app allows you to keep track of auction and power sellers and frequent bidders will find this tool invaluable. Are you a foodie? I am so the Epicurious 1.1.0 app is awesome because you can look up your favorite recipes while you’re at the grocery store picking up essentials. After making a shopping list, you will be able to check things off as you pick them up. The next one is a no-brainer. So many people keep in touch through Facebook so it’s no surprise that the Facebook 3.03 app made the list. You can communicate with friends and family, check out new pictures, get information about events and groups and look up phone numbers. Have you ever been out and about somewhere and decided that, instead of going home, you’d rather take in a movie? Almost everyone has done that but it can be really frustrating to try to figure out what movies are playing at which theaters. The Fandango 2.0 allows you to find movie times, check out trailers, read reviews and purchase tickets

One type of BlackBerry application that seems to be increasing in popularity lately is the LBS (Location Based Service) app . LBS apps are the ones the use GPS or cell tower triangulation to determine your approximate position and return local search results based on your location. N900 Mer UI – Portrait, New task switcher and dock.
Andrew Zhilin brings us his concept of Mer User Interface for the N900. What is Mer? “Mer is an outgrowth of Nokia’s Maemo environment, designed to flesh out the tablet-centric operating system into a full-fledged Linux distribution suitable for embedded and desktop systems of all description.” via lwn.net see also Mer Works in landscape. “only” 3X4 grid of apps, plus note, a dock of customizable quick launch apps (15 TOTAL – extras views other window of apps). Keep track of your BlackBerry usage with SmrtMonitor
Ever wonder how much time you spend sending messages on your BlackBerry? How about the amount of time you play Word Mole? A handful of applications will provide you with a rough breakdown, but none I’ve seen are quite as elegant as SmrtMonitor. It’s from the makers of SmrtGuard , a wireless backup and remote tracking service for BIS users. The application tracks how much time you spend on each BlackBerry application and then presents it in a number of formats.
Nokia most popular phone brand amongst university students
Financial Times reports that according to a survey by Mobile Youth consultancy, in a sample size of [only] 1000 : Nokia was the most popular with 30% Sony Ericsson second with 27% RIM is at 2% with their BlackBerry- however growth has apparently been impressive. The article actually isn’t about Nokia but about how students are powering the growth of BlackBerry. Perception on BlackBerry is that now, they’re not just for corporate consumers. With the aide of some great marketing (love BB ads) and celeb association, it’s cool to be seen with a BlackBerry.
15 hardware changes that would have made N900 physically irresistible – [15 essential hardware features for its successor]
The N900 is a great phone, but it is (as Nokia themselves have more or less said) a work in progress. I’ll say it again, it’s step 4 of 5 to Maemo glory. Software evolution to one side ( see firmware update wishlist for N900 ), understandably, this early adopter product isn’t physically “perfect” for mass market. I.E.
Symbian Freak has managed to get an exclusive interview with Tom Hall of WOM World. ShowAnytime is an app with potential and for a few remaining hours is made a bit better by being on sale. If the ability to put Power Point presentations on your iPhone or touch is appealing to you, ShowAnytime is a basic way to achieve your goal. It does have its limitations, but the potential for Power Point portability coupled with a way to display the file directly from the device has appeal. ShowAnytime supports .ppt and .pdf files, and because the ability to wirelessly transfer .pdf files exists in several apps, it’s really all about the .ppt support. Coincidentally, I recently had an instance where ShowAnytime could have come in handy had I discovered it earlier.
N900 as a home media centre: Best Nseries TV-out experience
A major strength of the nearly all Nseries range is their ability to hook up to a TV screen via the 3.5mm jack [and CA-75U cable-included]. The N900 is the first Nokia tablet that allows this and amongst all other Nseries provides the best TV-out experience. This makes the N900 a serious contender as a home media entertainment system. CA-75U – 3.5mm jack one end, RCA the other. Connect to any TV with RED/WHiTE/YELLOW connectors or easily attach via adapter, e.g. scart

I don’t think I’d be alone in listing Paperboy as one of my favorite childhood games. I was a bit young to enjoy it during its arcade run, but I certainly had the Nintendo version, and even dust off my old copy once in a while (when my NES actually works). It was also one of the first games I downloaded in college when I realized the brilliance of NES emulators. Now you can get that same experience on your BlackBerry
Am posting a short column this week, since news is a bit light due to the holidays. I’ll point you to a couple reviews and freebies. Jason Dunn Reviews the HTC HD2 Jason Dunn was one of the first Windows Mobile enthusiasts, launching his Pocket PC Thoughts website about 10 years ago. He’s been in the business long enough to become jaded, yet his response to the HTC Touch HD2 is nothing less than “ Yowzers !” read more
The best software for converting video to BlackBerry format
The BlackBerry has become a multimedia machine over the past few years, especially now that new models boast a high-res screen. Yet one of the most frequent complaints we get is how difficult (or convoluted) it is to transfer regular video files to the BlackBerry. The video on your computer sometimes isn’t optimized for viewing on your handheld
As I mentioned back in August, I’m of the opinion that the N900 is the most important Nokia device since the 7650. The smartphone was a pleasant way of getting a limited computing experience in the palm of my hand, but I wanted more and so I chose the iPhone as my main device. Does the N900 have what it takes to win me back over to the Nokia fold full time? Over the next couple of weeks I intend to ‘experience’ every aspect of the N900. This review is going to be a little different from the others I’ve posted here over the years.
