Why the Nokia N8 WON’T be like the Nokia N97. Nokia N8 vs Nokia N97.
Click X now or prepare for a mighty wall of text. For crimes against the smartphone and flagship name. This time last year, we were all in anticipation of Nokia’s hottest flagship – the Nokia N97.
Nokia To Focus on High-End Smart Phones and Mobile Computers
With Nokia facing competition from Apple and Research in Motion in the higher end segment, the Finnish giant has officially said that it will soon be launching new breed of smart phones, that will help them close the gap with it competitors. Don’t worry, Nokia is still the world leading mobile phone player but in the high-end smart phone segment its is facing stiff competition from the iPhone and the Blackberries. Nokia has always been good with cracking the lower spectrum of the mobile phone market but now they want to capture the share of wallet of high-end smart phone users. Most of the upcoming Nokia phones will be based on Symbian^3. Its first stepping stone was the Nokia N8 , first Nokia phone with 12MP camera, HD recording, HDMI port and Symbian^3
I’m sure a lot of you have seen my video walkthrough’s ( April 2010 & January 2010 ) for the previous versions of fMMS, well today frals (developers of fMMS) has released version 1.0.0 which also gives reason to graduate it from extra’s development to extra’s testing (will be done soon – currently still in devel). With the latest version, if you use the application is “Havoc” mode, you do not need to install any additional software like in previous versions where fAPN was required. Now just install and enter the settings into the fMMS application directly! For a quick guide, see the screenshots below: New fMMS update to version 1.0.0 Installation size (This is for update, new installation may be more) Update details (Currently in the Extras-Devel Catalogue but will be moving to testing soon) Select configuration to change settings (when you first start it, this will load up automatically) Enter your mobile number including the country code (i.e
Lucky Ahmed360from arabnokia (via finestfones ) has posted a shot showing Nokia N8′s USB TO GO in action. You’ll see it’s recognized and you can navigate the files all from the N8. This means you can plug in memory sticks (possibly larger powered external hard drives) and manage files with your N8. Great if you’re in need of some files from a friend’s memory stick but there’s no intermediate PC at hand for transfer.
The wait for the N900 firmware PR1.2 has been somewhat excruciating. On Sunday, the Firmware was leaked. Note, that many users had experienced problems after improperly flashing their N900 with it. Details of the changes were already shown here in this post , but below is a video of pretty much what we’ll be getting when the new firmware for N900 comes out. joshv06
Video: Nokia Free Navigation Launch TVC (Ovi Maps Advert)
The second of today’s postings of Ovi Maps adverts. (Check out “ Lost…Really Lost “) Nokia’s really ramping it up to let everyone know you have FREE sat nav with Nokia Smartphones. I like the phrase at the end…”you have reached your destination….you have reached your destination”. It’s a very global affair. Nokia – getting you where you want to be.
Hot on the heels of “The one that got away ” advert, here’s really, really lost I like the humour Nokia’s trying to put in, the whole exaggerated notion of the unpleasantness of being lost, and how, with Ovi Maps you can avoid all that. Though initial first impressions were that it was odd and creepy (not something you want to be associated with) I think the punchline delivers
Only a few day’s ago, Nokia officially released the Nokia Qt SDK which is a Nokia focused version of the original Qt SDK, and allows better development of applications for all Symbian, MeeGo (sorry does not support MeeGo yet but I’m sure this will come soon) and Maemo operating systems which means games, and applications can work great of all platforms. This is better for developers as it means that they are able to port their application across to a much greater number of consumers quicker, the developers in the video below stated that they have: rewritten an application from native Symbian into Qt in 3-4 weeks seen their applications available in the Ovi store a week after submitting reached customers in 178 countries in just 48 hours of launching their application Now the developers currently making Apple app store, apps have no excuse, if they make their app using Qt, they will reach probably 10 times more consumers and also have a much greater chance of seeing the light of day, without the worry of creating something which is against Apple’s many overly strict rules. So developer’s if you are reading this, start writing!!! To download the development tool, just head over to the Forum Nokia page: http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/Tools/IDEs/Nokia_Qt_SDK/ Don’t worry I have not forgot about us consumers, it is a lot better for us too, now if developer’s can make app’s quicker and across more platforms, it means the number of applications in the Ovi store should multiply in no time at all, so more free apps to choose from, more premium apps which you might be willing to pay for, and more competition between developers to make better apps and for a lower price!! Video: HD Video Sample of Nokia N8 real Digital Zoom (user Proto N8)
Here’s another sample of the N8 video ( taken from Amhed360′S post before it was removed ) It’s not by Nokia, it’s from a user. The other one I’ve seen (N8 on a plane ) that no one else managed to see matched the quality of Nokia’s official video sample.
Video: Virtual Reality 3D Head Tracking on the Nokia N900 (maybe Winscape soon too?)
Anyone remember that insanely smart Johnny lee and his nintendo wii head tracking? Now it’s on the Nokia N900! Here’s one of Johnny’s many incredible videos, way, way ahead of his time This has obvious applications in gaming and Johnny’s already demonstrated that it can be used like a virtual window. Winscape takes this to another level, integrating two huge screens that make it appear like they are real windows. You move and the view changes
Video: Orange Nokia N8 Pinch and Zoom Multitouch WebBrowser (+live pics of orange N8 and HDMI adapter)
Camb078 has found a video of the N8 web browser via DailyMobile Forum Member modysd and has uploaded it for everyone to enjoy. Apparently, this is an old video and the pinchy zoominess is smoother now and will be even more by release day. Some interesting things quoted by orange N8 tester: “software is still under developing” “the camera can use 12, 9, 3, 1.3, 0.3 MP , and for recording you will have three options (MMS , DVD , HD)” “the phone has one speaker near the camera but it is good and loud [chatting on twitter last night, the loudspeaker is supposed to be the most powerful ever used on a Nokia. The best ever is on the N800 - a huge tablet that can afford good speakers...can N8 really be that good?] “i hated symbian after buying the nokia n97 but now i changed my mind” Ahmed360 is the original source. http://www.arabnokia.net/showthread.php?t=739789 Alternative link as the above is down HDMI adapter dailymobileforum via blog-n8.fr Video: Orange Nokia N8 Pinch and Zoom Multitouch WebBrowser (+live pics of orange N8 and HDMI adapter) http://bit.ly/dqWiXE
Video: Nokia N8 hand freestyler sneak peak guy – Max Vlassenko.
I’m sure you’ve seen this sneak peak video of the Nokia N8 alternating between the 5 available colours whilst doing some acrobatics The guy behind that is a young guy called Max Vlassenko. Some videos from his channel on youtube: Another TV appearance I hope Nokia are doing some more work with Max and N8, namely using the N8′s HD video to film his skills so everyone can enjoy it in HD (unless the video is already by N8…ha, no unlikely as there are some close shots and the N8 has video focused from 60 to infinity.) More marketing please Nokia ^_^ Make everyone get buzzed about mobile photography again.
Nokia OVI App Wizard: How I created Unwired View App for OVI Store in 15 minutes
As more and more people start accessing the Web from their phones, it’s getting ever more important for publishers to optimize our sites for mobile experience. One way to do that – is to create a version of the site, optimized for mobile browsers. But now the other trend is emerging – stand alone apps for a site or blog, to run on Android, iPhone or Symbian OS. The problem with the stand alone apps is, that you have to know how to make them. Or hire some who does
News coming out of the emoze camp . The newest version of mobile email software Emoze as always is free, but now the free version includes all the the Pro.

Something Big with Symbian Tomorrow? #symbiancountdown at 12
This blogpost is brought to you by the letter S and the number 12. Last week, we saw the first of the #symbiancountdown, which was then at 108 . It’s been randomly counting down and now it’s at 12.
It resembles a super slim Game Boy Advance, with a touch of E97 ‘clone ‘; this concept called Orion by the Recombu guys is a dedicated Nokia gaming touch screen phone which relies on dedicated gaming keys as opposed to purely touch screen. The E97 part is the qwerty keyboard which appears behind the touch screen, but it has its own screen for texting too.
Symbian (community) using their spare time to make auto 4×4×4 rubics cube solver!
So if you were wondering what keeps the guys and girls over at Symbian (community) busy on their breaks or what they do just to have fun? check this out: If you think about it, it is really impressive, the N95 looks at the faces of the cube from above and checks to see what position everything is and tells the Lego what to do next.
