First Symbian^4 screenshots hits the web
Nokia has released the first screenshots of the upcoming Symbian^4 platform, and we’ll admit, it does look a lot more up-to-date compared with the Symbian OS that’s currently used on the most of the Finnish company’s touchscreen phone offerings. Actually, it sort of reminds us of Android with its use of a large clock on its homescreen, but hey, that’s just our opinion. This new and improved version of Symbian also features pop-up menus, widget support, and what many are wishing for, a generally more touch-friendly user interface. This is still continuously being tweaked and developed so don’t surprised if there will be some more changes prior to its final version

Concept Nokias: The Nokia Kinetic
Now before you say anything about the uneven base, you’ve got to know there’s some function behind it. (Thanks for the heads up Keith!) As described in the blurb, “The Nokia Kinetic is a magical mobile phone that makes receiving a call, text, or email more playful by converting digital information into kinetic movement” Basically, for incoming notification, the phone will spontaneously stand up.

Gallery & Video: Portait Music Player “Instinctiv” free on the Ovi Store – What Nokia Music player should be
Here’s a little GEM of an application that’s free on Ovi Store for your Nokia N900. This is by far the most promising user interface for a music player I’ve ever come across on a Nokia handset. It’s called “instinctiv”, download it from the Ovi Store on your N900. The player supports wma, flac, ogg, aac, mp3 and can be synced with the instinctiv desktop player (I think Mac only at the moment) CLICK HERE FOR THE CONCLUSION The first thing to note is that it’s entirely designed for portrait, which IMO is great on a music player. I’m often on the move when I’m listening to music and such only have one hand available to browse the music player.

Video: Video Call and Skype Chat on the Nokia N900
You know the tech have been talking about Nokia’s decline for a long time with the iPhone and Android innovating in certain areas but especially this week when Steve Jobs unveiled iPhone 4 with a certain feature that we are all so familiar with here in Europe for what it feels like forever. The feature of course is Video calling rather the ridiculous name of “FaceTime”. Now `Video calling has been a rather ancient technology in Nokia’s phones and I would like to remember the folks on this planet how great the Nokia N900 really is with this video underneath

Memory Lane, Part 1
If I had to guess, I suggest that very few readers of this blog would expect to come across a low quality image of an old Psion Series 5mx at the top of an article. Of course, we should never forget that Symbian, at the heart of so many modern Nokia devices, has its roots in the EPOC operating system running on the Psion palmtop devices, and that’s where this article begins.

House of Nokia: New Sseries and Nokia N9 MeeGo phone Confirmed? 7 top limit of C, E, and X phones.
Hmm…this house has no windows or doors (ovi) Today it appears that the New S series has been confirmed as well as the Nokia N9. N9 by common sense was already known when Nokia mentioned their new naming conventions of single letter 1-9 handsets – 9 being the highest – though never explicitly confirming N9. N9 will therefore be Nokia’s Flagship, and first Nokia MeeGo device that will push the extremes of high end for Nokia. Check out this interview with Alberto Torres, Nokia EVP,MeeGo Computers ..

What Nokia needs to learn from Apple Keynotes. Pointers from Steve Job’s iPhone 4 announcement.
This is mainly a tongue in cheek rant, written very late so it probably may not make sense. Note – if you are reading this, you are not the “public” which is described in this article. Again, press X now or prepare for walls of text

Nokia N8 vs. the smartphone elite: iPhone 4, HTC EVO 4G, Palm Pre Plus, and HTC HD2
Engadget has made a comparison of the iPhone 4 against what they call the smartphone elite – representatives of respective Mobile OS – HTC Evo 4G for Android, Nokia N8 for Symbian, Palm Pre Plus for WebOS and HTC HD2 for Windows Mobile. Based on the hardware categories chosen, the N8 stacks up surprisingly well (and nice of engadget to recognize N8 amongst the “elite”). Well if history is an indicator, this will be it for Apple’s iPhone over the next 12 months. MeeGo phones and S^4 can still improve heavily hardware wise (given the non-flagship price of Nokia N8, it suggests we should expect more from the main Nokia flagship that would unequivocally put it head and shoulders above this list) VIA Engadget

Apple announces New iPhone 4 – Not much for Nokia to worry about?
Nokia’s strongest competitor has officially announced a new iteration of their handset, the iPhone4. What does Nokia have to compete with on the hardware front? Safe to say, if you like mobile photography, iPhone is still no match for Nokia

Video: Own Voice Competition: How good is your accent? (Your own or impersonation!)
Nokia conversations are running an Accent Competition to celebrate their new “ Own Voice ” App to record your own voice packs for Ovi Maps Voice/Turn by Turn Navigation. Check out this cool video above. At first, the lady (Amy Walker) came across as pretty crazy (wasn’t expecting such contrast of accent, thought she was going loopy!), but after a second watch I found her really charming

Nokia N900 Portrait T9 keyboard in the works for Maemo 5
On Talk.maemo.org , Frals, creator of fMMS (bringing MMS to Maemo 5/N900 users) is working with wOOt to create a portrait keyboard for the N900. I’m glad they chose to do the traditional T9 input as that’s much easier to use with one hand (for me anyways -I know there are also many who would prefer portrait QWERTY) which would probably be most of the reason you’d want to be using the N900 in portrait mode. As this is an early project there are some known issues: No fast input. Multi-tap to enter a letter, it’s slow and *very* painful. Changing orientation results in the text you’ve written so far being lost To use it, you’ll need to ‘killall hildon-input-method’ after installing the package (or reboot your n900) It’s (a bit) painful to use in landscape mode (the QWERTY keyboard does not show up) Future directions include: Seperate layout for landscape mode, for easier use Fast, predictive input Automatic capitalisation Talk.maemo.org , VIA @gerrymoth

Pic: Nokia MeeGo Phone – Ultimate Convergence Device?
jedibeeftrix shares an interesting post, asking whether Nokia and MeeGo tablet phone could be the ultimate convergence device. In the post is an interesting render of what MeeGo phone could look like (updated with better render) A wonderful wish list of core specifications include: At least 4″, WVGA (the standard of Nokia’s first 3 Maemo tablets) AMOLED screens Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 (Nokia already confirmed first MeeGo phone from Nokia will be on ARM architecture) No hardware keyboard, rely on good capacitive multitouch (so that interface is truly all built for touch) Must be slim so a 4″ heft is more acceptable. jedibeeftrix also wants Nokia to open up Ovi Store to other manufacturers, like Intel is with AppUp. I totally agree with that and the specs wishlist. I’d also like to have some decent N8 like imaging (w/ xenon!) – hopefully that won’t push the thickness too much

Video: Closer look at MeeGo App Store – Intel’s AppUp on MeeGo Tablet.
Great choice of app to advertise there. Hope this is not some bad omen. To collate all the MeeGo apps, there’s gonna be of course an App Store. This seems to be coming in the flavour of Intel’s AppUp store. MeeGo manufacturers like Asus are said to be putting their own app store but this will be compatible with Intel’s AppUp.
