So What’s Up With Motorola’s Motoblur?

Just yesterday, Motorola introduced the DEVOUR (yes, in all caps) to the cell-toting masses. It’s the first phone to be released running the unique Android-powered Motoblur technology. What’s Motoblur, you ask? Well, Motoblur syncs and feeds your personal and work emails, texts, Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter updates from you and those you follow to your phone’s home screen without having to log into different accounts, or open up any webpages or apps. It’s all right there on the main screen.

Video: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Running Android 2.0.1

As we wait and wait for Sony Ericsson to get round to putting out the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 packing Android, it appears the guys over at XDA have got fed up with waiting and have done a bit of hacking themselves. Apparently they decided to hack Android onto an earlier version of Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA range, namely the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 which usually runs Windows Mobile, but as you will see in the video, can now dual boot with Windows Mobile and Android 2.0.1.

Symbian’s countdown was to announce that the entire OS is now open source and free for all

The mystery of Symbian’s countdown timer has finally been solved. Tomorrow Symbian will announce that their operating system has completed transitioning from closed source to open source and that anyone can download their code, for free. This is big news. It’s like Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) announcing that Windows is going open source

WebOS homebrew MyTether app updated, brings WiFi hotspots to Verizon Palms w/o the extra subscription

Since the last time we mentioned it, the MyTether app for WebOS phones has gone up in price from a requested $10 donation to $14.95, but that’s still considerably cheaper than Verizon’s $40 per month Mobile Hotspot plan. We’re still leery about what usage/overusage could mean for your contract & bill, but a new beta version has been posted that officially supports the Pre Plus and according to the developer “makes use of the API calls behind MHS” to let it work more smoothly. Even with the Pre’s openness to hackery we had some issues getting the beta installer to operate on our Windows 7 machine but once it was installed it worked as promised, giving comparable speeds to a dedicated EV-DO card on the same network

IM+ for Skype brings free VoIP calls to BlackBerry!

It seems Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL )’s change of heart in regards to letting VoIP iPhone apps work over 3G networks is having a halo effect on other VoIP services. Shape Services, makers of the popular IM+ chat client, has announced that it has updated the IM+ for Skype app for BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) to offer free WiFi-based Skype calls. The update makes IM+ for Skype the only BlackBerry app that allows free Skype calls – even internationally

Symbian’s revealing something tomorrow, but what? (update: open source!)

Oh, Symbian, you tease ! For an organization as committed to openness and sharing its roadmap (and its code) as the Symbian Foundation , it’s pretty unusual that they’d be counting down to a big unveiling of anything — but sure enough, they’ve been tweeting decreasing numbers with the hashtag “#symbiancountdown” starting back on January 26 with 108. Today we’re down to 12 (it’s hard to say what sort of jacked-up counting system they’re using here) with a note of “what will tomorrow bring?” so it looks like we can expect this all to go down in just a few short hours. One thought is that they could announce that Symbian^3 has gone Functionally Complete, a key milestone in getting it pushed to devices — but that’s a shot in the dark

Video: Nexus One multi-touch pinch zooming demo

The Nexus One in my pocket has just been blessed with Google ( NSDQ: GOOG )’s software update , which enables multi-touch pinch zooming in the web browser, photo gallery, and Google Maps apps. The lack of multi-touch support on the Nexus One’s Android 2.1 OS is considered by many to be the biggest drawback that’s keeping the N1 from truly challenging the iPhone 3GS. But, now that Google is rolling out the N1 software update over the air, the multi-touch argument no longer holds water. Which is the better smartphone? Well, here’s a little video demonstration of me multi-touching the N1 like it’s going out of style.

Palm’s Mobile Hotspot on the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus not so hot [UPDATED]

Section: Communications , Cellphones , Smartphones , Broadband Cards , Mobile I guess I should file this under “good to know” because I had been thinking about replacing my MiFi with a Palm Pre Plus now that it has the Mobile Hotspot app available. But after reading a recent article over on jkOnTheRun I am pretty glad that I have been dragging my feet about making the switch because it seems that the data speeds from the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are not nearly as good as that of the MiFi. I guess device convergence is not always a good thing. According to the testing, the results were said to be “disappointing to say the least.” As far as the testing, it was noted that multiple tests were done with the MiFi, Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus. Additionally, the tests were done only in areas that offered full 3G reception.

Potentially nasty new iPhone security flaw discovered

Wuh-oh! Considering its popularity and the number of handsets floating around out there compared to the number of security exploits discovered thus far, I’d say Apple has done a pretty good job of keeping things locked down. As this just-discovered flaw proves, however, nobody’s perfect. You can read the full technical details of the exploit here , but to make one hell of a long story short: the iPhone allows settings configuration files to be installed over-the-air through Safari, primarily to help enterprise businesses setup a bunch of iPhones as quickly as possible. We’ve known this for a while – it’s a crucial part of easily enabling tethering on jailbroken iPhones . The user must must confirm the installation manually, and the iPhone tells you who it’s from and whether or not it’s a trusted source – which (we hope) most would be smart enough not to do in standard cases.
