I’ve recently got my hands on these two devices , they’ve both intrigued me, each in their own way, whilst one was successful on launch the other has struggled to make sales. Many factors have played their part on this issue, something perhaps for another post

4 Reasons for Email Security

Every company thrives on communications; conference calls, corporate web sites, forums, internal communities and most obviously, electronic mails. But with all communications there comes the risk of eavesdropping, stolen ideas and the exposure of private communications into the public domain. And in all corporations there are numerous devices which function as email transport points in the communications chain. These numerous email communication points can include workstations, servers, handheld devices, smart phones, iPads, etc. With all the communication points in the chain there are many openings for email hijacking to occur

Vertu Signature Pure Black

Vertu Signature Pure Black Vertu has introduced its latest handset, the Signature Pure Black which is specially handcrafted thanks to the PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) technique that is currently being used in watches. This will require vaporizing a block of Titanium Carbide at extremely high temperatures using a plasma beam in a vacuum chamber, where the resulting PVD coating makes sure you are the recipient of an extremely rugged surface which is nigh impossible to scratch unless Wolverine comes along.

MDO Avatar G580 Android-powered handset

MDO Avatar G580 Android-powered handset The MDO Avatar G580 is yet another smartphone which is powered by the Android operating system, where it does resemble the HTC Hero although it is missing out on a chin. Measuring a mere 10.7mm thin, you will find a relatively slow 600MHz Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor running within accompanied by a 3.2′ 320 x 480 resolution HVGA display, 256MB RAM, 256MB ROM, Wi-Fi connectivity and a microSD memory card slot. There is no trackball with this handset, so you will have to make do with the typical direction button instead. No idea on its availability since MDO has kept mum on the issue, although it is going for 1,900 Yuan in China.

HD Radio Based Traffic – Clear Channel Total Traffic Network Plus

Clear Channel is getting ready to launch an upgraded traffic solution dubbed Total Traffic Network Plus for 63 metro areas that will be delivered through HD radio tuners in mobile devices like a GPS/PND. They have been working on a solution like this for a while; as they tested it back in 2007 . The problem with the existing RDS system is that it is delivered over the FM airwaves and is restricted in its bandwidth, tus limiting the granularity of the traffic data, the descriptions of the incidents and generally lacks the coverage that is available today through higher bandwidth solutions (think smart phones here – Inrix Traffic App, TomTom with optional Traffic and Navigon with optional Traffic come to mind).

Foursquare vs Gowalla -the battle of the check-in at SXSW ( a video comparison)

AUSTIN- SXSW has come and gone, but it has left an important mark on the social networking scene by making location-aware apps core to the participants’ experience of the event. It also raised the profile of the location ‘check-in’ feature, as popular Location Based Social Networks like Gowalla and Foursquare competed for the hearts and minds of those present at SXSW.Google’s VP of Geo Products, John Hanke, said: “the check-in had energized the conference.” Who was the winner of the ‘ mobile check-in’ at SXSW, then? Apparently, there wasn’t one, though this video produced by SimpleGeo gives you a good feel of how the different services were used (thanks to Troy for bringing this to my attention).

4 Ways to Access Exchange Server Mailboxes through Firewalls

We are conducting our lives and our businesses in an increasingly mobile world.  We need access to our critical business information from multiple locations and using multiple devices. These needs often clash with the requirement to keep our data secure.  Exchange Servers are kept behind corporate firewalls which restrict who can access them and how they can connect to their mailboxes. Secure mobile access to mailboxes on Exchange Servers is typically achieved through one or more of these methods: Virtual Private Network (VPN) Outlook Anywhere Outlook Web App (OWA) ActiveSync Virtual Private Networks A VPN is a secure communications tunnel established between two endpoints.  These endpoints can be two devices such as routers or firewalls, or can be between a client device such as a laptop and a firewall

3UK In Car MiFi

3UK have launched the in car MiFi unit in Birmingham at the #GadgetShowLive event. I have previously reviewed the 3UK MiFi and can vouch for it to be a very good device. It’s very easy to setup, the 3UK 3G connection was quick and stable and the overall I only have positives from my experience. The 3UK in car MiFi is designed so passengers can have access to a fast 3G signal via any WiFi enabled device whether that is their iPod Touch, Netbook, or iPad – all without a single wire needed. Boring journeys will be no more, nor will there be the usual kids screaming and shouting “Are We There Yet” because they’d obviously be too busy

Creating large mailboxes with Exchange 2010

Despite the benefits of giving users large electronic mailboxes, many administrators have been reluctant to do so because of the costs and complexity involved. However, those costs can be reduced and that complexity simplified making large mailboxes a more viable solution with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. That’s what Microsoft maintains in a recent white paper , “The Microsoft Large Mailbox Vision: Giving users large mailboxes without breaking your budget.” In the document, the company explains how new features in Exchange 2010 can reduce storage costs, as well as improve the operation of existing systems. What’s wrong with small mailboxes?

Many IT departments are evaluating the services they offer to their many clients within the enterprise. The iPad changes the game.

On Saturday, Apple released it’s new device, the iPad. I didn’t pre-order one, but I thought I would stop by our local Best Buy to see if I could snag one. If the line was too long I would just go home. Well, as I arrived at the building a mere 15 minutes before opening, I was ninth in line. I saw footage on TV later in the day that showed hundreds of people in lines at various locations around the states and Chicago in particular

What’s Nokia and Newegg Up To?

Happy Easter, from Nokia & Newegg to you. A little something arrived in my mailbox yesterday…(updated!) A large Cadbury “crunchie” Easter egg, courtesy of the fine folks over at Womworld . That was mysterious in itself, but included in the box was a message that read “We just wanted to let you know of a new exciting project between Nokia & Newegg.com…keep your eyes peeled for more information!” Interesting. The million dollar question is, of course, just what is this new project/partnership? Nokia makes cell phones and accessories, and Newegg is one of the Web’s favorite retailers (it’s definitely one of mine, next to Amazon).
