Protecting the enterprise from mobile devices
As often happens with electronics trends, the proliferation of a consumer device soon results in that gadget knocking on the door to the enterprise. That’s the case with smartphones. The trend started with the Blackberry, was supercharged by the iPhone and will continue to grow with phones running Google’s Android operating system. What’s worrisome about these devices is that they run applications… far too many applications that any IT department could vet for security purposes. Jupiter Research, purchased by Forrester research in 2008, estimates that by 2014, 20 billion apps will be downloaded annually to smartphones.

Teen Accused of Spreading Child Porn
Remember when my maturing self ranted about sexting ? Well, a 14-year-old was recently arrested for allegedly spreading a nude picture of his ex (of the same age) to other students in his school. According to police, the picture has now spread among “dozens of students in at least three different schools.” Again, when did young people start thinking that sending naked photos of yourself to someone else was cool? Then again, we have the explanation of the victim’s mother, who said her daughter “did something out of trust. I suppose wanting to be accepted, loved.

In News From The Wire on Thursday, I made quick mention of the slotRadio+ microSD card, which comes with 1,000 songs and an additional 4GB of storage for $50. I mentioned it to a few friends and acquaintances this weekend, and a few wanted to hear a bit more, so I thought I would expand on it today. On Thursday I mentioned that for $50, each song works out to 5 cents, with the card coming free. But, looking further into the card, it’s not quite that easy

microsoft looking for video game testers, offers free software
Citizens of the United States of America, young and old, noob or hardcore, Xbox loyalist, Wii fanatic or PS3 fanboy, hear ye hear ye! Microsoft is looking for video game testers ! The most likely location of the “Playtest facility” will be in Microsoft’s Seattle compound, but they’re encouraging everyone from the USA to sign up. Even minors can be part of Microsoft’s program, as long as their parent or guardian consents. As is standard procedure, Microsoft didn’t say what games will be tested, but the Playtest webpage does say that there will be a variety of games on a variety of platforms. The FAQ also says that Playtesters have to arrive early so they can secure a parking space. Awesome

Samsung’s Bada OS gets good response from carriers, Bada phone coming at MWC
Samsung has reportedly presented its newly-announced Bada operating system to mobile carriers around the globe and, according to Kim Hyung-do (Samsung’s vice president for strategic planning), the company has received good response from carriers. And speaking of carriers, Samsung has just announced that its first Bada phone ( Bada S8200 , maybe?) will be showcased at MWC 2010 (15-18 February), which means that it might be available starting this spring. Unsurprisingly, Bada OS will include the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, which comes with “chic touch interaction and components to increase its simplicity and ease of use.” Bada OS aside, Samsung plans to launch an Android 2.1 smartphone in the first half of this year. As for Windows Mobile , it looks like Samsung will further reduce its dependency on it – as we’ve previously reported . How to Unlock the HTC HD2’s hidden RAM
Lots of phones nowadays come out of the box with some features disabled, and it’s a simple matter of a little tweaking to activate them. Still, why would anyone intentionally limit the amount of RAM—that piece of hardware that makes high-end phones faster and thus easier to use—available to its users? Case in point: the HTC HD2 , which has 576 MB of RAM built-in, but only 448 MB of that available by default. Adventurous users will have to install “some custom ROMS” to free up the hidden memory. This potentially makes the HD2 faster, but most probably voids any applicable warranties.
