AirportAce HD App for iPad
If you travel a lot to the same location, you probably eventually learn your way around the airport. If you don’t travel as frequetly or you’re always going to different places, you may wish Google Maps worked within airport terminals when you find yourself arriving at gate A1 and leaving from gate Z42 – and you have a 10 minute layover. AirportAce HD lets you carry terminal maps for several airports along with you in your iPad; you don’t need internet access to use the information. In addition to the terminal maps, you can check airport parking and transportation options, and see a list of where restaurants, shopping, and other amenities are located. You can even learn if WiFi is available at the airport and its cost. There’s information for about 50 airports world-wide now, but the developer promises updates with new airports monthly – free for life. You can request an airport, too. The HD version is designed to make use of the iPad’s bigger screen and costs $4.99, but there’s a version for iPhone/iPod touch for $3.99. There is also a free Lite version (with only seven airports) to let you try out the interface and information before plunking down your money for the full … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: News , Travel Gear , iPhone, iPad, iPod related Tagged: iPad app , Travel gear AirportAce HD App for iPad originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on October 9, 2010 at 4:00 pm.

microscopic pac-man
Earlier this week, I read about a tiny Pac-Man discovered with an electron microscope . But that was just a random scientific anomaly. Turns out there’s a real microscopic Pac-Man out there, and you can actually play it! Developed by Japanes design professor Kotoro “dotimpact” Tanaka, the microscopic Pac-Man [JP] uses a small video projector, combined with the original Pac-Man arcade hardware to allow play of the game through the optics of a microscope. The tiny rig reflects its image through a mirror to produce a 1cm square image at a resolution of 1439-ppi (way denser than Apple’s retina display!) Once magnified through the eyepiece of the microscope, it’s just like playing the full-size game

Is LG’s tablet delay really an Android Gingerbread delay?
Some news coming out of Korea seems to suggest that LG’s Android tablet was never planned to run Android 2.2 Froyo, and that the tablet’s delay could be due, instead, to Google delaying the launch of its tablet-friendly Android Gingerbread OS, which was originally planned for Q4 of 2010. Random House Loves eBooks, But Not iBooks
(image courtesy psdgraphics ) Random House was the only major publisher last year to hold out and refuse to work with Apple on an “agency pricing” system. They basically said setting prices was not their job, but that of the retailer, and if Apple wanted to sell books they could set the prices too

T-Mobile responds to G2 Android smartphone rooting issue
T-Mobile G2 owners have reported that their new smartphones cannot be rooted, which would allow for deeper customization of the device. T-Mobile responded to the complaints and said: “The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory.

Adobe Air Android Arrives … Apps Already Arriving
If you hear ‘Adobe Air’ and think ‘huh?’, you are not alone. Unlike Flash, which is a pretty high-profile content-enabler (and computer disabler if you listen to Steve Jobs), Air is a much smaller and lighter component which has become more popular recently, and is used to fuel things like TweetDeck, the Good Old Games downloader, and the corporate Twitter-alike Yammer. There are a ton more, as evidenced by this article pointing out 60+ Air applications you should know . About a month or so ago Adobe announced that they would bring the Air platform to Android smartphones, and today they have done just that! You can now grab it from the Android Market, though it is a relatively chunky 5.7MB (not clear if you can move it to the SD card).

iphone merges with palm
I look a good design concept as much as the next guy, but the designer of the iPhone Next Generation concept has balls bigger than an iPad to rip off Steve Jobs’ gadget. Samuel Lee Kwon, watch out for Apple legal ninjas and keep an eye on the mail box for the inevitable cease and desist that is coming your way. Apple’s ire aside, this is one awesome design concept

distellamap: Modern Visualizations of Atari 2600 code
Software is a mix of computer instructions and data, but rarely do you get to see how the two interact in memory. Ben Fry visualized the code of several classic video games , giving insight in to the complexity of the code and how the programmer arranged the graphical elements. It’s also amazing how little was required to implement some of these games – Pitfall fits on one page . To see how far we’ve come, the visualization graphic is 1200KB, while game was only 4KB. What Do Jedi’s And Sith Do When They Get Out Of The Shower?
I’m all for Star Wars and other Sci-Fi novelty items, in fact I spend a good portion of my time on ForeverGeek writing about them, but what I really love are novelty items that are useful in everyday life, like the Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter I wrote about last week. Needless to say I was happy to discover new Jedi and Sith bathrobes being offered at the official Star Wars store

Gear Games Deals: Weekend Sales at Direct2Drive, Impulse, Atari ‘Classics’ at GoG, and more!
Another weekend, another group of sales! This week has some great deals, and some questionable ‘classics’ … but at great prices! So let’s get right to it! Good Old Games: Since Good Old Games has been shouting from the rooftops about bringing Atari-owned classics such as Baldur’s Gate and Planescape Torment into the fold, you would assume that an ‘Atari Classics’ sale would be headlined by these games, right? You would be wrong! Here is the list of stuff: Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare Blood 2: The Chosen + Expansion Independence War Deluxe Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos Master of Magic Master of Orion 1+2 Master of Orion 3 ($6.99 separate) One Unit Whole Blood Outcast Total Annihilation: Commander Pack I know, I know … there is some REALLY good stuff there, such as the Masters of Orion games, but even on GoG these are not the best Atari games … also, the deal is that you get 50% off if you buy it all, or 30% off individual games. Still not bad, but would be easily improved by including the recently added RPG games! Steam : 33% Off Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2! Still not a ‘bargain’ at just over $40, but this is the first sale I have seen for this game since it was released a year ago. Impulse Big 50% Off Sale Divinity II: Ego Draconis Sacred 2: Fallen Angel … and more! GamersGate Has yet another big sale – with prices slashed on 36 games from 15% – 60%, and including stuff like the Hearts of Iron II Complete collection for $9.99! Direct2Drive For the weekend D2D are having a ’15% off action games’ with more than 500 games included! And just to reiterate, Spiderweb Software 15th Anniversary Sale From Jeff Vogel’s Blog It was fifteen years ago that fledgling Indie game developer Spiderweb Software released its first game out into the wild.

Choosing a silicone for casting soft buttons
MAKE pal Steve Cooley, who manufactures the Beatseqr hardware performance controller, has posted the lab notes from his recent experiments with various silicone products for casting monolithic soft button arrays. I love it when people do this–the steps and missteps that happen along the way are often as interesting, and as helpful, as the finished product. HTC Desire HD and Desire Z are delayed
Reports are coming in from major UK retailers that HTC’s latest and greatest, the Desire HD and Desire Z , have both been delayed. These phones were supposed to launch in the first half of October, but now it seems like they will barely make October and ship at the very end of the month. Customers who’ve pre-ordered either device and inquired to their respective retailer have gotten pretty much the exact same response: the smartphones are delayed due to “Google testing” or “Google Type Approval”. Apparently this is a process that all Android devices must go through, and HTC has been known to have such delays in the past – with the Desire, for example. What you see above is a screengrab from Superetrader, one UK retailer
