The first sample videos from the Sony Ericsson Vivaz are out and kind of incredible

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz (previously known as “Kurara”) still doesn’t have an official release date, but it looks like someone in Sony Ericsson’s camp has been playing with one lately. The company just released a pair of sample videos, marking the first time anyone outside of SE has seen footage shot on this handset. Now, given that one of the flagship features of this handset is its 720p video recording mode, we didn’t exactly expect the camera quality to be garbage – but hot damn are these videos impressive. Check out the videos below, won’t you? The first video alone is pretty impressive, even if they are kind of cheating; if those E-Trade commercials and countless viral videos have proven anything, it’s that babies make everything better.

How-To: Adjustable kids’ bike jump

Insructables user murphtron writes: My son started riding a 16″ bike at 4 years old without training wheels. (He was first on a push bike without training wheels or pedals at about 3 1/2.) One day he decided to build a jump in the back yard. So he found a piece of 2 x 12 ramp (with random lumber laying around) and piled up some logs. He discovered it was a bit tricky to ride in the grass and hit his narrow ramp

The 404 Podcast 511: Where the more you ignore us, the closer we get

King-size thanks to Props Guy Jim! (Click for larger image.) (Credit: Jim Sleeth) All the recent frenzy over the Apple iPad might be too much for the tech nerds of the world to handle. Tuesday, Josh Topolsky of Engadget reported on a disturbingly high volume of “ugly, pointless, and frankly threatening” comments on the Web site and took action by indefinitely closing all comments on the blog . We appreciate Josh’s wake-up call, although vocalizing one’s opinion through anonymous blog comments is just another extension of the Internet. We definitely empathize with the site’s moderators, however, who must be tearing their hair out trying to protect Engadget visitors from trolls, predators, idiots, and all the other lobos on the Web. Good luck with that, guys! In other tech news, TechCrunch gives us a first look at Google’s interpretation of a modern tablet device, as imagined by Glen Murphy, Google Chrome’s designer.

ARM CEO says netbooks could eventually grab 90 percent of PC market

Think netbooks are on their way out? Not according to ARM CEO Warren East , who said in a recent interview with PC Pro that while netbooks now only represent 10% or so of the PC market, he believes that “over the next several years that could completely change around and that could be 90% of the PC market.” Obviously, he also thinks that would be a huge boon to ARM, and notes that while the main CPU in most netbooks may not be an ARM processor, there are probably at least two or three ARM chips of some sort in each netbook sold. In fairness, we assume that East means netbooks will evolve significantly from their present state over those next several years — but, still, ninety percent

Orange T-Mobile UK merger may “affect competition”

Announced in September 2009, the merger between Orange UK and T-Mobile UK is not yet completed, as it awaits approval from UK authorities. If all works out the way France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom want, the Orange – T-Mobile joint venture will become the largest British mobile carrier, with more than 30 million customers and about 37% of the UK mobile market. However, according to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the proposed joint-venture “threatens significantly to affect competition in mobile telecommunications in the UK.” That’s why the OFT has asked for additional details about the merger from the European Commission

"Photo grandpa" builds mother of all homebrew laser triggers

A reader who saw Marc’s recent post about an Arduino-controlled laser photo trigger wrote in to tell us about the amazing work of Belgian photographer and Flickr user fotoopa (which, we hear, as “foto opa,” means something like “photo grandpa” in Dutch). That’s him in the picture above, with the awesome homebrew laser-triggered camera rig that he uses to capture amazing pictures of insects in flight and splashing drops of colored water . I’m generally skeptical of film purists, but fotoopa makes the compelling claim that no digital camera has the shutter speed necessary to do this kind of imagery. He claims the Compur #1 shutter used in his 2008 setup has a speed of less than 5 milliseconds

State of the Multiverse 58

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #31 During a quiet and rather wet weekend, I was feeling more than a little nostalgic. So to recapture my lost youth (not that I lost it all that long ago), I decided to sit down and have a good read through IDW’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight. I had been following the series on and off since it began, but not frequently enough. Some issues in isolation were not fantastic and I let the reading slip. However, taken in total they are a damn fine read

Fujifilm intros 3D Print System, which probably requires wicked expensive ink

What do you do if you concoct one of the world’s first 3D point-and-shoot cameras ? Why, you concoct a 3D printer (definitely not pictured) to work with it, of course! Fujifilm has just kicked out its new 3D Print System, which enables 3D photographs to be created “on the spot” using dye-sublimation technology to print directly on to the base of a lenticular sheet. Unfortunately, prints will only be available in four sizes ranging from 4- x 6-inches to 6- x 9-inches, but we’re hoping that some sort of magical firmware update will enable poster-sized prints for those really looking to drive their retinas batty

Don’t Miss The Cyber Shockwave Feb 16th,2010

The Bipartisan Policy Center has announced some details on event coming up called the Cyber Shockwave. When you think about how vulnerable our countries are when it comes to technology, it puts it in a different light. So why should we be concerned and what’s a Cyber Shockwave? Over a decade we’ve seen stories as an example.
