Chevrolet celebrates diamond anniversary of Suburban
(All photos by the author) I attended an event today at the General Motors Assembly Plant in Arlington, Texas, that gave me cause for deeper reflection. Chevy is celebrating the 75th year of the Suburban model. A single product with three-quarters of a century lineage – now that is something
Opinion: Apple, iPhone 4, and the Case against Gizmodo
I’m a pretty crappy journalist. I do it in my free time, and for the most part, I’m an opinions and hands-on writer. I don’t go monstering around the nation’s capital with a fedora and notepad, and I rarely find myself in a position where I have to probe into anything that matters past an arbitrary release date. I don’t always fact check if I’m not making accusations. But I know a scummy move when I see one.
May is here, spring’s in full swing, and folks are in happy circulation. From my home office window, it’s a steady stream of people on leisurely walks, kids and adults on bikes, kids on skates n’ skateboards, and the old guy down the street who proudly rides his Segway to the 7-Eleven. With gas prices and the economy being what they are, growing concern over environmental impacts, and a greater public harangue over obesity and health issues, I’ve definitely seen an increase in neighborhood biking in the past few years. And for all these reasons — not to mention the tinker-building-hacks potential of these diverse conveyances — it’s a trend we welcome here at MAKE. To celebrate spring, and all of the human-powered and other-powered vehicles, we decided to make May “Alt.Transportation” month

My favorite laser-cutter offering 3D printer parts kit deal
I’ve been hiring Angus Hines of Carrolton, VA, for a couple of months now for all my contract laser-cutting, and I can’t say enough good things about him. But, heck, I’ve never met him, so let’s focus on the empirical: Angus consistently quotes me about half what the big-laser cutters want to charge on the same jobs. (Hopefully he knows that, and I haven’t just shot myself in the foot by pointing it out.) Seriously, Angus himself says, “one of my goals is to help bring the price of DIY tech down to a more reasonable level.” Now Angus is offering a kit of all the acrylic parts for the open-source Fab@Home Model 2 3D printer at about 75% of what the Fab@Home preferred vendors are charging.
Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool : Wie-Chieh Shih made this somewhat intimidating laser jacket using 200 laser diodes. Looks great, but I’d be worried about blinding any audience that I wore it for. There are a few more photos of the build in his Flickr stream. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Arts | Digg this!
Journalists are already getting warmed up for the next big Apple event, the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where they will most likely get a look at the next generation of the iPhone. But there might be fewer people lined up, and not just because we got a peek inside the new model when photos of a prototype were leaked on a blog two weeks ago.
Chris Carter (founding member of Throbbing Gristle ) presents his latest sound generator, the elegantly styled Dirty Carter – The Dirty Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument uses a dual 4-stage shift register. Each register is controlled independently.
TiVo recently launched their TiVo Premiere Series4 DVR with much hype, only to reveal a box that, at least for now, is crippled and underpowered. Sure, there’s a new Flash-based TiVo interface, but the box couldn’t be any more plain, and the dual core processor is currently being held back from its full potential, as TiVo tries to get both cores working with its new interface. In the meantime, only one core is enabled, and that makes from some painfully slow TiVo menu browsing. We got our hands on the TiVo Premiere, and wanted to give you a look at the packaging, and the device itself, as well as the included accessories in the box. At least here, we can see that TiVo did something right.
Apparently a free mobile hotspot offering and an early upgrade promotion weren’t enough to convince users to jump on board the webOS bandwagon, as Verizon Wireless is adding yet another price drop to help move its standing inventory of the Palm Pre Plus. Verizon has slashed the Pre Plus by $20 bringing the final cost of the webOS smartphone to a measly $30 with a two-year contract. Remember, the Palm devices are being sold without a rebate, so $30 is your actual price out the door. With webOS destined to live on under the HP umbrella , now is a great time to snag a Palm Pre Plus… if you’re a fan. [Via Phone Scoop ] Read

At some point, every model builder looks at a kit they’re working on and thinks “why couldn’t this be 1:1 scale?”, which then leads to thoughts of being able to drive your favorite car, fly your favorite airplane or sail your favorite ship.
Kindle 2, DX Software Upgrade End of May May be Worth Wait
Amazon will soon be releasing a software upgrade which should provide a solution to one of the annoying nuisances of the device: the lack of a decent way to organize items. Currently, items on the Kindle are listed without sophisticated organization. Additionally, a zoom feature for PDF files is supposedly on its way.
Today Thumbplay launched its Thumbplay Music application for Android. The software, available in the Android Market, provides access to millions of on-demand subscription music songs. Prior to today, the service was also available for BlackBerry phones, and Thumbplay says it will soon be available on the iPhone. The service comes with a three day trial but otherwise costs $9.99 per month. Read the full story here
japanese soccer robot could put human players out of business
Actually, probably not. Robots are still clunkers in my book. However, it looks like the RoboCup Japan Open 2010 is currently happening in Osaka, Japan. It’s the world’s biggest robot soccer tournament (!) and has 225 teams from all over the world competing for the ultimate title in robot soccerdom! The competition was started in 1997, and has a goal of creating a bunch of robots that will ultimately defeat a bunch of humans playing soccer, likely sometime in 2050 – after Skynet has won.
