Sprint’s HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 finally coming on May 7?
This is turning into a serious boy-who-cried-wolf kind of situation, but evidence is growing today that HTC and Sprint are finally — yes, finally — ready to drop a hot batch of Sense-laden Android 2.1 on eager Hero owners. A screen shot of a Best Buy employee news page reads that the update was “delayed until this week” and will be “in all stores” by this Friday, May 7; what that means isn’t exactly clear, but it could suggest that all Heros being sold in Best Buy Mobile locations will have the update applied by then. As for current customers, Best Buy is sending out instructions on how staff can help owners upgrade if they happen to wander into the store, but otherwise, it should be available from HTC’s site (yeah, no over-the-air action here). Stay tuned, folks. [Thanks, John] Sprint’s HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 finally coming on May 7

Maple seed-inspired flying vehicle
When we did our Alex Rider contest , one of the kids proposed a tiny spy cam built into a faux maple leaf one could launch with a slingshot. We thought it was a clever idea. Some researchers at the University of Maryland’s Dept. of Aerospace Engineering were similarly inspired by samara seed pods and created the RoboSeed

Make: Time & Space: More workshop organization ideas
I just love checking out other people’s workshops for those little flashes of inspiration. Make: Online reader Kaas of Ashland, WI wrote in with some excellent tactics for storing hardware. First, she uses chocolate milk containers to store screws and then tapes an example onto the outside of each one so she know’s what’s inside — no labels necessary. For bulkier items she uses cat litter tubs. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Workshop | Digg this!

star wars voices on tomtom gps: you have arrived at your death star nation
If there’s one thing I really love about TomTom’s GPS navigators is the fact that you can download and replace the stock voices with different ones if you’re sick of the default. So you can imagine the big grin on my face when I found out that TomTom and Lucasfilm have paired up to bring us voices from Star Wars characters. TomTom plans on selling voice tracks from Darth Vader, C-3PO, Yoda and Han Solo, but they’ll will probably sell more Darth Vader tracks than anything, as is evidenced by this hilarious clip of Darth in the recording studio laying down some phat GPS tracks. Click to View Embedded Video Clip You can get your hands on the Darth Vader sounds now over at the TomTom site for $12.95(USD).

Oprah has her very own HTC Evo 4G
The Oprah Effect. All this woman needs to do is mention something, be it a book, product, or service of some sort, and you can bet your sweet ass it will get more attention than it ever could have without her. That’s the kind of publicity Sprint ( NYSE: S ) needs right now, and they just got a good dose of the “Oprah Effect” with their upcoming HTC EVO 4G Android phone. While she hasn’t explicitly endorsed the product, Oprah was spotted with an Evo 4G , and subtly gave it a name drop in a video

Windows Phone 7 based on a hybrid Windows CE 6 / Compact 7 kernel?
Up until now, we’d heard and believed that Windows Phone 7 would be based on Microsoft’s time-tested Windows CE 6 kernel — aging, yes, but still considerably newer and more technically modern than the CE 5 upon which Windows Mobile 6.x operates. Thing is, Windows Embedded evangelist Olivier Bloch just dropped the knowledge this week that the company’s all-new phone platform will actually be “based on the Windows Embedded Compact 7 core,” which sounds a lot to us like Redmond skipped right over CE 6 and went straight for the latest and greatest (and still unavailable to the general public) stuff. [Thanks, Jeff] Continue reading Windows Phone 7 based on a hybrid Windows CE 6 / Compact 7 kernel? Honda’s answer to Segway looks a lot like Serge
OK, so, Gareth may not like it, but this video of Honda’s prototype U3-X omni-wheeled personal vehicle my brother just sent me is rather more persuasive than the shaky hand-cam footage of nervous American riders Gar posted back in 2009. Although I agree the butt-pads are kind of creepy. From IEEE Spectrum : The U3-X uses a balance control system that derives from Honda’s research on human walking dynamics for its famed ASIMO bipedal humanoid robot. When the rider leans his or her body, an angle tilt sensor sends data to the balance control system, which in turns moves the wheel, maintaining balance. Also, is it just me, or does the U3-X look a lot like the Graystone’s house servitron from the BSG spin-off Caprica

Know Your Rights: H.264, patent licensing, and you
Know Your Rights is Engadget’s technology law series, written by our own totally punk ex-copyright attorney Nilay Patel. In it we’ll try to answer some fundamental tech-law questions to help you stay out of trouble in this brave new world. This isn’t legal advice or analysis, so don’t get all donked in the head. What on earth is going on with H.264, patents, and video encoding on the web? It seems like ever since Steve Jobs published his Thoughts on Flash the world has gone crazy
