Troubleshooting Public Folder Replication Problems

Administration of a server or of an enterprise of servers will often require the installation of updates to keep a system patched with the latest fixes. But at some point an upgrade or a migration will be needed. Email administrators, or any administrator of a system for that matter, will sooner or later encounter a situation where the most recent migration has not gone well. Sometimes it is necessary to rollback to a previous working version to keep the users and the managers happy.

iPhone Pro to get 960×640 IPS display, 512MB RAM, 1GHz processor

The folks over at DigiTimes are reporting a bunch of specs for the yet-to-be-announced iPhone Pro (iPhone HD?), which should be available sometime next month. Current word on the street is that the phone will boast a 960×640 high-resolution IPS display with fringe field switching. If this turns out to be the case, then the 3.4-inch display will pretty much be one of the most impressive screens seen on a phone, and things like direct sunlight will be less of an issue—definitely one advantage over OLED. The actual display is said to be about 33% thinner than what you’d find in previous generation iPhones, including the current iPhone 3GS, which leaves more room internally for a larger battery. The phone should also rock a 512MB memory module from Samsung, which is double what you’d find in the 3GS right now.

Facebook Fight Calls For Flight

Just as smokers are advised to select and work towards a quit date, the Web site QuitFacebookDay is encouraging frustrated Facebook users to cut the chord with the powerful social networking site on May 31. Founded by technologist Joseph Dee and systems designer Matthew Milan, QuitFacebookDay is asking prospective ex-account-holders to sign their email or Twitter ID to a pledge list. Monday morning, there were 2,635 “committed Facebook quitters,” according to the website, up about 70% from the May 15 count of 780. For a lot of people, quitting Facebook revolves around privacy

Microsoft releases stealth patches for Exchange

Microsoft released some security patches last month without revealing them to the public. Some of the fixes affected software in mission critical Exchange mail servers. The patches were hidden in one of Microsoft’s periodic updates issued April 13, namely “Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-024 – Important: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange and Windows SMTP Service Could Allow Denial of Service (981832).” “This security update resolves one publicly disclosed vulnerability and one privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange and Windows SMTP Service,” Microsoft said in the security bulletin’s executive summary. “The more severe of these vulnerabilities could allow denial of service if an attacker sent a specially crafted DNS response to a computer running the SMTP service,” it continued

Exchange Server SLAs, and Why You Need One

The worst possible time to define your uptime and availability requirements for an Exchange environment is when that environment is unavailable.  No email administrator wants to hear “We need this working within 2 hours” when they are looking at a dead server that is going to take all night to recover. Uptime and availability should be defined within an SLA, or Service Level Agreement.  An Exchange Server SLA should exist in all organizations, even those that provide their own internal IT services.  The SLA is between the IT supplier or IT department and the rest of the business, and clearly defines what is an acceptable downtime or outage of the Exchange environment

App Store Rankings–Distribution Strategies for iPhone and Mobile Apps

The following is a short extract from chapter 11 on ‘Distributing your Application’ within Part III ‘Creating Winning LBS Businesses’ in my forthcoming book, Location Based Services (written with co-author Murat Atkihanoglu), available for pre-order here . “There is a certain shroud of mystery surrounding exactly how App Stores work, with the various players involved guarding most of their cards close to their chest. And while there may have been 3 billion reported downloads from Apple’s iTunes store, it is anyone’s guess how many of the apps downloaded were later removed from the device. First, the bad news: getting your c onsumer to discover or find your app within an App Store is difficult

Followers vanish as Twitter squashes bug

Glitch allowed users to ‘force’ other users to follow By Helen A.S. Popkin updated 47 minutes ago The Twitpocolypse is upon us! Earlier today, as the microblogging site attempted to fix an embarrassing bug, follower lists suddenly disappeared. As the Twitterverse panicked and “Follower 0″ rose to the top of it’s trending list, Twitter assured its users via the company’s own Twitter feed that the issue would be rapidly remedied. “Follow count display is set to 0 and follow/unfollow is temporarily offline while we fix a bug,” Twitter’s own Twitter account reported at 1:02 p.m., confirming that everyone, from Ashton Kutcher to Justin Bieber bloggers, was affected. Earlier Monday, the microblogging network was beset by a bug that allowed anyone to force other Twitter users to follow his or her account

Exchange 2010 gaining momentum in large businesses

Microsoft Exchange's share of the installed base of message servers will continue to grow through 2011. More than four out of 10 large businesses will be moving to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 in the next 18 months, according to a survey released in April by a market research firm. “Exchange 2010 has even more momentum now than Exchange 2007 had at a similar time in its lifecycle approximately three years ago,” asserted Osterman Research in its report “Embracing Exchange 2010: Momentum, Migration and Growth in the New World of Messaging.” “In two years, Exchange 2007 and 2010 will dominate, with more users expected on Exchange 2010 than 2007,” predicted the report, which was sponsored by Azaleos, a manager of hosted data services. During that time period, the surveyors continued, the migration to Exchange 2007 and 2010 will reduce Exchange 2003’s share of the server universe to six percent from its current 45 percent of the software’s installed base. The surveyors, who examined data from Exchange-enabled organizations of at least 1,000 employees or email users, cited a number of reasons driving rapid migration to the new software
