r2-d2 gets a parking ticket from an astronaut
This great painting is by Scott Listfield . Scott has got quite a few paintings featuring these lonely astronauts in them. The whole concept reminds me of 2001: Space Odyssey . Except for the R2-D2 part – that reminds me of Star Wars . The lonely astronaut is a sort of leitmotiv that comes up frequently in science-fiction.

T-Mobile announces HTC HD7
Just as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was taking the stage in New York City, T-Mobile sent out a press blast to let us know that they too will be releasing a Windows Phone 7 device — the HTC HD 7 — in “mid-November.” The HD7 will have a 4.3-inch screen complete with 1GHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, and either 8GB or 16GB or internal storage. There is also mention of a Netflix app that sounds promising. The end of the press release also reads: “In addition to the HTC HD7, T-Mobile plans to offer an additional Windows Phone 7 smartphone option in the Dell Venue Pro, a stylish full-QWERTY slider featuring a 4.1-inch screen, 5 megapixel camera and a Qualcomm 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. The Dell Venue Pro is expected to be available in the U.S. in time for the holidays directly from Dell and select retailers with service from T-Mobile.” Hit the jump for the full release.

Wooden library, Italian-style
A commenter on last Friday’s post about wood samples shaped like books pointed me to this considerably classier and older version of the same idea . As he put it, “these books are about the trees and not just the wood.” The collection, housed at the University of Padua’s Center for the Study of the Alpine Environment , was manufactured in the 19th century or before. Each specimen consists of a 7.5x5x1.5-inch book-shaped box, executed in the wood of the subject tree, which opens to display samples of that tree’s seedling, leaves, flowers, seeds, fine roots, sawdust, charcoal, and ash. The spines are bound with samples of the tree’s bark, and of course everything is labeled.

Share that Calendar Want to call a meeting, but unsure about the best time to schedule it? Why not share calendars with key colleagues? Motion Math iPhone Game Makes Math Physical
Those of us who have learning disabled kids know that one of the most effective ways to help kids learn is what the experts (and my Sami) call “a multi-sensory approach”. The folks at Motion Math have clearly taken that to heart with their eponymous new product: Motion Math creates movement-based learning games that give learners an intuitive sense of math
