White iPhone 4 shipping at end of July in limited quantities

During this morning’s Apple press conference, where the company announced they’d be giving free cases to iPhone 4 customers (as well as refunds for anyone who already purchased a Bumper Case ,) we also got an update as to the whereabout of the white iPhone 4 . Originally, Apple said it would ship in the second half of this month

Free bumpers for all iPhone 4 buyers, white iPhone 4 to come at the end of July

So there it went. The big iPhone 4 press conference. If you were expecting for Steve Jobs to issue a recall , tough luck. What did happen was an intricate defense of the iPhone 4′s antenna design, even spiced up with tests on other (obviously carefully selected) phones, to show that the reception issues everyone’s been talking about actually happen to all phones.

Apple to give every iPhone 4 owner a free Bumper Case

This morning Apple took the stage for a press conference to address the iPhone 4 antenna issues that a small number of users have been experiencing. After Steve Jobs gave details on the antenna issue alongside data that Apple has collected, he announced that Apple would be sending free cases to iPhone 4 customers through September 30th. One caveat mentioned, though, is that Apple can’t seem to make enough Bumper Case s to meet demand, so to be true to their free case promise, they will source cases from their partner manufacturers as well.

Apple iPhone 4 software fix for proximity sensor coming soon

Steve Jobs, during a press conference today, announced that a software fix is coming for the iPhone 4′s proximity sensor. The sensor is used to detect the user’s face during a call and to deactivate the touchscreen. Users have complained of the device’s touchscreen activating while on calls, which has resulted in dropped calls or placing the caller on hold. Apple expects the issues to be remedied soon and included in the next iOS update. Read the full story here

New pictures of the Symbian^4 homescreen surface

In the past, we’ve seen some demo videos of the new UI in Symbian^4, there was also Nokia’s UI concept proposal before that, and now new pictures of the Symbian^4 homescreen have surfaced on the Symbian Developer Wiki . These are built in an emulator, using the Qt for Windows SDK. Symbian^4 will feature a complete Qt-based UI redesign compared to its predecessors (such as Symbian^3 powering the upcoming Nokia N8 ).

Apple Responds to iPhone 4 Antenna Issues

Apple have just concluded a hastily convened press conference, to respond to the growing bad press the new iPhone 4 has been receiving, in regards to the now infamous reception issues, popularly known as the ‘iPhone Grip of Death.’ The press conference started with a short presentation, led by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and he started off by pointing out that all phones will suffer some kind of reception issues when held in a specific manner, citing the BlackBerry 9700, HTC Eris and Samsung Omnia as examples. After explaining all the testing that the iPhone 4 went through before release, Jobs said that Apple were aware of the reception issues the iPhone 4 had, but didn’t see it as such a big deal, seeing how this is something that all phones suffered from to some degree. The rate at which a phone shows the signal dropping is calculated on a software algorithm, which differs from phone to phone. Apple have noted that there was a flaw in their calculation, which was resolved by a software update rolled out for all iPhone handsets through iTunes, which started going live yesterday.

Apple iPhone 4 press conference prediction

In just about 30 minutes, Apple will be holding a rare press conference to address issues surrounding the iPhone 4 . They’ve been pretty vague about the content that they will address, but it’s pretty obvious to all that they will be talking about the antenna issue that many have been complaining about (although we also wouldn’t mind hearing about a ship date for the white iPhone 4, and an update on the proximity sensor issue.) We figured we’d take a stab at predicting what Apple is gonna do.

Unboxing Live 061: Motorola Devour

After all the Motorola and HTC Droid phones, Verizon launched the Motorola Devour, and Android messaging phone. We picked up a Devour to give you a look at the device, which certainly isn’t aimed at the high-end smartphone crowd. However, since the Sidekick has pretty much fell off the face of the earth, we thought the Devour would be attractive to that younger crowd that’s into text messaging but doesn’t need an overly expensive data plan.

Sharktopus Gets Official Trailer. It’s Full Of Awesomeness

I never thought I would see the day when a SyFy original movie would please me more than the Declan O’Brien helmed Rock Monster , but that’s exactly what happened today when I spied the Roger Corman produced Sharktopus . How could you possibly not want to watch a move where a shark is combined with an octopus that can spit ink and tear you apart with razor sharp teeth. If that isn’t enough for you, there’s a ridiculous “plot” and I use the word “plot” lightly with a ton of girls wearing pretty much nothing. For the ladies there’s also a bunch of hunky guys…unfortunately both sexes get equally torn apart

Comics without copyright?

I had been thinking the past few days about copyright in regard to comics, what with the successes of Dynamite with Project Superpowers and the Black Terror, even as the original Daredevil also appears in the pages of the Savage Dragon and had been a background staple in the pages of FemForce. There have also been hints of characters mentioned in JSA history that I think have fallen into the public domain, such as the The Spider int he lead up to the first appearance in that tile of the King Of Tears. I’ve been reading over at TechDirt (totally comics unrelated) how copyright itself seems to be an inhibition to innovation rather than a incitement to innovation, as study after study flies in the face of convential wisdom. Considering the excellent stories that I have seen in the past ten years using characters that no longer have owners (America’s Best Comics spring to mind as well as the aforementioned titles). And I wondered just what comics would look like without copyright.

Qt Developer Network quietly launched in beta

Qt has quietly rolled out the Qt Developer Network in a hope to get developers on board. Still in beta, the new site offers such “standard for developer sites” content as blogs, wiki, forums and FAQs. From the mentioned blogs, we learn that future plans include Ovi account integration, groups, eLearning content, books section and videos. It is a somewhat different approach taken by Nokia (owner of Qt) to make a separate site — i.e. not part of Forum Nokia — though it’s still on Nokia’s domain.

New Graphene Batteries Recharge in 10 minutes

When a phone is out of battery, it takes long time to get the phone fully charged. The new kind of battery – Graphene Battries is developed to solve this problem by cutting down charging time from 2 hours to about 10 minutes. The new graphene-based electrode fabrication process in cooperation with Princeton researcher Ilhan Aksay under a cooperative research and development agreement with Vorbec, also developed by researchers at the Energy Department’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has been licensed to Vorbeck Materials Corp.
