Pre-Review Preview: Windows Phone 7

To make a short story shorter: for the last three days, I’ve been one of but a handful of people carrying around a handset running Microsoft’s unreleased Windows Phone 7 operating system. This specific handset isn’t one that’s ever intended for release, and, while it’s looking pretty close to done, the build running on the handset is by no means finalized. With these bits in mind along with my new personal policy of not reviewing big-ticket items until I’ve really lived with them (even if that means not being first out of the gate with a review; for logic, see here ), I present our pre -review of Windows Phone 7 in its nascent state

OtterBox Defender Series Case for iPad

The OtterBox Defender Series Case for iPad offers serious protection for your iPad.  There’s a silicone cover that protects the body of your iPad at all times.  The cover has grip pad areas at the top and bottom that improve your hold and prevent the iPad from sliding around when it’s flat on a table top.  Silicone plugs cover all ports and buttons.  There’s a polycarbonate plate that snaps over the front for screen protection; simply snap it on the back while you’re using the iPad.  The polycarbonate cover also has a built-in stand for watching videos hands-free.  You can even remove a portion of the case so the iPad will still fit into the Apple docking stations.  The case isn’t waterproof, but Otterbox says it is drop, bump, shock, and dust intrusion protection.  It’s $89.95 from

Renesas Outs Low-power USB 3.0 Host Controller for Notebooks

Renesas Electronics, as the single largest USB 3.0 host controller manufacturer, is beginning to face fierce competition from ASMedia to Texas Instrument and VIA. A price war has broken out that continues to drive price down to $3 range. Despite of that, the massive increase in demand for USB 3.0 chips will make up for the loss in profit per unit.

Apple AntennaGate Fallout

Following on from the Apple press conference on Friday, it seems that Apple have ruffled the feathers of rival manufacturers, by trying to implement them in the issue of reception problems. You may recall, that during the conference, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs came out to defend the iPhone 4 , amongst growing criticism of the iPhone Death Grip, where holding the iPhone 4 in a particular way can lead to signal going from full bars to no bars in a matter of seconds. One response from Apple to this problem is to admit to a flaw in the software algorithm that calculates signal strength, which has been dealt with by a software update that was rolled out via iTunes last week. Despite going on to say that less than 1% of all calls to Apple Care regarding the iPhone 4 related to signal problems, Apple acknowledge that where problems exist, encasing the handset in a case, or Bumper can help, so promise to be giving out free cases and Bumpers for the iPhone 4 up until 30th September. What happens then remains to be seen.

RIM hits back at Apple, BGR demos ‘Death Grip’ on the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9650

RIM has released a statement in response to Apple’s demonstration of the death grip using the BlackBerry Bold 9700 . Below is the official statement of RIM CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie as posted over at CrackBerry : Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years.

BlackBerry Storm 3 and Curve 3 to join the Droid 2 on Verizon?

Verizon has yet to officially announce or confirm the Motorola Droid 2 , but the smartphone is surely coming soon to the largest US carrier to make a great pair with the Droid X , and to replace the original Droid . Two new images of the Droid 2 have appeared over at Engadget , and although they unveil nothing new, they’re proof that the new QWERTY Droid is out there . Reportedly, it will be released in August. If you want a new smartphone from Verizon, but not on Android, it seems that the carrier is also getting ready to launch the BlackBerry Storm 3 and BlackBerry Curve 3 (sometime before the holidays). The Storm 3 might be a different version of the AT&T-bound 9800 slider , while the Curve 3 could be the 9300 , or something alike.

humane reader: the $20 computer

I’ve certainly seen our share of low-cost computers , but I can honestly say that this is the least expensive computer system I’ve seen yet. The Humane Reader is designed to provide computer technology to homes or schools without internet access or the budget for traditional PCs or Macs. The 8-bit computer can turn any television into an e-Book/Wikipedia reader. As a matter of fact, its makers say you could store 5,000 books or more on a single 2GB SD card (included in the $20 cost). The creators of the Humane Reader state their value proposition simply: “The Humane Reader can provide a virtual library to any developing world school or individual with electrical power for less than the cost of a single textbook.” Based on the Atmega328p microcontroller (there are actually three of them in there), the open source Humane Reader can be loaded up with educational content via USB, and it can display output on any video display with composite input.

First Symbian^4 screenshots hits the web

Nokia has released the first screenshots of the upcoming Symbian^4 platform, and we’ll admit, it does look a lot more up-to-date compared with the Symbian OS that’s currently used on the most of the Finnish company’s touchscreen phone offerings. Actually, it sort of reminds us of Android with its use of a large clock on its homescreen, but hey, that’s just our opinion. This new and improved version of Symbian also features pop-up menus, widget support, and what many are wishing for, a generally more touch-friendly user interface. This is still continuously being tweaked and developed so don’t surprised if there will be some more changes prior to its final version
