OtterBox Commuter Case for iPad: Sleek & Slender But Still Tough

If you’re familiar with OtterBox you know that their flagship case, the Defender, provides an paralleled level of protection for whatever device you choose to place inside it. However, that amount of protection doesn’t come without a price. The Defender is big, some might even call it bulky. It’s for this reason that OtterBox first offered the Commuter Series Case for the iPhone 3Gs and they’ve now released it for the iPad. The Commuter Series is sort of like the Defender’s little brother

Dabbling in alchemy

When I was a teen, I was fascinated by alchemy — not so much the whole turning lead into gold part or trying to play God and create tiny little humans in a jar. I was really attracted to the labware, the furnaces, the study of the physical and natural world and its processes — basically, the parts of alchemical practice that lead to modern chemistry. Professor William Newman, a historian of science at Indiana University, was equally fascinated by the lab procedures of alchemists. So much so, he created a 17th century alchemy lab at his home, including a replica of Sir Isaac Newton’s alchemical furnace in his back yard. He used their notebooks to recreate many of their experiments

Skype 2.0.1 for iPhone rolls out, Features Multitasking support

Along with almost every other iPhone app developer out there, Skype has just updated their iPhone app to iOS 4 standards adding support for multitasking. With Skype running in the background, you can now receive Skype calls and instant messages even while you’re something else on your iOS 4 flavored iPhone 3G S, or better yet, on your iPhone 4 . If someone’s calling you through Skype and your phone is locked, simply slide to unlock the display to receive the call, and as for the extra charge for 3G VoIP calling that we mentioned a while back, they’ve decided to can this all together and provide this service for free (carrier data charges will still apply though). Unlike Fring , however, this latest version of Skype for the iPhone still doesn’t come with video calling support. To download Skype 2.0.1 for the iPhone, just click here to be redirected accordingly to the iTunes App Store

FCam for the Nokia N900 is an open-source digital photography platform

The Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, California, in cooperation with Stanford University, has announced a project called Frankencamera (FCam). This is an open-source digital photography platform that allows developers to create new capabilities for digital cameras. Users will naturally benefit from whatever new and exciting photo apps are developed for the platform. The idea is for this project to nurture new camera apps that help users overcome the limitations of the currently available mobile hardware and camera software. The Nokia N900 was chosen to be the host device for this platform because the Maemo Linux distribution that it runs is very similar to full, desktop distributions

Pavlovian "Robot Rovers" from the 1960s

MAKE Managing Editor, Keith Hammond, sent us the link to this 60s robot Pavlovian dog simulator, created by Fred Chesson, and done with relays! The robot dogs shown in the photograph were developed by the author in the early Sixties, when the teaching-machine “fad” was approaching its heady zenith. At the time of the design, relay logic still had a cost advantage over the contemporary RTL gates, but some transistors were employed for the “eyes” and “ears” of the automated canines.

iPhone 4 gyroscope much better for augmented reality

Apparently, that new iPhone 4 gyroscope is much better than the accelerometer for augmented reality, as this video shows. What you see here is an iPhone 4 next to a 3GS, running an augmented reality program. You will note that the iPhone 4 on the left is giving away a lot more information. At least, that is what I think you are supposed to notice. I don’t have much experience with augmented reality apps .

MSI rumored to have TriDef 3D laptops on deck, no active shutters required

We’ve heard this song and dance before, but DigiTimes has it that MSI is on pace to shove out a 3D laptop this September. Before you open that jaw and feign a yawn, you should know that the company is purportedly not following convention by integrating NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology; instead, it’ll rely on Dynamic Digital Depth’s (DDD’s) TriDef 3D software for transferring 2D images to 3D. This means that users will be able to use cheap-o polarized glasses rather than the more expensive (and battery draining) active shutter variety. Somehow or another, the whole thing is supposed to launch at under a grand, so we’ll be poking around on the IFA show floor hoping that this one comes to fruition. MSI rumored to have TriDef 3D laptops on deck, no active shutters required originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 18:26:00 EDT

New Source Says T-Mobile Getting iPhone Next, Not Verizon

The iPhone sure knows how to stay in the news – an unnamed source at T-Mobile says that it’s 80 percent likely that the iPhone will show up on T-Mobile’s network this Fall . Previously, it was said that once the Apple-AT&T exclusivity contract ended (which has been rumored to end this year), Apple would take the iPhone on the road to Verizon . However, since Verizon uses CDMA chip-based handsets , and both T-Mobile and Apple use GSM, it seems that T-Mobile would be a better fit. Besides, Verizon is doing just fine on its own with all those popular Android smartphones ! Does this mean that if Apple leaves AT&T the iPhone would then be exclusive to T-Mobile? Find out when you read more.
