Outlook Anywhere versus VPN

Securing remote Outlook client access to Exchange As more businesses embrace the distributed workforce, moving more and more employees from the traditional cubicle farm into more of a work remotely arrangement (whether these employees are the classical road warriors, or simply working from their own home office) one of the most important resources they will need to access is of course email. As more and more companies embrace SharePoint as an Internet connected portal, and as other applications move to the cloud these remote users have less and less reason to come into the office to connect to the corporate network. This may present the Exchange administrator and/or architect of the next email system with the question of whether to design a solution that depends upon a VPN connection, or to deploy a solution using Outlook Anywhere. Both are perfectly secure and valid solutions for connecting Outlook clients to Exchange, and both have definite advantages and disadvantages. This article will discuss both solutions, and present the pros and cons of each.

HP exec Todd Bradley refers to webOS tablet as PalmPad

The webOS tablet slated for release in early 2011 hasn’t been given an official name, though an HP patent for ‘PalmPad’ led many to refer to it as such. Even HP’s Todd Bradley let this name slip during an Analyst Meeting. “We’ve already announced the expansion of our future product portfolio well beyond smartphones. We’ll have a webOS-powered PalmPad that will be set for release early in 2011,” stated Bradley during the conference

Delorme PN-60W wins Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award

The Delorme PN-60W is the first of its kind; a GPS linked to the SPOT satellite communicator that enables you to send location information as well as short messages (think SMS) to others in the outside world no matter where you are on earth (well almost anywhere – See the SPOT coverage ). Try that with your mobile phone! We think the capability is pretty cool, and apparently so does Popular Mechanics because they recognized it as one of the best products of 2010 (is the year over yet?) The PN-60W joins a pretty good group of winners including the Nissan Leaf electric car, the Chevy Volt, and a pretty amazing compound mitre saw from Bosch. Apple is world’s second largest company by market cap

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Apple was in danger of going out of business yet now they are the world’s second largest company (in terms of market cap) and not too far away from snatching the No.1 position held by Exxon. Apple, maker of the Mac, the iPod, iPhone and iPad, surpassed Chinese oil giant PetroChina during trading on Thursday to become the world’s second-largest company in terms of market value. Apple shares hit a record 292.76 dollars during trading on Wall Street, giving the California gadget-maker a market capitalization of 266 billion dollars, more than PetroChina’s 265 billion dollars.

Hulu Plus coming to Roku and TiVo Premiere

If you’re ready to cut the cable cord, it looks like Hulu Plus may be just the thing to facilitate that. Already available in beta on the PS3, as well as on the iPad and iOS devices, it was just announced that the service is coming to Roku ‘s line of set top boxes, and that it’ll also be added to the TiVo Premiere as a service. Hulu Plus will also be made available to the general public on the Xbox 360 in 2011 as well. Depending on which shows you watch, the $10 Hulu Plus monthly fee may very well allow you to ditch your cable TV package, especially if paired with Netflix. The Keys to Great App Discoverability-App Store Tricks for Mobile 2.0 (PART I)

BlackBerry Playbook: The RIM tablet

Today RIM (Research in Motion) finally introduced the world to the BlackBerry Playbook. The Playbook is a 7-inch tablet that RIM hopes will be a healthy competitor to the Apple iPad , and runs its own custom version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS. The insides of this thing sound pretty good as well, and almost put the iPad to shame: a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, front and rear facing cameras that both support high definition, Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration, HDMI out, USB, and HTML5 support. It’s got a widescreen 1024 x 600 display that supports multi-touch, and RIM was proud to announce that the Playbook will connect with BlackBerry enterprise servers right out of the box.
