Sprint Defies Verizon, Will Not Raise ETF

Yesterday it was reported that Verizon will likely be doubling its Early Termination Fee on “advanced devices” (read: Droid and other smartphones) to prevent possible online phone-flipping. I was worried that this would have a negative ripple effect on the rest of U.S. telecom, causing every other wireless provider to follow suit. So far, 1 out of the other 3 major carriers has stepped up to the plate and rejected that notion. That particular carrier is Sprint.

Verizon unleashes HTC Droid Eris for only $99

Verizon has just announced the HTC Droid Eris, their second Android phone next to the Motorola Droid . The HTC Droid Eris features a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, full HTML browser with Flash Lite support, 3.5mm jack, HTC Sense UI, and comes pre-installed with an 8GB microSD card. They didn’t go into detail as to what version of Android is running on the Droid Eris, but a prior report suggests that Android 1.5 is its bundled OS. That’s the real deal breaker in the whole package

The N900: A Game Changer for Nokia (First Impressions)

The N900: A Game Changer for Nokia? The release of the N900 comes at an important time in Nokia’s history. Despite a new Symbian operating system, new touch handsets, and a growing smartphone market, the company’s smartphone division is faltering, with market share dropping 6% in the previous quarter. It’s not too hard to see why: competition is fierce, with Apple and Android phones getting better, cheaper, and faster. Add to that Nokia’s Symbian S60 operating system, which hasn’t evolved with the times, and things are looking pretty grim

Nokia N97 Mini is the younger brother of the Nokia N97. N97 Mini is a bit smaller in size than the Nokia N97 and misses the D Pad. Specs wise it is almost like the Nokia N97 and price wise also there not a huge difference..check out some Nokia N97 Mini pics posted by Flickr user Rafe Blandford from All About Symbian , who also is a Nokia and Symbian fan. Check out the pics below and you can also check out AAS’ Nokia N97 Mini Review Part 0 . You can see that the Mini looks just like the Nokia N97, the size is a bit smaller and you see the d-pad is not there.

The intersection of arts and science: Between the Folds

For folks interested in the intersection of arts and science, the PBS series Independent Lens is presenting a fascinating in-depth look into origami titled Between the Folds . The film documents “a determined group of theoretical scientists and fine artists who have abandoned their careers and scoffed at their graduate degrees to forge new lives as modern-day paper folders.” Featured in the film are MIT’s youngest-ever tenured professor Dr

Meeting makers in Detroit this Saturday

I’m in the Detroit area this week, exploring plans for a Maker Faire here next summer. I’ve been spending most of the time at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, a treasure-trove of American making. On Saturday, I’ll be stopping by the new hacker/maker space called I3 Detroit in Royal Oaks, MI. I’ll be there from around 11 am to 1pm (give or take a half-hour). If you are a maker in the area, and don’t mind giving up some time that you might otherwise spend on your favorite project, please drop by I3 Detroit and share your thoughts on doing a Maker Faire in the Detroit area

Halloween on Berkeley’s Russell Street

Our very own Michelle Hlubinka, MAKE’s Educational Director, is quoted in this Daily Californian piece about the celebtrational insanity of Russell Street, in Berkeley, known for it’s elaborate decorations and large, costumed crowds. Below is one of the yard decorations Michelle’s family put together. Their theme was “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.” I love the Dixie cups for monster teeth. There is another: The third Droid phone hits FCC

Not sure what to make of this Droid-alike but it seems Verizon has another Droid on its way, this time called the Saygus VPhone V1 . It looks very much like the standard droid but a bit smaller and with a 624MHz Marvell processor. It’s abundantly clear that Verizon is going to run this Droid branding into the ground, ensuring a Droid army to overtake all comers. My question is who is this Saygus and why are they posting links to stories that essentially leak their own products

Art Heist build complete

My friend Tod Kurt and I finished building our laser tripwire art heist! (He did all the heavy lifting.) This is for the Machine Project Benefit this Saturday night. Here’s a sneak peek: We’re using a hazer to make the laser beams visible, which works surprisingly well in this semi-open space. To increase the spectacle we installed a few extra lasers that are not being sensed for tripwires, but just look cool. The heisters won’t know which these are, however, so it adds to the challenge without increasing complexity

"Large Hadron Collider scuttled by birdy baguette-bomber"

The God machine just can’t catch a break … A bird dropping a piece of bread onto outdoor machinery has been blamed for a technical fault at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) this week which saw significant overheating in sections of the mighty particle-punisher’s subterranean 27-km supercooled magnetic doughnut. According to scientists at the project, had the LHC been operational – it is scheduled to recommence beaming later this month – the snag would have caused it to fail safe and shut down automatically. This would put the mighty machine out of action for a few days while it was restarted, but there would be no repeat of the catastrophic damage suffered last September.

Samsung convoy turned out to be a rough and tough push talker for Verizon.

Users always appreciated both push-to-talk application and mil-spec protection together. This combination always worked thus Samsung’s convoy has kept the same trend for Verizon. The sleek convoy has offered various features like 810F compliance for shock resistance as well as dust, vibration, slat, fog, humidity, sunlight and extreme temperature resistance. It also has, pushed to talk with EV-DO, Bluetooth2.1, camera with 2megapixel; it also has Verizon’s very own much appreciated VZ Navigator having long battery life with 1300mAh

Verizon Officially Announces BlackBerry Curve 8530… Available November 20th

Research in Motion and Verizon Wireless officially announced the BlackBerry Curve 8530 .  The device will be available November 20th and will cost $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a 2-year activation.  My guess is that the new BlackBerry Curve will pick up right where the old BlackBerry Curve left off and become a big seller for Verizon. The big new feature in the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is most definitely the Wi-Fi and this device will be the first full QWERTY BlackBerry with Wi-Fi on Verizon’s network.  For some strange reason RIM decided not to include a LED flash to go along with the digital camera, although it is only 2.0 mega pixels and probably really doesn’t matter that much. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 is definitely geared towards consumers and will probably do very well with them because of the price and the success of it’s predecessor,  the BlackBerry Curve 83xx, which happens to be the best selling BlackBerry device ever
