Security tempers zeal for cloud computing

Security is major barrier to adoption of cloud computing. Security is playing a key role in the willingness of organizations to adopt cloud computing solutions, according to  a study recently released by Launchpad Europe, a business accelerator outfit based in London. The study based on a survey of 105 IT security experts across the globe found that more than 50 percent of them identified security concerns as the primary reason their organizations were shying away from embracing the cloud. Asked what their highest priority was when considering a cloud services provider, 37.9 percent cited security of the cloud infrastructure

BlackBerry Web Plug-Ins For Eclipse and Visual Studio Now Available

BlackBerry Web Plugin version 2.0 Beta 1 has been released for both Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio. The BIG news for this release is the new support for building BlackBerry® Widget projects.  These tools will allow you to create BlackBerry Widgets in a much more automated manner compared to calling the BlackBerry Widget SDK via the command line. We have also added a getting started page that will appear when you start using the tooling that will connect you with the right online resources, forums and content to speed your widget development. To make a long story short BlackBerry development should become much easier as the new Web Plugins make easier to create, debug and package up browser-based content and BlackBerry Widgets for the BlackBerry smartphone

Review: Powermat Wireless Charging Mat for BlackBerry

When the Palm Pre first launched, one of the coolest features was the ability to wirelessly charge the device by setting it on the TouchStone dock. Well a new product called Powermat is here to do the same thing for nearly all mobile devices. The Powermat is a wireless charging solution designed for a range of devices, including BlackBerry, iPhone, iPod, Nintendo, etc. So the first question you’re probably wondering is how does this thing wirelessly charge my device?

One week with the N900: 22 things I love and a few things (9) that I don’t

One week on with the N900. Although I’ve reviewed and given a first impressions of the N900 in September , that was based on very short weekend usage. Here’s just over a week (received N900 last Wednesday) on what I’ve found so far. It was only meant to be a short number of things that I loved about the N900 but one thing kept popping up after another

How To Use Your Gaming Headset with Xbox Live

If you’re anything like me, and I’m making an assumption here (because that’s what irresponsible journalism is all about), you might only have so much money to go towards fancy gadgets and various electronic compensations for a strikingly diminished sense of personal worth. That can lead to some trouble if, for instance, you have a decent gaming headset that you want to use for your Xbox 360 instead of a bona-fide sound sytem, since you can no longer use Xbox Live without Microsoft’s proprietary, flimsy headset. A few headsets, like those from Turtle Beach , alleviate this problem by offering individual chat volumes and the ability to both listen to your game and communicate with your buddies. It’s a worthy investment, but a bit of a waste if you already have a good gaming headset – dedicated XBL headsets can hover around the $150 range

Monoprice iPhone backup battery pack triples your power for $15

Okay guys, as much as we like our Mophie Juice Packs for keeping the iPhone juiced on the go, it’d be downright irresponsible of us not to bring this fantastic iPhone backup batery from Monoprice to your attention. The same company that brings you stupid-cheap HDMI cables is now selling a 2200mAh iPhone and iPod battery that’ll recharge your iPhone almost twice from near death, and the cost is only $15.23 – and it’s even less if you buy more than one. Sure, it’s fugly and nowhere near as sleek as a Mophie Juice Pack or Juice Pack Air , but it’s cheap! Sometimes that’s all that matters. Kim Dushinski Named on Mobile Women to Watch 2010

I am so honored to be included on Mobile Marketer’s Mobile Women to Watch List for 2010 . It is so exciting to be listed with other “achievers who have already left their stamp on mobile marketing.” There are some seriously awesome women on this list, like Laura Marriott , who is the Former President of the Mobile Marketing Association, and Tamara Gruber of Crisp Wireless who is one of my long-time mobile women friends and super smart marketer. I’ll let you read the entire list on your own, but want to leave with a couple of the quotes I especially liked: “In mobile, you need to keep an eye on the future and a foot grounded in the present” ALLISON MOONEY Vice president of emerging trends, Omnicom’s MobileBehavior “We need to connect with women in other industries who want to be where the action really is today in marketing” LYNN TORNABENE Chief marketing officer, Quattro Wireless “Currently 0.8 percent of email newsletters are optimized for mobile, yet 20 to 30 percent of folks are checking their email on mobile devices” DEBORAH HALL CEO, Web2Mobile See the Mobile Woman to Watch 2010 list at Mobile Marketer

Palm Pixi – reviewed by BrightHand

Palm’s Pixi has been reviewed by various news services in the past. Most of these have little to no Palm OS experience, and praised the device’s keyboard. The folks at BrightHand’s have a large Palm OS experience, and have ended up with the following – somewhat surprising – verdict: … After using it for a week I can say that it’s a very good value for the price, but it may not be right for everyone. The keyboard in particular is my least favorite aspect of the device. While it is adequate for basic texting and email, it isn’t really comfortable enough to use for long emails.

We must say, one device we were excited about this year was the Zune HD , and as evidenced in our Zune HD review , Microsoft came through with a superb device with a fantastic service behind it to match. Courts shifting positions on reading employee email

The Wall Street Journal carried an article last week on the US court’s shifting position on whether or not it’s okay for a company to read employee email. Most companies tend to take the position that whatever goes on within the corporate walls–or even within its virtual walls–is company property, and the actual keystrokes that take place on company property are fair game for snooping. However, that’s not always the case. First of all, let’s take a look at why a company would be snooping on employee email.
