Additional Reports Bolster Likelihood of Apple January 26th Media Event
A new report published by Fox News has bolstered rumors regarding Apple’s anticipated media event on January 26th at the Yerba Buena center in San Francisco, California. While the original report indicated that Apple had reserved the space to make “a major product announcement,” today’s report indicates that sources have first hand knowledge that the event will be associated with a product in the “mobility space.” For those anticipating the release of a tablet device at the event, Apple has reportedly told some of its iPhone developers to prepare their apps to run on a larger device, which is not a major undertaking given the flexible foundation supporting today’s iPhone apps. Reports that Apple is hosting its own January media event at the Yerba Buena, a location it has historically used for its fall iPod-related music events also help explain why the company announced last year that it would no longer be presenting a keynote or even hold a booth at IDG’s Macworld Expo event. The event date set in late January allows the company more time to plan and prepare for the slate introduction

DisplayLink Wholeheartedly Supports USB 3.0
Besides flash drives , RAID and even movie kiosks , video applications are moving fast to take advantage of ten-fold increase in bandwidth offered by USB 3.0 . The first to jump onto the SuperSpeed USB bandwagon is none other than DisplayLink whose latest DL-195 network video chipset is already struggling with HD output on a heavily congested USB 2.0. If DL-195 is designed to be scalable, then the upgrade might just be as easy as swapping in new USB 3.0 peripheral bridge.

Windows Mobile 7 and Custom UI like HTC Sense
windows mobile 7 There was a rumor floating around that custom UI like the one from HTC will not be present in the upcoming WM7. The rumor came from msmobiles.com but was quickly shot down by mobiletechworld.com who found an interesting bit of info from xda-developers. if HomeMachineStatus.WM7Device.Value then IsWindowsMobile7Device = true PredefineItem = 1 HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection(1) else IsWindowsMobile7Device = false PredefineItem = 0 HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection() end It looks like if the device is WM7 then HTC wants to show a specific UI which may be a completely new HTC UI. What do you guys think will HTC need to cover up the WM7 Home Screen or will Microsoft put out some great new UI to revive the Windows Phone brand.

Review of the Samsung Omnia II
OmniaII Are you a fan of the Samsung Omnia II, are you planning to get one soon then you might want to check out the review by mobilitysite.com . They have done a detailed software and hardware review. Their Verdict : ” The Samsung Omnia II is a strong, light-weight handset with a fabulous AMOLED display that did not deplete battery life as fast as expected and a powerful 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. Applications like Smart Reader, Smart Memo, Swype, and FM Radio work flawlessly and should be included on more smartphones! A few downsides to this device are the apparent lag to load widgets when switching from panel-to-panel, the absence of the ability to list new programs on the Main Menu while in TouchWiz mode, and the inability to switch to landscape mode in most programs. Plus, the abundance of static shortcuts and the lack of live-updating widgets was surprising.

8GB iPhone 3GS on the way?
It looks like Apple is getting ready to replace the aging 8GB iPhone 3G that currently sells for $99 with a newer iPhone 3GS model, if their packaging is to be believed. A user on the German apfetalk discussion forum posted the image above, which is the label on the iPhone 3G 8GB box, and while he did receive a regular iPhone 3G, the box clearly says “iPhone 3GS v2.2 8GB” and has us thinking that Apple is finally ready to have the entire product line fall under the 3GS brand.

Verizon’s Pixi likely to be delayed
Verizon has had its fair share of software issues in the past – and it looks like the Palm Pixi is the next victim. DigiTimes now claims the following: … Compal Communications in the fourth quarter of 2009 will total only 600,000 units instead of 800,000 units projected previously, … The orders for Pixi smartphones were reduced as part of the cellphone’s software has failed to pass tests conducted by Palm’s client, Verizon Wireless, said the paper, noting that shipments to Verizon will be delayed to the first quarter of 2010. Given DigiTimes once flawless track record, I am still somewhat inclined to believe them – but one never knows…

eBay’s Holiday Gift: 1.5M Sales Via Mobile
Mobile phone shopping is easier than driving to the store or even booting up a laptop to make a purchase because you can do it when you’re inspired to make a gift purchase. Maybe that’s why eBay performed remarkably well this holiday season . According to eBay, purchases ranged from the mundane to a $75,000 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, a $19,000 boat, and a $10,000 Steinway grand piano.

Xbox Live Games Coming to Windows Mobile
Gaming has been a big part of the success of the iPhone. There is a huge choice of games available, from some of the leading games manufacturers. This popularity of mobile gaming hasn’t been lost on Microsoft, who are in a prime position given their position in the gaming market with the Xbox console. The ideal option would be to combine the two and port Xbox games to the Windows mobile platform, and it seems Microsoft are looking to do just this.

Exchange Server 2010 Simplifies Mailbox Database Design
In a recent post I discussed the various factors that must be considered when planning an Exchange database design . For Exchange Server 2003 and 2007 the layout and naming of databases played an important role in the ease of administration as well as the balancing of database load. If Help Desk staff randomly chose a database to host a given mailbox it could easily lead to unbalanced servers and result in poor performance of the Exchange back end. Fortunately Exchange Server 2010 makes this a lot simpler thanks to several improvements and new features. Database Performance Improvements An immediate improvement in Exchange 2010 is the database performance, when viewed in the context of disk IOPS (Inputs/Outputs per Second) required to perform certain operations. Simply put, a given operation in Exchange 2010 (let’s say a user sorting their 10,000 item inbox by name instead of date) generates far less read/write load on the disks that store that mailbox database.
