Apple might make Microsoft’s Bing the default search engine for iPhone

Back in December, when Microsoft launched a free Bing app for Apple’s iPhone , most iPhone users probably didn’t care too much about it. One month after, we’re now hearing that Apple might be in talks with long-time rival Microsoft to make Bing the default search engine for iPhone , instead of Google’s search engine – which is currently the default one. The rumor comes from BusinessWeek , which quotes unnamed sources that are “familiar with the matter”. Reportedly, Apple could choose Microsoft’s Bing as the default iPhone search engine because Google recently became the company’s “primary enemy” (with the launch of Nexus One and the rising popularity of Android ), while Microsoft remains “a pawn in that battle.” Well, I can see what Apple is afraid of. For example, they certainly don’t want iPhone users to search something via Google and see ads for the Nexus One (Google has posted Nexus One ads on its homepage several times)

iPhone OS 4.0 to arrive 1/27 with new interface, multitasking?

Our pals over at Boy Genius Report are saying they’ve received some inside information about the iPhone OS 4.0, which is heavily rumored to debut, and possibly even be released, at the Apple event on January 27th . Here’s what they are saying about iPhone OS 4.0: There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone) “A few new ways” to run applications in the background—multitasking. Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc

Sacred Space Stones: 6 Religiously Revered Meteorites

[ By Steve in History & Trivia , Nature & Ecosystems , Science & Research . ] Meteorites: Falling from the sky with blinding light, thunderous noise and earth-shaking concussions, our ancestors naturally assigned them to the realm of the supernatural and ascribed to them great and God-like power. These 6 sacred stones from the stars illustrate the influence these astronomical visitors have had on humanity down through history. Some iPhone OS 4.0 features leaked; Apple’s tablet might be called iTablet, not iSlate

Apple’s new iPhone OS 4.0 will surely not be officially unveiled before January 27 – however, some of its features have already appeared on the Web. First of all, according to Boy Genius Report , OS 4.0 will probably be compatible only with iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS (and the upcoming iPhones , of course), so those who still have the first-generation iPhone will be forced to buy a new one if they want the latest software. Reportedly, iPhone OS 4.0 will bring “multi-touch gestures OS-wide”, lots of UI and graphical enhancements, and a new syncing feature (related to your contacts and calendar).

Versace luxury phones coming soon from ModeLabs

ModeLabs, the company behind handsets like the TAG Heuer Meridiist and the Christian Dior clamshell , announced that it has teamed-up with Italian fashion label Versace in order to launch a range of new luxury phones . The first Versace phone will be showcased in Paris this month, although it won’t be available until spring this year. There aren’t many technical details about the upcoming Versace mobile phone, but ModeLabs says it will be built out of exclusive materials and mix the “latest mobile phone technology” with the “glamour, elegance and originality” specific to the Versace brand. The price of ModeLabs’ Versace luxury phone was not announced – but I guess it can’t be higher than the price of the diamond-clad Nokia Supreme (about $160,000)

Net security hole could take year to fix

A fix for a flaw in an important Internet security protocol is ready for prime time but it will be many months before the patch is fully implemented, according to technical experts. The authentication vulnerability in TSL/SSL, which is the most common security code on the Net, could be exploited by hackers for all kinds of mischief. Built into browsers and Web servers to protect high-value information, the flaw impacts a wide scope of technologies including online banking, back-office systems using Web-based protocols, non-HTTP applications such as mail and database servers, mobile phones, wireless access points, DECT phones and home security systems. The vulnerability was discovered last September by researchers at PhoneFactor, a security service provider in Overland Park, Kansas, but was kept under wraps until November when another security expert, working independently, made the flaw public on a mailing list sponsored by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

Nokia wins patent dispute with IPCom in the UK

The UK High Court has recently ruled in favor of Nokia in a patent dispute with German company IPCom – which sued Nokia and HTC a few years ago over alleged patent infringements. IPCom still believes that Nokia is infringing some of its patents in the UK, so it will appeal the ruling. In December last year, IPCom won suits against both Nokia and HTC, as a German court declared that the two phone makers are using patent technologies held by IPCom. This led to IPCom’s request to ban Nokia and HTC phones in Germany
