Four Years Later Will I Finally Get My Ideal UMPC?

Oh, who am I kidding. I’m downright giddy about Apple’s announcement tomorrow. Yes, it’s possible that we’ll just see a new iPhone operating system or an upgrade to the Apple TV but with all of the buzz this time around that would be rather surprising

HTC Bravo shows its Android UI in new hands-on photo

The same day when images of Sprint’s HTC Supersonic popped up on the Web, a new photo of the HTC Bravo has appeared, too – a hands-on photo, to be precise. As previously reported, the HTC Bravo kind of resembles the Google Nexus One , although it has more hardware buttons and the trackball has been replaced with an optical trackpad. Apparently, the features of HTC Bravo include a 3.7 inch AMOLED WVGA multi-touch display, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, 512MB of RAM, 5MP camera with HD video recording , Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 1GHz processor, and Android 2.1. HTC Bravo should be available starting March, and T-Mobile UK might be among the first carriers to sell it. Komorkomania says that the new Bravo photo was sent by a reader alongside some info about the HTC Legend (nothing we didn’t know already, save for the fact that the Legend seems to have an aluminum case and a camera lens cover) – so both devices will probably be announced pretty soon.

Google Voice (Sort of) Arrives for the iPhone

In other news, Google has managed to bypass the App Store (and its approval process) and release its much-lauded Google Voice app to the iPhone and webOS devices via an HTML5-based web app. Per Engadget , the app should work with any HTML5-compliant device, although the formatting at this point has been tailored to Apple and Palm’s platforms. The app, which can be found at http://m.google.com/voice , caches your contacts list in a browser page and allows users to write SMS messages, check their your inbox, and, in future versions, listen to voicemails

HTC Bravo caught on camera (again), HTC Legend caught in words

Man, these HTC Bravos are floating around everywhere. A semi-decent shot of this oh-so-Nexus-One-esque Android handset leaked just yesterday , and today another (markedly better) shot has found its way to the interwebs. Not only that, but it brought a friend! According to the whisper train, HTC was showing off the Bravo at a gathering of some sort in Poland

Can you live without your mobile phone?

Being in my mid to late thirties, I can remember life before mobile phones . So it never fails to amuse me when I hear from people, who are of a similar age to me, who have to be parted from their phones for a few days. It amuses me, not because I enjoy seeing people upset, but it invokes in me the thought of how we used to cope before mobile came into being

David Blaine: How I held my breath for 17 minutes

Regardless of how annoying he might be, David Blaine’s TEDMED talk on how he set the world record for holding his breath underwater for 17 minutes is pretty phenomenal. Definitely interesting to see the different ways he thought of to do it as an illusion, using various technological methods and DIY gadgets, before finally deciding that he would do it for real. This one is definitely worth watching, and also worth not trying at home. It’s kind of ridiculous.

Sprint’s HTC Supersonic WiMAX Android phone in clear photos

Remember the HTC A9292 , rumored to hit Sprint as one of its first WiMAX phones? The A9292 might be the HTC Supersonic, recently appeared in two images – a live photo and a rendering. Reportedly, the HTC Supersonic is an Android 2.1 smartphone that has features similar to the ones of the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2: 4.3 inch WVGA touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 1GB of internal memory (like T-Mobile’s HD2 ), and a 5MP autofocus camera. A notable difference (besides the different OS) is that the Supersonic has an OLED display, instead of a TFT one. Here’s what the HTC Supersonic looks like: It’s said that Sprint will launch the HTC Supersonic in March this year

Most useless Lego machine

Inspired by the most useless machine , Karel decided to make a clone using Lego and some switches. Also, this hadn’t occurred to me until now, but this kind of machine could actually be used as a time delay, in the same manner as a monostable multivibrator . Maybe it could be used to debounce a giant switch? Read more | Permalink | Comments | Digg this!

Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results

This dude is Hans Christian Ørsted, whose 1820 discovery that electric current produced magnetic fields was, supposedly, entirely accidental: He was preparing a voltaic pile for a lecture demonstration and there happened to be a compass lying nearby. He has become a sort of mascot for the Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results (JSUR) , a new open-access journal initiative that hopes to provide a forum for life and computer scientists to publish results they lucked into and maybe can’t fully explain. From their website: Can you demonstrate that: * Technique X fails on problem Y. * Hypothesis X can’t be proven using method Y. * Protocol X performs poorly for task Y.

UWB Now Becomes a Gigabit Specs, Benefits only WUSB

UWB’s fate is pretty much tied to that of Certified Wireless USB , which is only communication protocol that still depends on the said radio technology. While there are already several WUSB devices, from video / audio adapters to hard drives and docking stations , on the market, the adoption rate is a far cry from that of other USB standards. The performance of these wireless peripherals is quite discouraging with real-world transfer rate averaging at just around 15MB/s. Native WUSB hosts can remove some overhead, and likely provide some speed boost, but significant improvement will only come with new specs, just like USB 3.0 . WiMedia Alliance , believed to be in the process of disbanding, has released version 1.5 of the common radio platform specs, which in a nutshell defines the foundation for Wireless USB.

Here’s one for my fellow tea enthusiasts. It’s the TeaSub submarine shaped tea infuser. It’s made of dishwasher safe silicone and looks cute as a button. I can’t find it for sale on any sites though. If you find one, let me know and I’ll update this post

Google Voice web app launched for iPhone, WebOS (video)

Google wanted to launch a Google Voice app for iPhone since last year , but Apple didn’t approve the application. Well, Goolge has found a way around the problem and today announced that Google Voice is available for iPhone (OS 3.0 or higher) and Palm WebOS, as a web-based (HTML5) application.

Frequent Flyers Rejoice: TripTracker Automagically Brings Your Travel Details to Your iPhone

Pageonce has quietly built a solid business by aggregating its user’s various online accounts into one place. They’ve got over 1.3 million registered users and recently raised a $6.5 million Series B round . And though Pageonce hardly gets neither the fame nor the fortune of its competitor (Mint) , it is still a very solid way to manage your online accounts. Unlike Mint, which focuses on personal finances, Pageonce’s goal is to provide you with a one-stop view of all of your online accounts, including financial, travel, e-mail and social networking. Though a single web interface for all of those accounts may be unnecessary, it is a perfect service for mobile devices.

Google Voice web app updated for Pre and iPhone

Today, Google is rolling out a new version of their Google Voice web app, leveraging HTML5, which enables Palm Pre and Apple iPhone users to have a more rich user experience. We know, we know, it isn’t a native app… but the interface looks pretty darn good. “Zune phone” references coming straight from Microsoft

Although we still don’t know what the Microsoft Zune phone looks like (or when exactly it will be finally announced), it seems that the device has been (sort of) confirmed by Microsoft itself. A new Zune software update (v. 4.2.202.0) was recently released by Microsoft, alongside a Zune.inf file that’s “responsible for associating devices with the Zune driver.” According to I started something , said .inf file contains references to what look to be Zune phones – and there are actually three different hardware IDs listed (apart from hardware IDs for the latest-generation Zune media players). So Microsoft might launch not one, but three Zune phones, most likely based on Windows Mobile 7

Is Microsoft Soon To Release A Zune “Phone”?

The Microsoft Zune is undergoing scheduled maintenance that started early this morning at 1:00 a.m. EST.  This isn’t terribly big news unless you are a Zune user.  3 phone profiles being found in the Zune.inf file of the maintenance release, is, however, kind of big…  Especially since Microsoft has repeatedly stated that they had no plans to add mobile phone to the Zune since before the original Zune came out

Taxidermied mouse flash drive

Its eyes blink with data transfer . Spotted first on my Sunday scroll through the CRAFT Flickr pool . Image/video after the jump to protect delicate sensibilities. As Mark Frauenfelder, Editor-in-chief of MAKE, wrote in 2006 about a similar project: Taxidermy is an ancient craft but contemporary concerns about using animals to make things are worthy of discussion

Will Apple’s Tablet Change The Future of Mobile Marketing?

Apple’s event in San Francisco tomorrow could ultimately prove to be more than just a routine product launch or the exciting update of a familiar mobile device. Tomorrow’s event at the Yerba Buena center could be a game changer for the mobile marketing industry. Is that an exaggeration?
