Kindle App For BlackBerry Coming Soon…

The Amazon Kindle and eBook readers in general where a big hit this holiday season.  eBooks actually outsold real books for the first time and I believe this will be a trend that continues.  As convenient, however,  as reading a book on a device like the Kindle is in comparison to physical books, there are times when you simply won’t have your Kindle with you.  This is one of the reasons that I think, like the Kindle for iPhone app, Kindle for BlackBerry will be a big hit. Kindle for BlackBerry features include: Get the best reading experience available on your BlackBerry. No Kindle required Access your Kindle books even if you don’t have your Kindle with you Automatically synchronizes your last page read and annotations between devices with Whispersync Create bookmarks and view the annotations you created on your Kindle, computer, or other Kindle-compatible mobile device Kindle for BlackBerry will also allow you to shop the Kindle Store: Search and browse more than 390,000 books, including 101 of 112 New York Times ® Best Sellers

Lego domino row-bot makes setup a snap

Matthias’ Lego domino row building machine takes the tedium out of laying out lengthy domino runs – and looks pretty smooth doing it. A motor from an old tape deck keeps the little guy moving forward and equally spacing each handmade wooden piece – The key idea that makes the machine work is that the magazine is just a row of dominoes dragged along the table. This avoids the problem of having to somehow lower the dominoes onto the table. My first unsuccessful attempts back in 1985 involved dropping the dominoes out of the magazine onto the table. But the impact of dropping the dominoes would often cause them to tip over, with ruinous consequences

Spotify and Google teaming up to challenge iTunes Music Store?

If you are not familiar with Spotify — an online subscription based music service with millions of songs in its catalog that offers offline synchronization with the desktop and some mobile devices — there is a high likelihood you are living Stateside. Even though it still not available in the U.S. — really, thanks RIAA — TechCrunch is reporting that Google and Spotify are working together on some sort of partnership that would perhaps build Spotify support right into Android 2.1, and potentially the Nexus One. Details are scarce about whether this partnership would result in a free, ad supported online music catalog for consumers (doubtful) or a subscription based service to compete with Apple iTunes Music Store.

The Mobile Kings Will Lose Their Reign In 2010

The following is a guest column from Mark Jaffe, blogger for Mobile Mandala … I was reminded of an Italian proverb after my son beat me in yet another game of chess this past winter break “Once the game is over, the King and the pawn go in the same box”. It is a humbling thought for anyone or any entity with power. Power truly coexists with all the other forces of the political and economic world, despite the illusion of invincibility.

Our friends at Elecite have just introduced a hot new theme called Plasma. One of the neatest features about this theme is the star-shaped message notifier in the middle of the screen, when you receive a message it turns red, so you can’t miss it. Live picture of the Motorola Calgary (Droid Devour) surfaces

To be honest, we had already given up on the Motorola Calgary considering that 2009 came and gone without us even catching a glimpse of it live in the flesh. This new year, however, is a different story as BGR has managed to get an exclusive sneak peek at it, and judging from the way it looks is primed and ready to hit the scene this 2010. The Calgary was initially rumored to be the first Android handset from Motorola . Unfortunately, it never came to be.

Filipina Bianca King Endorses the HTC Hero

First released last July in Europe, the HTC Hero is the maker’s third phone built for the Android platform. The slightly slanted touch-screen phone packs quite a punch with a tremendously comprehensive feature set—which includes HSPA-capability. Geeks most likely know it as the predecessor to the long-awaited HTC Passion, rumored to be AKA Google’s Nexus One . So yes, you know about the HTC Magic

Nokia 5235 Comes with Music Review

In the grand scheme of things, the Nokia Comes With Music service can hardly be called a success. It’s a year or so since the service launched, and with little more than 100,000 subscribers worldwide, it has to be seen as a disappointment. At first glance, it would seem that the CWM service is something that any music lover would go for, with unlimited music downloads for 12 months, and at the end of that period, whilst you cannot download anymore tracks, anything you have already grabbed is yours to keep, forever

Mobile FireFox Fennec RC1 now Available for Nokia N900

After more than a year of confirming that a mobile version of FireFox is forthcoming, Mozilla’s starting off 2010 on a good note by announcing that FireFox Mobile (codenamed as Fennec ) is now finally out of alpha and beta stage and is ready for download. Unfortunately, it’s only compatible with the Maemo-powered Nokia N900 phone and it’s still just an RC1 version, but hey, at least it’s now one step closer to reaching its final release version.

WebOS to get 3D gaming and native application support in 2010?

WebOS 1.3.5 was released to the masses last week and its inner workings were promptly picked apart by eager webOS hackers. One of the most exciting finds was the inclusion of the SDL library in this latest version of webOS. SDL is an acronym for Simple DirectMedia Layer, an open source library that provides a programming interface to a platform’s underlying audio, graphics and input devices

Is the Apple Tablet a King Size iPhone ?

Let’s face it. The apple tablet PC has been one of the biggest rumours of 2009. It’s size is said to be anything from 7 inches to 12 inches, & rumoured names being anything from iSlate to iGuide. Since the last two months or so, the media was persistent with the news that it would probably be releasing in January 2010 Now Apple has confirmed that they will be holding a Press Conference on January 26th & the masses are certain that is when the Apple tablet will be released. The details surrounding the event are very closely guarded, as always.

More Oddball Organisms: New Year Means New Weird

[ Filed under Nature & Ecosystems or in the Animals & Habitats category ] (Images via: SCC Science , Sabbah , Adventure Doc , Biology Blog , Frequenseanz ) At WebEcoist, we take great pride in educating you on the abnormal side of nature, biology and other aspects of the environment, with the New Year proving no different in the case of lungless and bone-eating worms, imprisoned and ancient bacteria, and slightly off-kilter octopuses. All of these living organisms have recently raised eyebrows for attributes or behavior that are certainly strange on the surface but really interesting when understanding the reasoning behind the apparent weirdness or madness. Breathe In, Breathe Out You Giant, Lungless Worm (Images via: Free Republic , World of Jah ) Recently in Guyana, researchers discovered a strange-looking worm to say the least (as seen in the above pictures) that is believed to be only the second known lungless caecilian (an order of amphibians resembling worms or snakes). Sans nostrils, lungs or legs, the giant, lungless worm is known as Caecilita iwokramae and absorbs oxygen through its skin.

Sony Ericsson Hazel Review

The Sony Ericsson Hazel is the second of the recently announced new Greenheart devices, and is scheduled to be the second released, as the Hazel is not due to be released until Q2 2010. The green eco credentials of the Hazel are in line with other previously released Greenheart devices; this includes a low powered charger, minimum packaging and the user manual for the phone is stored on the device as a .pdf file. The handset itself is produced largely from recycled material, plus the phone is free from hazardous chemicals, and uses waterborne paint, which has less volatile organic compound than is found in traditional solvent based paints. The design of the Hazel is smooth with a curved effect, which gives the result of the phone curving round from earpiece to microphone to fit the contours of your face when the phone is opened. Measuring in at 102 x 49 x 16mm, the Hazel weighs 120g, which is the upper range of an acceptable weight for a modern mobile device

Chrome takes the spot of third most popular browser

Section: Web , Web Browsers , Google Passing up Safari, Google’s Chrome internet browser has been named third most popular internet browser with a 4.63% share compared to Safari’s 4.46% according to California-based measurement firm Net Applications. Some handsets suffer Y2K16 SMS bug

Ah, yes, Y2K…remember the good old days?  ATM’s weren’t going to recognize your bank card, servers were going to spontaneously combust, and elevators would have no idea where the second floor was. For those of you who look back with nostalgia at the Y2K hysteria, there is a new, albeit much smaller, Y2 “something” glitch to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside again. WMExperts is reporting that some mobile users are seeing text messages sent after 1/1/2010 dated as 1/1/2016.  The most widely affected group seems to be those on Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 although some non-Windows Mobile users are also reporting this behavior. WMExperts has a home grown .cab file posted with a fix, however we haven’t seen anything official from Microsoft or other major manufacturers. How about it?
