Mattel’s Puppy Tweets Is A Sure Sign It’s Time To Bail On Twitter
By Andrew Liszewski I’m not saying that man’s best friend was the reason MySpace became ‘uncool’, but now that dogs will be able to tweet their comings and goings with a little help from Mattel, I think it might be time to say goodbye to Twitter and move on to the next social media fad. Puppy Tweets, which is officially being announced at next month’s Toy Fair in New York, is a small sound and motion sensor equipped device that is worn on a dog’s collar and translates their barks or activities into Twitter posts. It communicates with a receiver that connects to your PC as I understand it, and only posts ‘pre-recorded’ tweets based on what the dog is doing. So if they’re being particularly active a tweet saying “I finally caught that tail I’ve been chasing and…OOUUUCHH!” might get posted.
This dry-wipe ceramic Postcard Memo Pad is both fun and Earth friendly. Plus, your friends will appreciate any post card from Boozeville that invites you to partake in a drink or two. By the way, in this case “XXX” doesn’t mean “hugs.” It’s just a subtle hint that the reader should get some moonshine too…or porn. Product Page ($16, pre-order for March 4 availability)
augmented hyper(reality): pop-up ads take over your walls
When I first watched Keiichi Matsuda’s Augmented (hyper)Reality video, I wasn’t sure if I should be awed or frightened by his vision of the world that lies in front of us. Matsuda’s stunning video clip was created as part of his Masters’ program at the Bartlett School of Architecture , and envisions a future in which augmented reality has embedded itself into our everyday lives, transforming the way we interact with our living and working spaces. A wondrous world of heads-up displays show contextual information for everything from dishwasher status, to tea kettle temperature updates, to an inventory of the items in your fridge. Oh yeah, and lots and lots of ads. Click to View Embedded Video Clip I, for one do not want my kitchen walls covered with banner ads – even if they are targeted to my midnight cravings for Krispy Kremes and Grape Tang (unless Kozmo was still in business and could deliver those items in 30 minutes or less.) Ah, the future’s so bright, you’ve gotta hope the AdBlock Plus guys are working on an augmented reality version of their app

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few months, you no doubt know that tomorrow will be a potentially very exciting day for everyone that has been dreaming of an Apple tablet. Our buddy Steve Jobs will be unveiling something new at 10 AM PST at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California. The invites went out last week for the invitation only event, offering only a vague teaser that asked reporters to “Come see our latest creation.” Even with the never ending juggernaut of hype that we’ve all had to put up with, Dave Rees and I have been praying to the gadget gods that tomorrow will FINALLY reveal the iTablet, iSlate, iPad, iWhateverTheHeckItWillBeCalled. We plan to do a dual review as soon as we can each get our hands on one.
MAKE subscriber Jeff writes in to share his latest project, a Propeller powered Arcade Machine . Rather than building a PC-powered MAME cabinet, he decided to base his around a Propeller microcontroller. While it is kind of funny to put such a tiny device in a large cabinet, writing some fun games for the system should be a fun challenge
Although this mug has got its barcode all around, for some reason it’s called the BEEP Mug. It was created by the British designer Colin O’Dowd and the mug does more than just look cool, it eliminates the need for any excessive packaging, since its own UPC barcode is integrated into the design of the mug. It’s a great idea, though it defeats the purpose if you’re shipping one of these mugs. If you’re just picking one up in a store, I guess it makes more sense.

McGraw-Hill accidentally (on purpose?) leaks Apple Tablet on CNBC
It wasn’t what McGraw-Hill CEO, Terry McGraw, said; rather it is that he said it at all. When asked by CNBC’s Erin Burnett about the Apple Tablet, McGraw had this to say: “They’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one… And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format…The tablet is going to be just really terrific.” This is either a planned PR stunt by McGraw-Hill/Apple or an enormous flub by MG’s CEO.
Confirmed: Apple Tablet runs iPhone OS says McGraw-Hill CEO
Okay, we all know by now that Apple is going to be announcing their tablet at tomorrow’s January 27th Apple event , but the CEO of McGraw-Hill, Terry McGraw, just kinda spilled the beans on CNBC: “Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable
Apparently I’m not the only one charmed by the simple elegance of the Geneva wheel movement ( Wikipedia ). Thingiverse users PrintTo3D and raumfahrtagentur have created printable and laser-cut-able versions, respectively, of the classic mechanism, which converts continuous rotary into intermittent rotary motion, with positive locking of the stationary shaft between cycles. PrintTo3D has also posted a YouTube video showing the final printing, assembly, and action of his model. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in 3D printing | Digg this!
